To each his own. It seems are opinions vary a lot, or perhaps I am thinking of another member. Oh well - I usually stray from what others think. Brokeback Mountain, Dead Birds... both thought they were utter shit, while they seem to have a rather popular following.

In other news, got back into Scream (TV channel) again. Load TV Tuner, switch to Scream, and watch some old 70-80's movies while browing the forums. Highway to Hell (92) is on now. :) Horrid backgrounds :p But for some reason... I actually like it.

Dario Argento's Phantom of the Opera (not to be confused with Opera).
I had higher hopes for this one, a couple good kills but other than that it was just "meh". Sorry Dario, you're take; "Fantasma dell'opera, Il", just wasn't that good.

Ghost in the shell 2 Innocence

Damn!! I realy like the first part, a good ci-fi film that talk about at the classic topics of this genere, the repercusions of human cience in our lifes, the lost of humanity in the future etc....

This second part only works on a visual level, shows the best animated tecnics I 've seen by far. But the problem was the story, Oshii wanted to tell a story only with images, so the main plot it's completly secondary. Otherwise all the characters talks like they had studied philosophy at the University, always makin references to the Bible, Confuncio, Sartre....It works sometimes but most of times was shilly (Man two police man talkin' about the meaning of life during the investigation of a murder....).

It's not a bad film but it could be better if Oshii try to tell a story with "real" characters and left in a second plane all the philosophical implications.

6/10

La Fin Absolue de Monde

Brilliant little film. If you haven't gotten a chance to see this indie, hunt it down. Carpenter does a brilliant job directing (one of his lesser known movies) and it almost feels like a tribute to Profondo Rosso. Watch this movie; it'll change your life. 10/10

joshaube 06-17-2006 06:10 AM

By "La Fin Absolue de Monde" do you mean the episode of Masters of Horror entitled "Cigarette Burns"? Or did he direct an actual film as well?

Yeah, the episode. I was drunk and fucking around. The episode "Cigarette Burns" was awesome, though.

Godzilla Vs. Gigan

*Spoilers, though there really isn't much to spoil.*

What can you expect from any of these old Godzilla flicks? This is exactly what you'd think it would be: cheesy, stupid, and actually kind of fun in a so-bad-its-funny way.

Most, if not all, films like this have terrible dubbing. It's a fact of life. However, this movie quite possibly has some of the worst I've ever seen. Most of the lines don't match their facial expressions in the least, and I found it quite hilarious. The actors doing the dubbing were pretty brutal as well, but what would you expect? The plot is beyond cheesy. Turns out some cockroaches from space have destroyed their home planet, and now they want to take over ours. So they summon some space monsters to wipe out Tokyo, only they are soon foiled by Godzilla and Angilas. There is also a group of people trying to figure out what's going on, but nobody really cares about them. I don't think I really need to say anything else about the plot, it speaks for itself.

When it comes down to it, this is an awful movie. The so-bad-its-good factor earns it a few points, but it's pretty bad nonetheless.

Highway To Hell (1992)
I actually enjoyed it. But to be honest, I wasn't soley paying attention to only it. And I didn't watch it start-to-end. Missed the first 15 or so minutes... okay, so I shouldn't even be stating my opinion. Whatever.

Jacob's Ladder tonight.

The Break Up

Good movie with solid performances from the entire cast. Nice script with laughs the whole way through, two scenes in particular had me completely cracking up. Very fun experience, 7.9/10.

AUSTIN316426808 06-18-2006 03:22 AM

I'd have to agree and add that it's probably the worst FILM version of The Phantom of the Opera. I emphasized film because I've seen the play like 10 or 12 times and a couple of those were just awful. I remember once they had a guy playing Christine, still don't have an idea as to what the fuck that was all about.

Some obscure Japanese shit:-

Psycho: The Snuff Reels / Suicide Dolls
Squirmfest 1 & 2

What is it with ugly Japanese women? Little to recommend here amidst the grim optically censored hardcore fucking and subsequent gore, or slurping up of live worms and maggots and subsequent human shit (with said maggots still writhing undigested).

Strange how such extremities can appear so boring, and Oriental copulation so unappealing.

And I'm sceptical about the authenticity of the allegedly 'human turd' that is laid and then swallowed.

*** Identity's rating changes to a 4/5
I suck at rating things, okay? I'd be better off not even using a number or star system.

16 Blocks (3.5/5) (Yet I still do...)
First I'll start my saying Bruce Willis sure picks good scripts. This year he acted in Lucky Number Slevin, a destined cult-hit, and now he comes out with this. Likewise, Mos Def does a great job at playing the witness, I was really suprised by his performance to be honest, considering he hasn't done much outside of television. The characters these two play were very well done, and basically carried the story. Great casting.

Now, as for the movie, there's nothing too fresh here. It's a corrupt-cop story, and we've all seen it before. Like I said - the characters carried it. I was intrigued by the premise - having to escort a witness to a hearing 16 blocks away, but within those 16 blocks lies a whole lot more people who want him dead. But I guess I expected something different then what it actually was. Would make a great over-the-top Kill Bill type scene, wouldn't it? Hehe.

I felt myself getting a little tired near the middle, about one hour or so in, but that may have just been because I'm lying in a dark room in my bed, with tons of pillows. Overall it wasn't too bad, at least I didn't have to take "breaks" from the film like what I did with Return of the Living Dead 4, eugh.

It had some good scenes, such as those in the bus, using newspapers as coverage for the window - smart. Also I oddly enjoyed the time that was spent in that old asian guy's apartment. It was calm, a different sort of feeling then most of the rest of the film.

What made the story, and again ties in with the characters carrying it, was the ending. The big reveal at the courthouse, and the "epilogue" of sorts just before the credits. The first was what it needed - a heart-rush, while the second was uplifting, and made you smile.

Slightly above average movie, but nothing too amazing. It gets a 3.5, because of the great acting and use of characters, as well as the ending. Oh, and some additional extra scenes that were mentioned.

I should re-write my top movies of all-time list. I think my standards might have changed slightly.
