imo all that is required, is the mod who carries out the merge, to add a line at the beginning of the thread, to say what and why its been done, nothing more.

Perhaps if you had a thread merged, and could no longer access it through your email reply system, and didn't know what was going on, you'd understand.

yeah valid point, but that error is due to the inadequacy of the forum software, not being able to add the email link notification to merged posts in threads, not moderator intervention. There is software that does this.
