The Strange Case of Sherlock Holmes & Arthur Conan Doyle

Wassup Rockers

This ruled. The first half suggested it was goning to be Kids v.2 but it really exceeded my expectations by the end. Great soundtrack too. I dug this flick a lot. Check it out sometime people...

Death Warmed Up

Classic Kiwi splatter makes its way onto DVD. A lot of the plot isn't fully explained which kinda annoyed me (maybe I wasn't paying enough attention) but I ended up just sitting back and enjoying the ride. I'd love to see more stuff like this make its way out of NZ but it seems the country is determined to make Braindead 100000 times over. That shits tired as fuck NZ needs to go the dark and twisted route.

Absurd

Awesome stuff Anthropophagous had more creepy moments but this is a better flowing/crafted flick. It'd be great to see it tidied up for DVD but there's issues with the rights I believe. Essential viewing if you love your old school splatter/nasties.

Ugetsu monogatari (1954)

Poetic and haunting, like a dream which constantly threatens to become a nightmare but remains enchanting and calm. Not directed but orchestrated by Kenji Mizoguchi, this is a story about cause and effect; each action has a reaction and everything happens not in the manner of stage drama but instead with a natural urgency, and even when the story becomes harsh and incredible I believed and understood that what was done was done, that life is what it is. The story is helped by gorgeous set design, luscious costumes and serene camerawork, all of which form a kind of trinity of visual delight. The actors play their part with enthusiasm but also, again, with the mindset that there is nobody watching them and they are just going about their lives. This honest storytelling allows the supernatural drama to seem totally plausable, and consequently we notice no limitations to the tale.

A young woman finds herself kidnapped by a mysterious figure who suspects her husband of stealing millions from a crime syndicate..

A time passing low budget average thriller.

Cool be interested in reading what you think about it. It def belongs in that Punk Rock films thread from awhile back. I can see people not getting into it as much as I did.

Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (1974)

It was just OK. I can live without much of a plot, and I can take dull characters, and I'm not the type that needs non-stop action from start to finish...but still, there has to be something to hold my attention. This didn't have much at all - the actors seem like they're just phoning it in and you can't really care about any of the characters, the story is all but non existent, and even though it does have some damn cool chase sequences, they were way too few and far between to make things worthwhile. There was some nice conflict starting to come out near the end, but it was quickly dismissed - too bad.

Stick with stuff like Race With the Devil or Vanishing Point if you're into this kind of flick. This one isn't awful, but there's not much to see.

Thats the godzilla EDF ship right?

_____V_____ 07-30-2009 06:49 AM

Haha, yep. Its a hybrid of that and the spaceship of Star Blazers.

The flick was Japan's answer to Star Wars back in the late 1970s. Supposedly big-budget, and the last of Toho's big screeners of that era. The flick sunk, and Toho didnt reappear again till the late 80s.

Its a blast though. Total cheesy entertainment, if you are a fan of bad effects.
