Me too.

How to Kill Your Neighbor's Dog

Very good movie and criminally overlooked.

"Funny, I knew there was a film prior to oldboy, but I was under the impression that the film of THIS title was to be the next to follow oldboy, not the first one...?"

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
OldBoy
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

There are no connections. These are the orders they were filmed in. The only similarities are the themes of revenge.

Lady Frankenstein ... not too bad of a movie. Good for a one time see on a Saturday morning. The monsters makeup was pretty bad. His head was shaped like a lightbulb and one eye was bulbous and protruding... and Thomas the simpletons wig was friggen hilarious. The ending was rushed and abrupt but other than that it was worth a see.

Well, I was in Florida for the last week, so you might think I didn't watch any movies.... Well, you couldn't be more wrong. Evidently every single day in Florida right around 3 or 4 in the afternoon, storm clouds roll in and then it rains on and off for about 2 hours. Well, the wife & I generally wound up ordering movies at that time. In addition, somtimes when she'd go to sleep a little earlier than me or something, I'd order one. Anyways, I have a week long backlog... Here goes....

Underworld: Evolution

This was a pretty cool follow up to a pretty good original. The story was only slightly confusing, but the action and gore were cool. The only big problem I have with these movies is how much they overuse the CGI but I guess that's inevitable in this day and age.

B

Ice Age: The Meltdown

This was a decent movie for the whole family, but it seemed to be aimed at the kiddies. I can't stand Queen Latifah though and she was a main character so that was one big detractor for me. The kids will like it, you might not.

Failure to Launch

Ugh! This is what I get when I let the wife pick. This movie sucked big time. The script was bad, the physical comedy seemed overdone and out of place and what the hell is Terry Bradshaw doing with a large role in a motion picture? I can't even stand to watch that doof on the halftime shows! This was a stupid chick flick with a stupid, stupid plot and very subpar comedy timing. Kathy Bates was the sole bright spot in this pile of crap.

D

Madagascar

Yeah!!! This was the animated film I had been waiting for since Toy Story! I loved it. Fun, fresh (Although not anymore, I see it has already been duplicated by Disney's The Wild) and just very well done! Ben Stiller and Chris Rock take the leads and do great and the rest of the cast, including David Scwimmer and Andy Richter round out the animated ensemble perfectly. I was entertained from start to finish.

Final Destination 3

I have always liked these Final Destination movies, more for their fun & gory death scenes than their storylines. The third is no exception to that rule. It's a great gory popcorn flicks with lots of laughs and blood, but don't go expecting the next masterpiece or anything. In all, it was exactly what I would expect, which is good because I hold this series to a fairly high standard.

B-

Basic Instinct 2

Why oh why do I ever let my wife pick the movies? This was actually a little better than I was expecting for the first hour or so because I was pretty interested in the plot, but the ending just made this pretty stupid I would say. I don't the last 10 minutes just sorta sucked and didn't really tie everything up neatly, which is what I expect out of the last 10 minutes of a psychological thriller that raises a lot of questions.... Answers! Bah, it sucked. Skip it, unless you just watch it for the sex... If that's the case, you won't be disappointed.

C-

Scary Movie 4

Hey! One of the stupidest franchises that could be good finally figured out what it was doing wrong and got rid of the Wayans brothers altogether. Good move Scary Movie franchise! Now, you're back on the right track, but you aren't there yet. This was probably about as good as the first one in the franchise and better than parts 2 and 3, but it could still be improved upon with a better script. I also think these need to stick to parodying exclusively horror movies, but that's just my opinion.... It was okay.

C

Stay Alive

When I saw this was rated PG-13 and had Malcolm (in the Middle) in it, I wasn't expecting much. It delivered. Fairly straightforward flick about a ghost in the video game that a group of kids starts playing. There was some creepy stuff, but basically this was just a new take on an old theme. I didn't hate it, but I haven't been running around recommending it to anyone either.

C

Shallow Grave

I love this movie. Danny Boyle and Ewan McGregor really show what they have always been capable of in this deeply dark morbid black comedy. Fresh, original, well acted, well directed... Probably in my personal top 20 films. If you haven't seen it, do so.

First blood was all good...based on a much better, darker book with a completely different ending, but all in all the movie did a good job. It was the sequels that gave the whole thing a dopey reputation if you ask me...THEY definately fall under the generic action movie genre, but there's a HUGE difference between 2&3 and "first blood" IMO.

I saw "The Rock" last night for maybe the fourth time...
I honestly believe that this is one of the all-time great action films.
Brilliant cast, the musical score is awesome, really works to accentuate the scenes...and the characters are great, from Cage as the fbi agent without any real "ground" experience thrown into a situation he's clearly not read for, to the jaded ex-SAS convict played by Connery, to the cold, driven, yet honourable "villain" that I still cannot bring myself to dislike in any way. Between those guys and smaller parts played by David Morse and Michael Beihn and bit parts by Tony Todd and John C McGinley...it's a damn near perfect lineup for an action film.
This is the kind of action film that hooks you from the start...comedy (some of the best one-liners ever uttered by Connery), chilling suspense, solid storyline, more 3dimensional, fleshed out "villains", underdog/anti-heroes, kickass over the top car chases, and a great mixture of hand to hand and gunfights...all done very well.
From start to end, this is what an action film should be.
Can't wait to see what Michael Bay does with Miami Vice and Transformers.

Wha? That is really a surprise. I wouldn't have thought that Miami Vice would be a Mann-type property. Well, with him at the helm, it's more or less guaranteed to be worth watching. I'll have to check it out now.

Mann was one of the first executive producers of the series.

and you shit on Phantasm !
yikes

i thought Madagascar was one of the worst animated films i've ever seen ... due largely to the horrific voicework.

i lump this one in with Sharks Tale and chicken little as the 3 worst kids movies ever made..

Elvis_Christ 07-03-2006 06:08 AM

If he can pull it together with the magic of Manhunter and Heat its gonna be gold. Slick intensity is something he's done well throughout his career which started with Miami Vice. The Pilot movie is one of the greatest things to come out of the 80s (like I said "slick" both visually and aurally - great use of music).

I'm not knocking the guy overall at all, it's just one scene, but he almost screwed up Collateral with a crappy music selection. Urge knows what I'm talking about.

urgeok 07-03-2006 07:36 AM

actually - i hated miami vice but i really like what he's done with a few other films (manhunter, Thief, The Keep) and the music was integral to the quality of those films ..

i dont remember the music being abrasive in Collateral ?

I'm referring to the scene where the wolf/coyote runs across the street in front of the cab. I might've went a little overboard with thinking it was about to mess the entire film up, but it was just so tedious and unnecessary, imo anyway.

AUSTIN316426808 07-03-2006 07:53 AM

Coogan's Bluff came on again and I didn't have anything else to do. Finishing up Fist of Fury at the moment.

Watched "The Matador" last night and loved it. Not horror...not a lot of action, but a great character study with an Oscar worthy role for Pierce Brosnan.
