A Nightmare on Elm Street Infinifilm

I had forgotten how much i enjoyed A Nightmare on Elm Street until i picked up the new remastered Infinifilm version. Not only as good as the film has ever looked, but also a ton of extras!

The movie itself contains less comedy than even i remember, and i like that, Freddy's roots and all. i still think the "tina in a Bodybag" scenes and the blood shooting up out of the bed hood up really well.

My favourite extra on the disc, and why i recommend it for huge fans of the film, is a look at the making of the movie from beginning to end, with actor and staff interviews. It tells everything you could ever want to know and more, in a manageable length.

Now obviously I'm a big fan of the series, but has anyone else picked this up? What's your take on the content and watching the film that started it all again?

The_Return 10-28-2006 12:41 PM

I very, very rarely bother to watch special features, so I took advantage of this release in a different way. Because of this fancy new SE, the original DVD got a crazy price cut...finally got around to grabbing that, plus the first 2 sequels.

Geddy 10-28-2006 12:54 PM

Who's all on the commentary?

Fred Krueger 10-28-2006 01:11 PM

director Wes Craven, producer Robert Shaye, co-producers Sara Risher and John Burrows, cinematographer Jacques Haitkin, composer Charles Bernstein, editors Rick Shaine and Patrick McMahon, effects producers Jim Doyle and David B. Miller, film historian David Del Valle, and actors Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronnee Blakely

"The House That Freddy Built" - The Legacy of New Line Horror is also a great feature. They go through the movies they've made, how they came across franchises etc..., and the role Nightmare on elm Street played in it all.

Tad 10-28-2006 01:11 PM

I passed on the infinifilm because I already have the NOES boxed set. And I can't justify spending another $25 Can on the same movie I already have just for a few special features. But god knows I've been tempted.

slayer666 10-29-2006 04:56 AM

I plan to pick this one up eventually. I didn't care for any of the sequels, so the box set would be pointless.

Geddy 10-29-2006 02:14 PM

I wish that Johnny Depp was on the commentary.

joshaube 10-29-2006 02:31 PM

Mhm, the DVDs did get a ridiculous price cut. You can grab them all in the Discount Bin at Walmart now. 6.88$ a piece.

I don't often watch special features on DVDs either. To me, all a DVD really needs is... a quality transfer, a wide selection of audio and subtitle streams, and a commentary. Needless to say, "deleted scenes" shouldn't be there, they should be re-added into the film where they were cut. I want to see the film as it was meant to be, not edited down for those with no attention span.

Slap all that together, and for any movie, it's worth owning.

Re. your delete scenes comment:

Alot of times, scenes are cut for good reason. Having them back in the film wouldnt always make it better.

Take League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. SDont know what you think of it, but I love it. Anyway...a few (most) of the deleted scenes there really deserved to be cut, would have detracted from the movie.

Ginger<3 10-29-2006 03:33 PM

i loved the special features .... i pouted when fred turned them off to go to work that day. it's a great DVD.

JP500 10-29-2006 05:30 PM

I picked it up about a week ago.It was well worth it.

Franchise Discussion: A Nightmare on Elm Street

As of about 20 minutes ago, Ive finally got through the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. Now, how about some nice friendly discussion?;)

The thing that makes me think that I prefer this franchise over Friday the 13th is sheer originality. Though alot of the Friday films were themselves stronger, they fell into a formula after awhile, where even though some of the films were undeniably pretty bad, Nightmare always at least had a new idea behind it. Friday the 13th has consistency, but Nightmare gets bonus points for not just re-hashing the same formula.

So what are everyone's favourite films in this infamous series? What were your favourite kills? What do you think about Freddy - better as a dark, menacing killer or a wacky dark comic?

Personally, here's how I would rank the series from best to weakest:

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Wes Craven's New Nightmare
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

Freddy Vs. Jason

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge

A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master
A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child

Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare

Until the first break, all 3 are awesome horror movies, some of the best of their kind. Freddy Vs. Jason isnt great, but its alot of fun; definatly more Nightmare than Friday. Part 2 was ok, but fairly forgettable...4 and 5 werent flat out horrible, but far from good...and Freddy's Dead just sucked. No continuity, crappy humor, horrible ending. Had some decent ideas behind it, but sure didnt turn out well.

Thoughts?

AUSTIN316426808 02-01-2007 06:56 PM

I agree with the ranking.

My favorite of the series is either the original or New Nightmare which are also the best in the series.

I prefer the darker Freddy because the jokes are there just in moderation. The original and New Nightmare are the best films which also happen to be the films he's darkest in. I enjoy the comedy but when it's heavy throughout the film it gets old fast. Freddy aside, I just enjoy dark films more than others.

Overall I think it's a good series with a couple of great movies, one or two subpar and a handful of decent, enjoyable films.

Geddy 02-02-2007 12:06 AM

1.A Nightmare On Elm Street.
2.Wes Craven's New Nightmare.
3.A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 Dream Warriors.
4.A Nightmare On Elm Street 4 The Dream Master.
5.A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 Freddy's Revenge.
6.Freddy Vs Jason.
7.Freddy's Dead The Final Nightmare.
8.A Nightmare On Elm Street 5 The Dream Child.

A Nightmare On Elm Street's my favourite horror series.
Do you think they'll make a Freddy Vs Jason 2?

pinkerton 02-02-2007 12:11 AM

I enjoy pt 2 alot but the "rules" seem to get bent.Very bent.

He's not the only comon element in them: Heather Langenkamp. The ultimate slasher heroine, IMO. All the rest had boring, throw-away heros / heroines, but Nancy is awesome.

paws the great 02-02-2007 04:11 PM

A Nightmare on Elm Street- A classic horror film.

Freddy Vs. Jason- A fun and slick slasher.

New Nightmare
Dream Warriors
Freddy's Revenge
Freddy's Dead
The Dream master
The Dream Child

I love the first Nightmare on Elm Street, but I'm not a huge fan of the rest.

garthmanorgirl 02-02-2007 08:07 PM

I agree with most of your order, but I'd switch a couple:
I prefer Dream Warriors over New Nightmare.

I also am not a big fan of Part 2. I'd put it next to last behind Final Nightmare. The rule bending was just a bit too annoying for me :D

I would also put Freddy vs. Jason right up there. I enjoyed the whole "Christmas sweater, phallic symbol" conversation between Freddy and Kelly Rowland's character.

Spec7ral 02-02-2007 09:33 PM

i have the series but havent seen all of them yet, i dip into it about once a month so it's not really much of a controlled experiment for me.

However, on the subject of dream movies, I can tell you that Freddy will never top the line "Maybe she's the one who bought the damn gasoline and helped pour it on the babies!" from Bad Dreams. Definetly one of my top 5 b-movie lines of all time, maybe even number one.

alicefan 02-03-2007 03:19 PM

i like Freddy's humor and his killing is cool, but the ranking prob. wouldn't be the same as mine, the original is prob. the best, but I thought Freddy's Dead should be higher than last in a ranking of the series, part 2 i think is the worst out of the series

BASSI 02-04-2007 04:37 AM

Freddy is not scary when he funny,
but he did scare me in New nightmare (he wasn't funny in this one or 1st one)
3rd one and Freddy vs Jason were really fun to watch

my list would be

1.A Nightmare On Elm Street.
2.Wes Craven's New Nightmare.
3Freddy Vs Jason.
4 A Nightmare On Elm Street 3 .
5.A Nightmare On Elm Street 2
6.A Nightmare On Elm Street 4
7 A Nightmare On Elm Street 5
8 Freddy's Dead The Final Nightmare.

Yes, I agree.

Freddy's a BAD joke in part 4,5 and "Freddy's Dead":)

alicefan 02-05-2007 03:59 PM

the funny side of Freddy is still cool, especially when he makes some of those jokes, but I agree that he wasn't very funny in part 3, but in part 1 he was sort of comical

Manic1511 02-05-2007 10:06 PM

Nightmare on Elm street 1 & 2

is it me or the guy "rod" or "nick" in part one look similar to the guy "ron" on part two? i know its two different actors but they look mighty similar...

The Holy Ghost 06-14-2007 06:35 PM

Obviously the original is amazing and everyone knows that but my favorite sequel is definetly part 3. I love it, such a great part in the series. The puppet scene is crazy, and scared the shit outta me as a kid. The Freddy Snake was nicely done. Plus Nancy was in this one, so it had to be good :D

There's some great kills in every movie, i like the cockroach kill in part 4 and even though Freddys Dead sucked, i like the deaf guy kill, lol.

Freddy > Jason

the_real_linda 06-15-2007 02:23 AM

i heard there making freddy vs jason 2............dunno tho

1. NOES 3-dream warriors
2. NOES
3. Wes Cravens new nightmare
4. Freddys dead-Final nightmare
6. Freddy vs Jason
7. NOES 2- freddys revenge
8. NOES 4- Dream Master
9. NOES 5 Dream Child

What was the one with the nurse with the nice tits. She spits out tongues that tie the kid to the bed. I think it was # 4?

These are such lame threads.

It was that "Dream Warriors" one, I believe. What a shitty movie.

I think you could find sexual themes in most horror flicks. It seems to be a very sexual genre in ways.

EDIT: I think you (the thread starter) may mean more like sexual imagery, rather than themes per se. I know the Alien movies are full of sexual imagery, especially the first. As for sexual themes in horror, David Cronenberg's films of the late 70's and 80's come straight to mind.

Phalanx 02-19-2008 06:57 PM

"Penis like"?
I would think more snake like...what with swallowing prey in a similar method to a snake?
But hey, if you see this as a phallic representation, perhaps you're looking just a bit too hard - might wanna look into that.

As for the tongue thing, so?
He did a tongue thing in the first one (down the phoneline) too, Freddy is a sick perv trying to weird out his victims - did he go to rape them? no.
He's a sick and demented killer who enjoys toying with his victims, largely around, but not exclusive to, their personal fears.

I think in terms of sexual content, considering the time of the majority of the series and the number of installments, they're actually comparatively mild in terms of the genre/time.
