I caught The Illusionist last week... Great acting/cinematography. The plot was a little thin and you saw the ending coming from a mile away, but all in all a good flick.

Awesome movie. Kind of ashamed at myself for putting it off so long. Loved it from beginning to end, but that ending was especially cool...

Eulogy

I don't know how this delightfully dark comedy slipped under my radar for so long but I'm glad I finally discovered it! This was great! Well acted, funny plot, funny story, and lots of notable performances. I watched this with virtually NO expectations because I hadn't heard a thing about it, (A friend left it at my house on accident.) so needless to say I was very pleasently surprised. This just zoomed up towards the top of the heap for me in terms of dark comedies. If you haven't seen this, I recommend it.

Just watched Starship Troopers....cheesball fun.
Casper Van Dien's chin scares me.

PeaSoupintheye 09-20-2006 03:28 AM

The last lot of films I watched over the weekend...

Graveyard Disturbance

I am still unsure as to whether I really actually like this cheeseball of a movie. It's not a bit scary, creepy or disturbing (unless you include the acting and script) but it is mildly amusing in parts and overall fair entertainment value. It's the age old plot of a group of disaffected teenagers out to cause mayhem when after outrunning the police (check out the Madonna True Blue Transfer on the van...very hip ;)) when they come across an ancient cemetary which comes alive at night. Exploring they find an old 'locals' pub where they dine and are challenged to spend a night until sunrise where they will win the much coveted treasure left for generations...many have tried - all have failed...you get the gist. Possibly worth a watch if you like 80's cheese and soundtracks...don't expect any scares - or gore.

6/10

Repulsion

This dark thriller by the brilliant Roman Polanski is a quality portrayal of a woman's descent into madness. Set in a dingy apartment this movie reeks of dark forboding terror beyond the shadows of the dimly lit rooms. Polanski pulls this off brilliantly depicting a woman desperately fascinated and equally repelled by men and as the movie reaches it's climax, the walls continue to crack as does her mental state thus ending in fatalities for the men trying to seduce her. A thoroughly enjoyable experience throughout, another classic from Polanski.

7.5/10

The Last Horror Movie

I have to say although not expecting much when I popped this into my DVD player this movie really exceeded exectations by some way. The movie starts like it is to be yet another teen slasher but **SPOILER** within 5 mins the film is turned upon it's head when cleverly it appears that the movie you intended to see has been taped over and replaced with a serial killer's video diary. The movie begs many questions non more poignant than 'if you are truely appalled then...'why are you watching'? I really enjoyed this little indy film. I found it really different and refreshing. If you can imagine an imalgimation of films such as August Underground, Devil's Experiment - Guinea Pig 1, Scrapbook mixed with Henry Portrait of A Serial KIller then this I imagine would be something like the outcome. Some excellent gore scenes and a cool ending make me give this a resounding

8.5/10

We Were Soldiers

Based on fact this Vietnam War epic I found to be an excellent entertaining movie. Mel Gibson heads the cast and puts in a spot on performance. The movie is well paced with terrific action sequences and touching moments especially with the wives of Vietnam. I found this to be a compelling watch.

Kinda vaguely watched "phantoms", which I'd initially hired for my gfs 15yo neice who wanted some horror stuff...I liked it the first time I saw it, and it was "ok", but didn't really stand the test of time. I'm sure the book was much better.
Worth a weekly hire if you've not yet seen it, those that have, will probably feel much the same way I did.

That's the one. It has David Keith, Ryan O'Neal, and the guy who played the father in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. It's OK, nothing spectacular. There's another guy in it that plays a military person that I've seen in lots of stuff but don't know his name - he didn't play it very well. It was actually a little painful to watch his scenes.

Re-make or original??? Hopefully the re-make the original is fantastic where as the remake is kinda lame.

Dario Argento's Deep Red

Spectacular film. Phenominal tension, decent acting, and a well-executed ending. The pacing was a little slow, and when I say the pacing's a little slow it's legit, because I'm all for long, atomspheric movies.

It's no Suspiria, but it comes close at times.

I watched Slingblade again for the millionth time. It's one of those movies where, even if you own it and you see it come on tv, you just can't stop watching. Dwight Yokum cracks me up, especially when he calls the boys over to jam.
