The Hitcher (1986)

First time watching this one, and I loved it - a genre classic for sure. Hauer is perfect...scary son of a bitch.

I was surprised too, thought it would be right up my street but ended up really disappointed.



It could and should have been alot more. It just seemed like a three of four films had been hacked together and, Im not sure who decided post-apocolyptic society will always end up as some sort of punk utopia, but that didnt work either. Real shame.

Not sure what to make of this one. The action was relentless and entertaining and some of the choreography on the fight scenes was excellent. Liam Neesons character had a great ruthless streak also, however it was just so far fetched that even the usual suspension of disbelief needed for these films could not be suspended anywhere near enough. Good action but completely stupid

House on Haunted Hill (1999). Very fun movie with over the top twists. Even the Hollywood ending (which i usually cannot stand) worked for me . Ashe.

Saw Star Trek and it was FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC! I am not a Trekkie nor did I really get into any of the movies or anything except for Khan but boy was this movie just amazing. The story was great and well written, the action and visuals were astounding, the acting was incredible, and it was just all around fun.

Highlights for me were:

Karl Urban as McCoy and Simon Pegg as Scotty.

The Virgin Spring (1960)

An extraordinary tale about error and faith. The powerful image of a man betrayed by his god, left alone and without comfort or redemption but still giving himself to what he knows must exist is a poignant statement, and even if God has given up on this father we are given the chance to forgive him. Bergman's use of such a confined space here is intruiging, and the film's tone has echoes of Kurosawa in it. Shadows can be warm blankets or cold rashes, and what is originally set up in the mise-en-scene as comfortably quaint evntually becomes suffocating. Max Von Sydow is spectacular in an extremely revealing role, and Birgitta Valberg is tragically innocent. A breathtaking achievment.

And I introduced a friend to one of my all-time favorites last night:

City Lights (1931)

One of the most beautiful motion pictures I have ever seen. There is a gorgeous simplicity in Chaplin's stories, and sometimes by engaging the most direct and sincere emotions he succeeds far more triumphantly than the heaviest human dramas. If casual viewers are only going to be exposed to one Chaplin film, this is it; the sheer delight found in scenes like the dance hall and boxing ring is indescribable, a kind of joy found exclusively in this film and never quite duplicated within this artist's career or any other. The Tramp here is a dependent character, a man who has been down far too long and finds himself degraded, abused, and falsely accused constantly. He gets up, though, time after time, a true testament to faith in oneself and to the rewards that follow endurance like this. If there was ever a more touching romance put on celluloid I am unaware of it; when the famous ending brings the picture to a close there can be no doubt that Chaplin was a genious and a humanist, a man who felt the work he did rather than just produce it. Deeply moving and impossible to resist.

Hatchet


Extremely enjoyable and over the top with a healthy smattering of well executed humour. Standard set up of a boat tour stranded in the swamps where a deformed man, Victor Crowley, roams in a psychopathic rage. The performances are good, looks great and the gore is extreme. Well worth viewing.

Evil murderous children. What more can you ask for?

Well, maybe a good director who knows about atmosphere, a bigger budget and a talented camera man who doesn't panic every time the pacing goes up.

Nothing wrong with the story, it just needed to be executed better horror-wise.

Star Trek ... loved it. good fun.

Star Trek--I had fun watching it, but I would've preferred a movie that didn't feature alternate universe stuff--since it's a reboot movie that "starts" the universe, I think it's annoying to have more than one universe. Aside from that, though, I thought it was fine...a good summer popcorn flick.
