Lugosi is amazing in that film.

Now that Criterion has released an incredible version of this on DVD and Blu-ray, everyone should go out and grab it. I hadn't seen this in ages, and the last time was off a crappy VHS. Truly one of the best and most startling horror films of the 30s, with some incredible make-up and a truly disturbing message. Laughton's performance is chilling and unhinged; really, the whole film is that way. Obviously, highly recommended.

Caltiki The Undying Monster (1959)-Italian creature feature based on a mexican myth about the Mayan Goddess Caltiki. Excellent suspenseful first half then builds to a flamethrowing carnage finale.

I expect this caused a storm 50 years ago. But today it seems tame.

Still a good movie though. 6/10. :)

I guess it depends how you define tame. If you mean there is no stomach churning gore - yes you're right.

But it's still a very scary portrayal of a psychopath who specialises in despatching prostitutes in the most sadistic and violent manor.

Weirdly I know a lot of non-horror fans that love it. Adore it myself regardless. So sad that it was so controversial at the time it practically destroyed the director's career.

The Blood Beast Terror from 1968.

I know it's loathed by some but I still give it 6/10. It's creaky, it's old and it has Peter Cushing. ;)

"Fantastic Voyage" (1966)

Scientist Jan Benes, who knows the secret to keeping soldiers shrunken for an indefinite period, escapes from behind the Iron Curtain with the help of CIA agent Grant. While being transferred, their motorcade is attacked. Benes strikes his head, causing a blood clot to form in his brain. Grant is ordered to accompany a group of scientists as they are miniaturized. The crew has one hour to get in Benes's brain, remove the clot and get out.

Phantom's Review: Slow moving, but highly entertaining sci-fi adventure. Interesting story, good acting and Oscar winning special FX, and , of course....Raquel Welch, the most gorgeous woman in movie history. A really good movie.

The Gorgon (1964) rewatched this hammer film and actually enjoyed it even more this time round (thank you V!) I also love that it gives a different gorgon sister airtime instead of medusa (I love all three regardless) for a change.
