Ferret you quit?? I'm soooo cunfuzzled at this moment it soo has melted my brain...I come on and the thread is gone gone gone....now its back with many pages added :o

RIP Chrono, Bwind, Freak and Ferret (really??) I had fun playing (the game) with all of you! ~S~

ferretchucker 07-14-2010 02:19 AM

I really wish I could have stayed for the end, and I did plan to. It was only last Thursday that it dawned on me that I was going on a two week cruise starting Saturday. I decided to wait until I got onto the boat to see if there was free wifi or anything like that (internet wasn´t too helpful beforehand) but alas when I arrived I discovered they were charging 50 pence a minute which really stacked up. In fact, when I came online the other day to quickly let V know I couldn´t continue in the competition and post that message it cost me 7 Pounds (I also checked facebook). The only reason I´m able to post this is because we´ve found an Internet Cafe in Cartegena.

Really sorry guys, I feel so guilty considering the sacrifices some of you made to keep me in. To the remaining five I say good luck, you all really deserve to win.

And to V, I say thank you very much for an incredibly enjoyable competition. I sincerely hope we get to see a forth but as you said, that might be unlikely.

hahahahahaha! Thanks to the BR Authority for appointing this 3 interestingly funny looking judges for the remaining tensed rounds of this year. This will definitely add some extra pressure on the contestants & drama in the last few showdowns. Btw, why The Radio Man looks like a judge of a Kung Fu court?

With due respect, can we have some background story of this 3 surprise judges?;)

He then turns towards the host and nods once, sternly looking back at Roshiq.

The host takes the piece of paper and turns it around, and reads aloud from the other printed side of the card.

Roshiq's Query - "What do you think has been the single biggest factor in contributing to the downfall of horror from the early 90s till now?

1 - Too much corporate interference from the studios?

2 - Lack of original talent and material?

3 - Too much emphasis on sequels and remakes?
"

You have TWENTY-FOUR HOURS to think over your answer, and post it in this thread accordingly, Roshiq. Feel free to do any sort of research on the subject asked. Remember, you have to choose ONE option from the THREE given above.

Your answer will be then analyzed and awarded points on a scale of 0-10 by the Judge, who will then proceed to decide if you will incur any sort of punishment OR get any sort of reward for it.

He watches inside the Justice Chamber at everyone, silently. The special glass hides him from the view of all the people inside the Chamber, and he whispers something into a special microphone fitted near his mouth.

"I am here."

Inside the Chamber, the host immediately touches his right ear and turns his head slowly towards the direction of the glass. He gives an almost imperceptible nod to the man behind it.

He walks straight at the closed big doors guarded by two armed guards on either side.

"Halt," one of the guards says, swiftly moving between the doors and the silhouetted figure.

His eyes glare at the guard, and he turns slightly to face him. The golden badge shining brightly on his proud chest beams its light at the guard, almost silently yelling it's bold printed letters at him in reply.

The guard reads it and gulps once audibly, looking back at the eyes of the figure.

"Big apologies. I didn't know who you were."

The other guard closes his gaping mouth and immediately throws the big doors open.

The figure doesn't utter a word and strides straight in towards the big round table in the center. The host sees him and immediately begins to announce his arrival.

3 - Too much emphasis on sequels and remakes?"

From the 3 options of answers from our honorable judge the Simian Man, I chose no. 1 = Too much corporate interference from the studios.

Analysis/points to support my answer:

Apart from a nice little boom of serial killer sub genre & some acclaimed original films like In the mouth of Madness, Candyman & Jacob's ladder two main problems pushed horror backward during 90's:
1. The proliferation of nonstop slasher and gore films in the eighties.
2. The young audience who feasted on the blood and morbidity of the previous decade grew up, and the replacement audience for films of an imaginative nature were being captured instead by the explosion of special effects possibilities with CGI.
Directors and producers started to feel somehow as if they have to show more in order to get more from the audience and make sure it will appeal to as wide an audience as possible. Money-shark studios and directors alike tend to borrow successful scenes or effects from one film, and repeat it consistently throughout every subsequent film, relying on those said scenes and effects to provide entertainment in lieu of any originality or plot. What happened to keeping the audience in suspense by waiting until the finale to reveal the monster or the breathtaking big murder scene? Horror films then begin to producing a chain reaction, the more creatures and blood and guts that films show, the more the audience 'will want to see in the future'. Studios sacrificing substance for shock treatment.
It was supposed to happen while the rapid commercialization goes in an expanding industry like entertainment and media, all that matters to the people that put up money to fund a project is cold hard cash or an assurance of secure & quick return.
A blockbuster film is not always necessarily a good one, but under the hands of corporate culture studios seem to watch the numbers more often than the movies they produce, and one blockbuster is apt to be followed by five others bearing extreme similarities. Of course, this results in numbers dropping as audiences tire of the same drivel, leading the studios to find the next big blockbuster to reproduce into oblivion. New and eager filmmakers may in some case repeatedly turned away in favor of the next remake of a horror classic. This isn’t going to become an argument about how remakes nowadays are abundant and terrible; it’s just going to say that this is how it is now. This is the popular trend and people are sick of it. Of course, it doesn’t matter that people are sick of it as long as the money is made by the studios.
Stuart Gordon once said that the investors for Re-Animator gave him these guidelines: Has to be horror, has to be feature length (which at the time was 75 minutes at minimum), and had to have a final cut delivered by a certain date, which was around a year after they were to begin principal production. Nowadays, these types of deals are unheard of. Independence of creativity have to fight & get its license under the seal of corporate demand.

In the last note I like to add the following quote of Joe Dante said in an interview at Edinburgh International Film Festival, 2009..."There was not the same degree of freedom as there had been in the Seventies, but there was not the kind of studio interference that we see today with the corporate mentality. That was just coming in, but it hadn't fully taken hold. Now it's like working for a bank."

Michelle's Query - "You're a producer who is going to "reboot" the Dr. Phibes movies. Will you do a sequel or a remake (and why) and who are you going to cast that will please the die-hard Price fans and younger viewers as well?"
As a producer who is going to "reboot" the Dr. Phibes movies I would be inclined to do a remake. The reason I would do a remake is because the original is 39 years old. There are generations of movie goers who have never seen the original, so a sequel at this point would be a crime. The new generations of fans need a proper introduction to the genius of Dr. Anton Phibes.

I would like to cast Gary Oldman as the Doctor. Oldman possesses an otherworldy ability to transform himself into antagonists that you can empathize with, which is key to the character of Dr. Phibes. Plus Gary Oldman could grow a sweet moustache and he is extremely adept at working in an elaborate and fantasical setting.

First off, it’s important to point out that no matter how commercially successful the Twilight Saga is, it is not horror. It is simply a teen romance that happens to borrow from the vampire mythos. It fails to deliver what would typically be expected of any film associated with the genre and sits much more comfortably placed within romance. The movies fail to offer more than teenage angst and romance. You will find more bite in an episode of Count Duckula than any one of the twilight movies….

That said, there can be no doubt that movie makers will always look for safe investments and given the commercially success of the franchise, it is almost certain to spawn copies and dictate a certain desire to tap into the same market. I’m not convinced this will lead to a move away from what could be termed ‘traditional’ horror since the target audience is simply not the same.

A good movie is a good movie and if you have a good movie it would not be necessary to throw a teen romance story in there to ‘ensure’ commercial success. That route, while it may be applied by some movie makers, demonstrates a lack of creativity and quality and serves only to highlight a complacent market. Commercial success should always be ensured through quality rather than following predetermined formulas of success.

While there is a market for traditional horror or pure blood and gore movies they will continue to find their audience. The target audience of traditional horror would not be comparable to that of the Twilight Saga and as such is unlikely to directly affect the production of traditional horror. I think it’s fair to assume horror is here to stay, with or without the Twilight Saga.

I find the reasoning behind the choice of doing a remake somewhat simplistic. A new sequel could afford an opportunity for marketting the first 2 films- an out of the box rerelease that could be a cinematic event- as well as new boxed set DVD collection, preparing the way for a new sequel. Still, there are only two possible answers, so I give 3 points to that part of the question.

Second part- casting of Gary Oldman is inspired. He has cred within the genre in many films, he has the chops to live up to the role, and he might even create a portrayal that is a fitting homage to Price. There are only a few other actors I could see attempt the role. Points for this part- 4.5.

Total points- 7.5. An above average answer. No punishment. Small reward.

FreddyMyers 07-17-2010 06:15 PM

I am eliminating from history the movie Psycho. Known as the perfect movie at the perfect time. I picked Psycho because without this movie there would still be the undead, monsters, ghosts and even psychotic killers. The fact of life is that there always has been and always will be “psychos.” The atmosphere, camera work and score had more to do with the success of it way more than the other 2 movies. More so than most movies period. The sad fact of life is the Psychos do exist and eventually there would be a movie made about them. Peeping Tom came out a couple of months before Psycho but didn’t come close to the success. The reason for this is Big Al, not the movie itself. If he’d never thought to do Psycho his way of directing another movie would have still made him a classic icon, but if you add in previously unknown sexuality, a couple screeching violins and a theatre antic (You weren’t allowed to leave the theatre once the movie began, which created a buzz throughout America) you would now have the classic movie it has become.
Humans are human, which means their gonna do stupid, scary, crazy and even psychotic shit, all of which can be recorded into history and therefore have a movie made about it. That is why Psycho is expendable, it would still be going on weather a movie was made about it or not. What would be missed is the way Alfred created his own atmosphere, and use of camera angles and shots. But that’s not to say we wouldn’t have seen that same in another movie. Cant understate how important the human element is for a movie like Psycho. Without psycho there still would be serial killer movies just because there would still real life serial killers. Movies that involve the human element can be recreated but it’s the director that can make that same movie a classic. Now think of NOTLD never being thought of, or the notion of dead people being reanimated back to life or a monster in the moonlight relentlessly chasing after you. Now you just eliminated a huge percentage of horror period! Psychos will and have always existed but the same can’t be said about reanimated and/or put back together corpses. The human aspect of psycho is its biggest contributor but also the reason horror could exist without it ever being created. The same cant exactly be said about the others.
As for the others, I choose Night Of The Living Dead to be the most deserving of its classic status. This is in no way any disrespect to Frankenstein but think of the horror genre as a whole, now think of it without the undead. Without the living dead there is a huge hole in horror itself. Without Frankenstien there is still Dracula, Wolfman and other creatures or monsters in which early cinema could still create and harness the horror element all while still scaring audiences. Out of sheer numbers alone you would have to say NOTLD is a more important movie which would in return be more deserving of “classic” status. Frankenstien is one of the best stories ever told but there are times in which you are sympathizing with the villain. By the end of the story you’re not sure whether its him or us that the villain is, which should be taken as a compliment to the story itself. How can you see frank as a villain when as tosses the girl over the bridge thinking she would float just like the flowers. Now think of Zombies attacking the poor girl and pouring over the bridge with her trying to devour as much flesh as possible. Monsters and zombies are known as a few sub genres of horror, not Frankensteins’ and zombies. The percentage and effect that NOTLD had on the genre is the reasoning behind me stating that it is more deserving of the Classic status.
