Double Indemnity (1944)
The ultimate film-noir thriller. Not only does it feature some of the best written dialogue I've ever heard (delivered by an astounding cast), it tells a twisted story of love and murder and keeps the viewer guessing right to the bitter end. The beauty of the story isn't so much in the plot itself - though there are certainly a few shockers, most events aren't really that surprising. But being told from the eyes of Walter Neff added an extra dimension to things, and made the entire proceedings that much more powerful. An all-time classic with one of the best scripts ever written...and a new found favourite of mine. |

The original must be one of the most overtly Christian/Right wing propaganda flicks to come out of Hollywood. Haven't watched the Tom Cruise one does it do the same thing but with Scientology/Bush era paranoia? |
My last seen film was "The Mist" (the King adaptation) which I thought was good, I liked most of the characters and found them believeable and flawed although I excpected more to happen, I didn't think so much of it would be in the supermarket place
I'd definetly watch it again |

nah - the new one is played straight and is actually extremely effective in parts. i agree about the 'origional' what a miserable movie. and i agree with Des.. dakota fanning nearly drove me nuts in the remake... i would have fed her to the aliens. I still say Peter Jackson should do a PROPER version of this film. |
Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
Doesn't get much funnier than Python humor, and this is some of their best work. Even though this one isn't quite on par with Holy Grail in terms of hilarity, it delivers a biting, vicious satire of Christianity and some truly brilliant sequences - Pontius Pilate's "Biggus Dickus" tirade, the Judean People's Front (or was it the People's Front of Judea?), a lesson in Latin delivered by a Centurion, and - of course - a classic chorus of crucified convicts singing about the "Bright Side of Life". Classic Monty Python - the perfect comedic mixture of nonsense, surrealism, satire and though-provoking humor. |
Knowing (2009)
Probably the smartest Hollywood movie that I've seen in ages - a very pleasant surprise. Don't pass on this one just because the trailers make it look like mass-produced, lowest common denominator mindless sci-fi: it's nothing of the sort. It has some flaws to be sure - mostly, I found the CGI a bit poor - but the script more than makes up for it. Personally I put no stock in fate or destiny whatsoever, and therefore I found things a bit unbelievable at first...but once you get in the right mindset, everything makes perfect sense and comes together seamlessly. Cage even does a good job here, which is something we sadly haven't been able to say for awhile. Thank you very much for suggesting this one _V_ - I probably wouldn't have bothered if not for the praise it's been getting here on HDC. I'll gladly second the recommendation. |
Thanks for watching it, buddy. And for liking it! :)
Especially after watching such a brilliant satire like Life of Brian, Knowing had some really mighty steps to follow (in your viewing court)...and I m glad it passed through nicely. |
