Maybe it's my old age but I laugh like hell when someone gets their panties in a twist arguing on a internet forum. Ever notice newb, hammerfan, urge, myself and others born in the 50's or earlier never get caught up in this stuff? Maybe we're so old we can't stay awake long enough to join in the fun

I've been here 2 years, lurked for 6 months before joining. I have to admit I haven't been as active since the new rules started last year. When I was lurking I used to laugh like hell at ShankS, Kpro, and others who would post a funny picture and a funny fuck you or stfu to the n00bs. Thats one of the reasons I joined, you could have some good natured ribbing and some of the humor here was halarious. When I would flame a n00b I usually ended it with a smiley or a wink so the n00b knew it was all in fun. Most of them got it and joined in and the ones who didn't I'd PM them explaining its all in fun. But most of the fun has been taken out of this place......

The problem I have noticed in the last few years is that it seems to be the same handful of folks who always seem to be in the middle of this. I really like everyone here, haven't had a problem with anyone really so hopefully no one takes this personally.

I really enjoy cheeba's posts and insights but he is without a doubt the most sensitive person I have ever seen on a forum. He gets so fired up and pissed off so quickly its almost comical. That being said, we all know that and there seems to be the same group of people who insist on rattling his chain because they know they can.

The funny thing about it is every time there is a major flame war everyone complains but one thing is also for sure, we ALL want to read it and see whats coming next. I can't count how many times I've read someone say "Damn, I wish I could of read that but the threads been locked". So all this sniveling is funny to me because nothing is really going to change. Maybe we need a seperate forum where one can challenge someone they have a problem with to a smack off and those who don't want to read it don't have to go there......but you all know you're gonna take a peek. Or just use the PM and keep it out of the forum all together.

And don't worry BR, you're doing a hell of a job moderating us bunch of A-Holes. Keep up the good work Hotstuff!!!!! :p ;) :D
Well that's my $20.00 worth.....I'm older than most of you kids who only have 2 cents, my bank account is a little further along :D

Well time for this old guy to have a beer and fall asleep on the couch watching the Yankees kick the WhiteSox ass.....
Here's one for the n00bs reading this for old time sakes......hopefully Hotstuff won't ban me!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Although I'm a filthy n00b, Rayne did ask for everyone to chip in, so here I am.

As an outsider (of sorts, but I'm trying) it's hard to tell, but it seems like there has been some history between Cheeba and Deposable, so it all lies in the context.

It's a little different but: if a guy at work has already had warnings for being a perv, and then he gets sacked for slapping a female co-worker's ass, he can't complain too much when a first-time offender does the same... if you see what I mean.

Okay, bad analogy.

All I mean is, if shit's gone down before, and people have been called up on it, then they have no right to bitch if they get caught out again - regardless of the level of the offence.

That sounds really rational right there.

monalisa 08-09-2006 05:15 PM

There has been a lot of good ideas here and I agree, it's a tough call. One thing I would like to suggest, and I have seen it happen, is if someone is about to get banned, give them a warning. They may really not know what they did or said was over the line. And if it's a group of people having some fun and a mod having a bad day or taking what is being said in the wrong way, then we can explain and/or defend our actions.

Common sense goes along way too. But we all make mistakes. And we all have different senses of humor, I know mine is rather twisted, sarcastic and lewd, but I'm basically a very harmless person and rarely mean anything mean in the things I say and do. I usually try to remember to put a j/k or a smiley, but not always. And people take me the wrong way sometimes. I don't want to get banned for it or walk on eggshells while I'm posting here to make sure I don't offend anyone. I'm not easlily offended, so yah, maybe people just need to lighten up too.

Just my 2 cents (and yes Zero, you can have mine too). :p

stubbornforgey 08-09-2006 05:15 PM

An agreement between the mods n admin needs to be agreed upon as to what really
is warranted as a bannable offence ...
especially when it comes to abusing other members.
See ..the thing is...when active members/who have become freinds ..get the shits with eachother and start cussing each other out...will they get banned too ??considering that once they have aired thier differences..they are back to being typical forum buddies again.
There needs to be a specific ruling on this.
What i find amusing ..is that ..the real culprits are able to come back in under different nicks..in order for that to stop..they need thier i.ps banned too ...not just the name.
But..at the end of the day..it is entirely up to the ppl with the power to push that one command button.

Despare 08-09-2006 05:28 PM

If I honestly felt insulted... well I'm a bad example because on the internet I don't think I would be. Ok, so if member A really feels insulted or attacked then they should tell a mod and the mod can look at what was said and if it is indeed offensive then the mod can warn the insulting party once. Anymore insults on member A by the insulting member would be immediate ban... plus we'll know who the little baby tattle tails are. ;)

Of course that wouldn't work, but is there really one policy that would? I don't think so. Too much board politics, let's just watch some people get sliced up, diced up, and eviscerated.

Babe...We do not have "that one command button"...Only the administrator (Horror, himself) has the option to IP ban someone...And, he is never here at the forum...

It might be a little easier...If it were possible

If you're gonna start banning IP's, then you definately need to send a warning first. Couples that use the same computer (meaning the same IP) should not get banned as a whole if one of them fucks up. Or if someone is having a shitty day and posts stuff they could have said a bit more gently, basically I'm saying work with people and they're usually willing to work with you. If not, ban their damn asses.

heebiejeebies 08-09-2006 07:04 PM

It's been my experience that most mods are "damned if they do and damned if they don't." Any decision made is open to interpretation and usually results in at least one member complaining that said mod is "playing favorites" or being "biased." That being said, I think the mods on this forum do a commendable job.

I'm still a newbie and haven't experienced any of the "hate" that some in this thread are talking about, but I do have a short fuse and a vicious temper (at times) and know what it's like to get baited into an argument. I was banned from a (you'll love this one:)) religious forum because I was very unChristian-like to another member. Now IMO the other person deserved it, and I didn't say anything that was all that bad. I wasn't given any warnings and, because it was an IP ban, can't get back on the site two years later. But you know what, I DON'T CARE!!!! I said what I had to say, got it off my chest, and moved on. And, truth be told, I don't want to be a part of a forum that's like that.

The important thing to remember is that you don't need an ignore button in order to ignore posts. There are certain members' posts that I skim over because I usually don't have any use for what they post. That takes care of the problem (not that there really is one) for me. And if someone does the same to me...more power to 'em.

I have, however, been wondering about a couple of things.

1) If Phalanx (I'm assuming he used to be Cheeba) came back with new name and profile, how did anyone know it was him? Why not simply ignore the hateful posts? It's been my experience that if nothing rises to the bait, the fishermen go away.

2) Can a mod simply delete a thread? On another forum I belong to the mods are "strict" (that's a nice way of saying it), and I can always tell when a thread is going to be deleted because the posts become personal attacks with lots of profanity, namecalling, etc. I must admit that when I read the "Cheeba, Cheeba" thread, I kept waiting for it to be deleted because there were some pretty "unkind" things being written. Of course I was applying the other forum's rules.

Just to be safe I think everyone should remember the golden rule, and I didn't learn it from the religious website that kicked me off. Opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one and no one thinks theirs stinks. :D

Thanks for contributing

We try not to delete too many things here...We really are NOT very strict...The more we 'remove', the more censorship is exersized...Horror (our administrator) is HUGE on 'freedom of speech' and a firm supporter of second chances (and third...and fourth...to infinity), which is why we cannot IP ban...

No one needs to hide who they are when they get banned and rejoin...Everyone gets a 'fresh start' at that point...And a brand new chance to fuck up again :)

Roderick Usher 08-09-2006 07:13 PM

Asked to wiegh in, so...

Just joined, not really up on the history of this issue, but I feel the entire argument is a moot point.

It would seem that some people are going to follow the rules and some aren't. We're dealing with a human nature issue here.

I'm quite pleasantly surprised at the consistant level of intelligence and forethought of most of the posts on this forum. I'll try like hell to live up to it. I've not yet read anything that has come close to offending me. The random "attack" comes as part and parcel with an open forum.

And of course, every so often someone's going act the fool - I'm sure I will- but, like it or not, it's going to happen. A "ban" does nothing but provoke the banned individual to return with greater vitriol. So you can ban and feed the fire, or you can be patient and not sweat the small stuff.

Just my opinion, but what do I know? I'm an asshole.

Well that's good. Hopefully people will use it as an opportunilty to come back if they really want to and an innocent partner won't be banned even if their partner gets banned.

Basically, it's all good if we all use common sense and if something is borderline, send the person a message either on the forum or PM. and if they just say FuckYou, then ban them. Life is all about giving second chances. But the person given the 2nd chance has to honor that too. And some of us might make mistakes in a couple of threads (yah, guess what, I've done that), but when told in one way or another that that's a no-no, I respected that and learned from it. Someone that isn't willing to respect others and the mods deserve to get baned. but the other people and the mods need to give that person the benifit of the doubt, that maybe they were taken the wrong way or maybe they're are having a hidiously bad day. I don't know, maybe I'm just too tolerant of people, but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

Even if you don't Like the Grateful Dead, please read the lyrics.

Artist: The Grateful Dead
Song: Uncle John's Band

Well the first days are the hardest days,
Don't you worry any more, 'Cause when life looks like easy
Street, there is danger at your door.
Think this through with me, let me know your mind.
Woh - oh, what I want to know, is are you kind?

It's a buck dancer's choice my friend; better take my advice.
You know all the rules by now and the fire from ice.
Will you come with me, won't you come with me?
Woh - oh, what I want to know, will you come with me?

Goddamn, well I declare, have you seen the like?
Their walls are built of cannonballs, their motto is
Don't tread on me. Come hear Uncle John's Band playing
To the tide, come with me, or go alone.

It's the same story the crow told me;
It's the only one he knows.
Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go.
Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait,
Woh - oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?

I live in a silver mine and I call it Beggar's Tomb;
I got me a violin and I beg you call the tune
Anybody's choice, I can hear your voice.
Woh - oh, what I want to know, how does the song go?

Come hear the Uncle John's Band by the riverside
Got some things to talk about, here beside the risin' tide
Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide,
Come on along, or go alone,
He's come to take his children home.
Woh - oh, what I want to know, how does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's Band by the riverside,
Got some things to talk about here beside the risin' tide.
Come hear Uncle John's Band playing to the tide, come on
Along or go alone, he's come to take his children home.

I feel I've come alittle late to the party...
This is a hard topic to get straight. Bans won't really stop personal attacks and name calling. This an internet forum, it comes with the territory. Anonymity breeds assholes. As nice as it would be, not everyone will get along. Clashes will happen, and harsh word will be written. Where to draw the line.....I couldn't say, nor would I want to. I certainly don't envy your position.
I personally don't care what anyone says about me. I take it with a grain of salt. No offence, but this forum and the people here are not that important in my life to get so worked up about. You all seem like nice people and I like being here, but for better or worse, I will most likely never meet any of you in 'real life'. We will never hang out and watch a movie together.
I don't know if this is any help at all, but here it is anyway.....
