Black Orpheus / Orfeu Negro (1959)
A gorgeous retelling of the Orpheus myth, set against the backdrop of Rio de Janeiro's Carnaval. Really enjoyed this one...nothing short of a treat for the senses. It's a non-stop array of colour and music, imagery and symbolism. Brilliantly directed and featuring a wonderful cast of little known actors, this is a must see for any fans of cinematic art - especially if you're also interested in Greek myth. The way the story of Orpheus and Eurydice is adapted here is fascinating. |
