A good horror concept made totally wrong. Read the storyline and tell me you don't think "horror" instantly. Well... it isn't.

It's always a shame when a lot of famous faces doesn't make a movie any better. ::sad::

The Void, 2016, by J. Gillespie S. Kostanski

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....82,268_AL_.jpg

Long story short : I dig it as I love good old body explosion from the 80's (Braindead etc.) combined with a lovecraftian background and small budget that still provides efficient effects most of the time and...I love the animatronics, guys what else could I say ? It's fucking real, you feel like you can touch it and well...it's sticky, gruesome, dark, nothing like an Avengers movie !

Many references that I found even though I'm not such a horror connoisseur but there was definitely something from Carpenter. As for the plot I don't want to say too much, it begins with a mysterious religious group attacking a hospital (somewhat reminded me of the original-the good one- "Assault on Precinct 13") then supernatural events happen.

Yet there are flaws, obviously. Critics said that it lacked the ambition from the films it pays tribute to. Not so sure about this but in two scenes I thought the effects were...lazy. The plot is not perfect, characters may not be developped enough but to be honest I totally don't care : cool story, strange creatures, Lovecraft... it's still the deal.

Two DVD rentals:

Split (2016)
7/10

A guy captures three young ladies.

Written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. As the title may suggest, the lead antagonist has multiple personalities and is played, dare I say a tour de force performance, by James McAvoy (played the young Professor X in Xmen First Class and Future Past). But beyond that, it's simply mildly entertaining and surprisingly cliche. The writing has some depth, but not nearly deep, sharp or emotional enough that we ever care or take much notice. Lot's of old, old ground here.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
8/10

A true story, during WWII an young American Seventh-day Adventist Christian joins the Army to be a combat medic, while also being a conscious objector who will not kill, nor even carry a weapon. His fight begins in basic training and ends in the Battle of Okinawa.

Directed by Mel Gibson, including stars Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving and Sam Worthington, the film was nominated for many awards including Best Picture. The film is well made, and a very interesting true story. The film is packed with vicious Pacific War combat scenes. The script felt a bit simple and the characters largely caricatures of real people, but not to the extent that it was ruining my film immersion.

Netflix offering:

The Dinner (2017)
7/10

Two brothers, one a US congressman (Richard Gere) and their wives meet at a restaurant to discuss what to do about their teen boys who have gotten into some very serious trouble.

I haven't seen this level of character and background exposition in a film perhaps since Ordinary People. It's based on a Dutch novel of the same name, which explains the extensive novel-esque exposition. It has a bit of a The Great Gasbey going on. Has plenty of witty dialogue. For some reason the film leaves an ending issue unresolved. Along with that the ending is a bit unsatisfying.

Well hello stranger! I do have to disagree with the two above choices....

I thought Hacksaw Ridge was an incredible movie and I felt the emotional attachment through the entire show. I thought the cast was an excellent choice, true to their characters. I had to buy it!!

Funny stuff! I always thought if the film makers had the guts to make an 'alternate universe' film, where superman is a very strange, arrogant, cultish godlike thing (like he was in one of batman's dreams), and batman was just trying to save mankind from his rule... this might have been a great film. I mean heck, they could have even made this not the real superman. Instead, after all the prior superman films, this film was overly tread material again.

But of course, this was just a forerunner film for The Justice League film.

Don't Knock Twice -

I thought this was going to be good. I think I saw a trailer or just a poster some time ago. Perhaps I thought since Katee Sackhoff is in it, it would be good. But she's 0 for 2 for me with horror movies now. Maybe 0 for 3 with that Halloween movie but I haven't seen that yet. Don't Knock Twice starts off ok too. But then goes to some crazy places. And without spoiling it, the movie is a tease. It is like it knows it's a bad movie so it plays with obvious misdirection in the hopes that you will forget. A better movie wouldn't do something like that. It wouldn't continually show something to try to make you forget something else so that when the reveal happens at the end it's a surprise and shock. In Don't Knock Twice, I didn't care that much because of that poor attempt at misdirection and the stupid ending. It's a shame too because the setup and a few of the locations are good horror settings. And about 1/4 to close to halfway in, I was thinking this is going to be a movie I'll own. But nope.

Autopsy of Jane Doe -

I heard the name of this movie before but I guess I didn't think it would be a horror movie or at least a good horror movie. But I think someone here recommended it so I checked it out. And it's a good one. Like many good movies it's best to see this one blank and let the mystery unfold. It's an unsettling movie because the whole thing is set in the basement morgue of this cozy old country house. And even though we've seen autopsies in movies before, I don't think we've seen whole movies around autopsies. The only one I can remember right now is the doctor movie with Lola from Run Lola Run. She's cool and I might try and find that one again as I barely remember it. But if you haven't seen The Autopsy of Jane Doe check it out and don't spoil it for yourself. The movie is short and the reveal will be surprising. At least it was for me.

They don't have the guts to do that in a multi million dollar movie. I think they did do that with the recent Superman and some of the DC characters though. Of course it probably wasn't planned, even though they will say it was, but that whole New 52 thing didn't go as well as they wanted it to.

With JL, WB have started to think little more 'wisely', I guess. Cause as a movie, it's got plenty of flaws, poor editing, bad cgi, very weak plot structure and a poorly done villain with one dimensional character who was so weak that even though they used such tagline as "YOU CAN'T SAVE THE WORLD ALONE" but literary in the movie he was so douchebag of a villain that even Superman alone could have beat him single handedly within a minute if he wanted to or got the chance. Despite having several issues or problems like that the movie still somehow turned out as a fun & entertaining watch as they clearly decided to treat it lightly by kicking out Snyder for good and assigned Whedon to turned it at least a barely enjoyable ride for the moviegoers. Though not even close to WW's shadow but at least an improvement over stupid ass earlier films like BvS, Suicide Squad and that chaotic mess of MOS.

Little minor spoilers for JL that I'm sure won't ruin your fun while you'll going to see JL:

Snyder's 2 consecutive movies got this strange obsession for 'mother'...in BvS, Batsy stopped killing Sup when he came to know both of their mother's name is same & Sup's mother is in danger, asking for his help (as he almost beat the crap out of him) and in JL, Steppenwolf was running after the mother boxes crying out "Oh Mother! Oh Mother!" throughout the movie ::big grin::

Haven't read Christie's original novel yet ::embarrassment::, so can't tell how well they have adapted it here but found it pretty entertaining with great production value and great cast including Christina Hendricks, Gillian Anderson (couldn't recognize her first!), Glenn Close, Terence Stamp and Julian Sands. May be because it wasn't one of her popular Hercule Poirot or Miss Marple stories, there wasn't much charm of solving the mystery with clue by clue. Still it was enjoyable as it also offered one of her signature & most engaging mystery format...a gorgeous mansion of a wealthy Britt family and the house full of suspicious characters who each may got his/her own motive for the murder(s) and yes, of course, with a nice surprise at the final revelation; particularly this story came with a real shocker! Loved it!

Loving Vincent (2017)

https://s26.postimg.org/wkyc2o5l5/image.jpg

Focusing the last days of Vincent Van Gogh & his life briefly, LOVING VINCENT (2017) is a visually striking film that actually looked like a continuous series of live oil paintings of VVG that somehow came to life with words! This tremendous achievement for live action animation genre surely is a treat to watch not only for the fans of the Father of modern art but also whoever is fond of different sort of animated films & art. Purely influenced by the works that Van Gogh had painted & using his same painting technique, each of the frame of the film (in total 65K!) is actually an oil painting on canvas, created by a team of more than 100 painters (source: The Making of Loving Vincent video & wiki)! The film also heavily revolves around the mystery surrounding the suicidal death of this troubled genius and that gave it kind of a feel of a mystery movie also. Not in a first person perspective, rather as point of view from the others who were somewhat close to him or observed him more or less closely, the film tries to captures the tragic life of a bullied & struggling Vincent, considered a madman and a failure, had a very unpleasant relationship with fame & fate during his lifetime as they never collided till long after his death.
But the way the basic narrative was set in the film, it won't be as much compelling as a movie if they made it only as a live action film without this unique style of animation. So Vincent's own style of art, contributed by more than hundred of modern classical-painters saved this film and made it something special.
And last but not the least, a film about Vincent Vang Gogh would never be complete without Don McLean's one of the most moving & best songs ever...Vincent (Starry Starry Night). Though they should have used the original version but glad at least they added a cover version of it at the end credits.

BAIT (2012)
Just watched this with my bf. The CGI was so bad I thought for sure this was another of SyFy's crap films, but the further in we went the more we found ourselves enjoying it. The story was good and suspenseful, characters somewhat connectable, setting was fantastic, and the BODIES. The effects on the corpses were phenomenal! One in particular was so grotesque that it puts the floater in Jaws to shame. I swear they put so much time and effort into them they completely forgot they had sharks to put into the film and that's why the beginning shows so much horrid CGI. I recommend watching if you want something cheesy, but enjoyable cheese. And I will comfort the animal lovers that the dog DOES survive. Just hang in there. It's a great ride. ::smile::

A ridiculous thriller about one of the dumbest schemes anyone ever thought for a movie and the fun part is it took all of that way more too seriously that it should have. Only a comedy treatment could justify the plan's absurdity.

Justice League (2017)
7/10

Much better than some of the reviews I heard. I thought it was fun. For the most part the action tends to have purpose, and they move it along. It has humor without lingering on it. The story and villain are very routine, but it's not insufferable. The pace is better than Thor-Ragnarok, where most the action was boring. I hate that they display Flash moving as just lighting... much prefer the red blur, like in the comics.

Cube (1997) -- on Netflix --
7/10

"Six complete strangers of widely varying personality characteristics are involuntarily placed in an endless maze containing deadly traps."

Actor Maurice Dean Wint, as Quintin/Police Officer, does such an excellent engrossing job that it really kick-starts the film. It's interesting and well paced. The story and characters run out of gas after the first hour though... either the characters, or the Cube setting, needed to become more complex for the 90 minute runtime. But being a little uncomfortable with the circumstances and characters seems rather fitting to the plot.
