Audition is a brilliant film, and one that truly secured Miike's place in the exalted circle of horror masters. I watched it for the first time without knowing anything about the movie previously... Needless to say, I was quite affected when what I thought to be a harmless romance went horribly awry.

Audition

Looks like I missed the original thread - thanks for "moving" me.

Horribly awry? I think even that's a pretty big understatement!

My friend hinted about the torture. I usually try to avoid watching extreme scenes like those. Gore never bothers me - just prolonged suffering.

Just a softie I guess.

this movie is quite scary, But have you guys relized that the japaneese have been making hte most terrifying movies these days?

The Mothman 11-22-2005 07:17 PM

boring for the most part. decent ending. very wierd.

I was severely dissappointed by Audition. The first half of the movie was like a gentle TV drama. I JUST managed to stay awake, ready for the second half, which did improve a bit. There were SOME creepy moments, and a nice S&M scene at the end. But all in all it didn't live up to the hype. Maybe I was expecting too much. If I'd watched it not knowing that it was a horror film, then it might have had more of an impact.

I thought the Audition was a terrific movie. The slowness in developing the characters added to my horror. From the beginning I felt the man was going to get something he deserved at the end, toying with lives the way he did, manipulating an audition so he can decide who is ok for him. His chauvenist conduct had to be severely punished. It made me wonder if this story worked that way because of the Japanese male culture. Are things still that male dominated and women submissive over there? The shy softness and gentility of the main character made her actions more horrific. Her torture was playful and done with giggling glee. That moving sack too - great shiver. And did she vomit in a plate and feed it to the thing in the sack? Tsk Tsk Tsk. Too cool.

I orginally saw clips on Bravo's 100 greatest moments in horror and was intregued by Audition. It was shown on the Indy channel not long after. I thought it was good, but has been said already was a little slow to get started.

i loved the slow and uncertain start - it really didn't feel like a horror film until it got near the middle - that made the ending all the better for me

RavageRitual 12-19-2005 05:17 PM

Just picked it up today, watching it in like 10 mins.

PR3SSUR3 12-25-2005 07:20 AM

Spallalala 01-13-2006 04:05 AM

I didn't see it all. But the bit I did see ( where she slices a few things off ) seemed like something I would wanna see haha.

Buffy_101 01-23-2006 11:33 AM

I loved the movie but i'm a bit confused...

"Spoilers!!"

After he passes out how does he know what she does and whats happened to her in her past and even very recent "Stepfather killing", how does he know all this stuff?

Does anybody know?

Abominus 03-11-2006 07:29 PM

She gets kicked off the stairs by horny son who promptly calls the police while dad sans one foot and not likely to keep the other is staring at the psycho while she repeats a previous conversation.

Thats a mouthful...punctuation is a tool of the devil.

I thought it was great, spends an hour and a half building uo the relationship and twenty minutes making you squirm.

A little confusing near the end like many of Miike's films.

Cool beans.

persuasian70 03-13-2006 03:34 PM

I just saw the director's cut of Audition last night. I really have a hard time categorizing this movie as a horror movie. I would almost consider this a psychological thriller. It was like a sick and twisted version of Fatal Attraction. I didn't mind the slow pacing of the film at the beginning. There were some genuinely funny and touching moments. Where this film lost me is after he passes out. Then he starts having all of these visions and dreams that did not make much sense to me. The last 15min was disturbing and it made me more uncomfortable than scared. I thought the film could have ended better. I mean what the hell was she spraying at the boy, Breath spray? I mean I think she would have been better off hitting him in the head.

Maybe I was expecting too much, but I would give the movie a 6/10.

iheartkubrick 04-05-2006 08:29 PM

By the love of God that movie was terrible. Maybe it's just because I find Japanese entertainment to be absolutely revolting in every possible way (except for sailor moon), but that movie was really bad. I mean if you like watching senseless torture then I guess the ending of this boring flick is for you, if you can stay awake until then that is.

noctuary 04-06-2006 05:20 AM

Looks like someone completely missed the point. I don't see how you could say that the ending scene was "senseless." The entire film was building up to that point. That's like saying that the final half hour of the Godfather was senseless.

you "heart" Kubrick, but yet you can't handle a real slow moving movie. a potboiler, if you will.

apparently you haven't seen any of Kubrick's films.

Abominus 04-06-2006 06:58 PM

Bwahahahaha. And don't forget Barry Lyndon. I love that movie, but DAMN it's slowly paced.

ShepisFan 04-22-2006 04:48 AM

I saw this one like 3-4 years ago and has to be one of the worst movies I have ever seen, and I've seen a lot. Slow, boring and I didn't found the torture scenes worth watching this. I really don't understand what people find so good about this movie.
