yeah, that was definately the appeal it had for me too..

There are so many better action flicks that I have a hard time buying that this is where the appeal comes from. The notion that Brandon Lee's death brings extra attention to the film certainly makes sense, but I don't think it can be the whole story. My theory about the popularity of The Crow rests on the following:

1. It is one of the first modern goth-inspired films, and those sad little goth kids need something to look up to.

2. The revenge tale it tells is perfect for these same goth kids who inevitably get picked on in high school. The film expresses their desire for revenge against their tormenters.

There are plenty of reasons for liking the Crow. Coming back from the dead for vengeance is an ancient plot that has always been popular. Although the so called "goth crowd" might be partly responsible ror it's cult status, it's a movie that anyone can enjoy.

It's very stylized & atmospheric; there was nothing else quite like it around at the time. I'm not so sure why you seem so stuck on the theory that you must be a "goth" to like it; I enjoyed it. The comic was also very popular before it was adapted for the movie, giving the film a large potential fanbase before it was made.

It's got one of my favorite actors, Michael Wincott. The Brandon Lee death most certainly effected the popularity, giving it it's own unique mystique. There's enough action in it to keep it fun and interesting.

So, there you have it: A unique take on a popular storyline with good acting, great atmosphere and enough action to keep it from being too serious. What's NOT to like?

HAve a little bit of a bone to pick, do we? You dont have to be goth to like it, and if you dont, then dont buy it. im sure your 9 bucks will be missed.

Oh, and just because it is dark does not necessarily make it goth. the Popularity of soemthign with a particular group doesnt make it part of that group. Just because the French like Jerry Lewis, doesnt make him french.

yeah i never thought of the crow as a goth movie - although i would see why 'goths' would like it - same as nightmare before xmas ..

both films fit their sensibilities (death and a lot of the colour black) .. but i sure dont believe either were intended to be goth vehicles.

i would never say i liked it because of the action .. but there are some good action scenes in it ... (revenge scenes anyway)

i think its a very well rounded film .. something for everyone ..

The Crow is way gothic (I'll not use the word "goth") because it fixates on sadness and bitterness and lost love. It's not, to me, particularly about the eyeshadow.

But yeah, it's a gothic-flavored avenging ghost story, interpreted as a heavily stylized action film. An old thing polished up with a brand new look.

High Plains Drifter with a cool soundtrack and martial arts :)


The gunfight at the end with "After the Flesh" playing in the background ranks up with the shootout at the end of Aliens as one of the best ever.
