GET OUT
This was, in my mind quite a competent (especially for the first timer) and somewhat unique "horror" film...though I'm not sure I'd call it all out horror. Perhaps phychological horror? Managed to establish a fairly tense and uncomfortable atmosphere even before things get "weird", with the use of musical score and some of the camera work. Filmed in some really nice scenery too. The first hypnotism scene itself was well done quite full on, and the exposure to the "method" that the audience got almost puts you in a bit of a relaxed state too which I found clever. What was *actually* going on was quite unexpected...I had thought it to be much more simplistic than it ended up being. Nicely done. I could always tell from some of the Key and Peele sketches that the guys were a little bit horror influenced, but to be honest I wasn't expecting to like this movie as much as I did, at all. Yes the main character/victim is black. Yes the antagonists are white, but it never comes across as a pro black/anti white type movie...It actually treats the whole race thing with a little bit of levity and that fun awkwardness on both sides, though yeah for those that have called it a propaganda movie? No. If you guys haven't seen it yet...I'd recommend it for those that are after something a little fresh and different. For those that *have* seen both this, and Key & Peele? The hypnotism scene. The "sunken place"...I have to say the only thing that kept coming to mind when he was floating through space? "I said biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch" |

The Woodsman A nuanced and thought provoking film that deserves more attention. I can not deny that it will be an uncomfortable watch at times, but I still recommend it.

Brightburn 7/10
Despite its originality Brightburn was disappointingly very cliche. The mother....::roll eyes:: Had some pretty gross scenes tho. That was cool. |

I spit on your grave - I did not know this was a remake, so in retrospect you start looking at it in those terms. As a film, it's certainly better than a lot of other remakes.
Curious to see the original now. In due time. Torture porn is something I quickly OD on. ::wink:: |

Halloween (2018)
Finally got to see this. It was.....ok. |
POSSUM.
Meh. It's got that dreamlike miserable look and feel throughout. I felt pretty let down to be honest. All a bit Ramsey Campbell. |

I liked it but it was nothing outstanding nor disturbing enough to get a higher score. I'm glad I finally saw it. I can now check it off my proverbial list. : ) 7 is a good score from me. |

If you are into romanian cinematography: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0819895/ - a good solid movie. about the same era. And of course the legendary: Filantropica. |

I recently watched Revenge (2017) the movie is in a mixture of French and English. Going in I wasn't quite sure what to expect I but I really enjoyed the film. The writing and pacing is good, the cinematography is gorgeous and gives some solid nods to the 80's. There are some really fun kill scenes and good practical effects.

Le jeune Ahmed (aka Young Ahmed) - This is the latest film by the brother pair of Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne. They are most well known for movies about social topics. One of the better know examples is their debut "Rosetta" about the life of an unemployed young girl.
Their latest delves into the life of a 13 year old boy named Ahmed who's radicalised under the influence of a local imam. The film does not shy away from showing the darker sides of his behavior, but it also at regular times reminds you that for all intents and purposes he is still a child. I won't give away the ending, but suffice it to say that it gives you plenty to think and talk about. Bad Samaritan - I wanted to see this flick since I saw the first trailer. The two main characters were believable as friends and David Tennant does a good job playing a psycho. Worth a watch. |

Dark Tower -
I'm not sure what I think. It wasn't what I was expecting. I still want to read the books. But I guess I was expecting something more epic. Something worthy of all the books that people like. I guess this was kind of generic. Almost light summer fantasy movie type. Although it does have its dark moments. I did like the tie in stuff with the other Stephen King properties. And Idris Elba always seems to turn in a good performance no matter the movie. |

Many of those shootout scenes in Dark Tower are pretty good. I do like that Western stuff. He would probably be really good in a modern or old school Western movie if he hasn't been in one yet. Something like Open Range or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. There is an ending scene in Takers almost like the one in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. And I do like how clever he is in the Luther TV show when he's after all those crazy killers. The new Luther just started and I'm looking forward to watching that. But I think he might be too old for Bond as he would probably only get in a few movies before he's in his 50s. And I'm sure they will restart the series again after Daniel Craig. I bet most actors today who want to play Bond, want to get a clean start without the baggage of the previous actor. That clean start combined with number of movies is probably what makes a good Bond in the eyes of the public. And also allows the actor to really form the character. Sean Connery and Roger Moore both made 7 Bond films and I think when people think of Bond, they think of those two actors. Idris Elba wouldn't get past four movies if he was lucky. And I don't think he would want to make only 1 or 2. |
Quote:
Roger Moore was 46 for his first Bond film, and he did 7 films! Timothy Dalton was 40, Brosnan 42. Craig will play Bond in 2020 at age 52! In Connery's last film he was 53. So Idris at 46 is just one of the later starts, but it's what they've been doing. |
