"Vampire Hunters" has a nice opening scene. Perhaps not the scariest ever, but the introduction of the vampire character is pretty intimidating.

The Haunted.. I saw that movie when I was a kid and it totally freaked me out. I didn't watch it again...

When A Stranger Calls was the first thing I thought of...

But Dog Soldiers started out really cool, too

I can't really think of anything recent....I think Saw started out okay...

They're kinda "mainstream" but Scream 1 and The Ring's opening scenes scared me the first time I saw them, and they still scare me now.

NOTLD is another notable one. But that whole movie is just amazing, so its hard to pick one scene.

Sleepy Hollow had a pretty creepy opening scene, it had that "live theatre" feel to it, but it was still creepy.

But if we're going all out "most badass", then From Dusk til Dawn.

You're right about from Dusk til Dawn. The opening sequence is righteous (to use a term from the eighties). The crazy counter dude was a cool character with the fact that it was about three minutes of great acting while acting. He didn't go down easily either. That was cool.

Persona's opening was really unnerving
