dont sweat it - you're living in the country where some of the finest filmmakers ever lived.

I love french films - i cant recall seeing any i haven't liked.

Vodstok 06-06-2005 06:10 AM

And i cant recall having seen any :)

The guy who made City of Lost Children made Alien: Ressurection. So they can make shit, at least when they are making American movies.

jeunet - briliant filmmaker.

i didnt mind ressurection - but i find that a lot of foreign directors first forreys into american cinema are a bit shakey.

(i.e. John Woo - Hard Target)

and thats a fucking crime !!

hellfire1 06-06-2005 06:16 AM

hmmm..... of the top of my head...

un indien dans la ville, blueberry (franco-american, but still ), immortel, le pacte des loups (brotherhood of the wolf which i hated), le diner des cons (which i could never find funny), travaux, les rivières pourpres (could've been good, shame really), romance x...

there are good french movies yes, but get this, the french themselves don't really like french films. so go figure !

one i do highly recommend though : la haine. great movie.

mathieu kassovitz with gothika.

Vodstok 06-06-2005 06:24 AM

Ugh. Gothika was grade a bullshit with a side of crap. I love Charles Dutton, but i wanted to smack him for that one...

And ressurection was a decent Sci-fi action movie, but as an Alien Movie, it was garbage. Which is shame, it had a great cast.

i LOVED brotherhood of the wolf !!!

actually i'm more familiar with the older french films - the 'new wave' films ... bu the odd reasonably current one that i get my hands on - i usually enjoy them too..

i dont think we'll be going to any movies together too soon :D

Vodstok 06-06-2005 06:53 AM

Well, there IS an obvious difference of taste there.. and that whole "3000 miles of open ocean" thing that might slow things down too.

i liked what i saw of it so far ...

i havent seen the whole thing yet.

(i was interrupted watching it and had to leave it - once i leave a movie it takes me a while to watch it again - weird personal quirk)

i got about 25 min in and thought it was pretty damn cool ..

hellfire1 06-06-2005 10:32 AM

*in cheesy french accent* ach.. you break my heart !

even the french didn't like that movie !

edit : it's alright though. we can go to movies together and argue about 'em after ;)

Vodstok 06-06-2005 10:33 AM

how ? just how ?? lol nah i actually know people who swear by it as well. i'm still puzzled.

Vodstok 06-06-2005 10:39 AM

I remember watching it with him and he kept saying "Wait, watch this!"

And i kept saying "What?! you cant be serious... you are enjoying this?"

"yeah, why?"

he was also an avid fan of Beach Babes from Beyond, and became a philosophy major in college because he loved patrick swayze in Road house....

No, i am not kidding....
