The Last Exorcism
Silent Hill Revelations |
They lost me at Russell Crowe's introduction as Doctor you-know-who (poor R L Stevenson must be turning in his grave, moaning at each reel of this monstrosity). Everything else after that went just one way - downhill. And don't even get me started on that ridiculous climax! Not sure why Cruise and Crowe did this. Maybe they have gone bankrupt and needed the money desperately. Pointless. Avoid unless otherwise. * ½ |

I still can't figure out why the mummy has two pupils in each eye... is that an Egyptian thing I'm unfamiliar with? Speaking of these shit remakes, I watched Dracula Untold over hiatus. I should probably give my 2 cents on it: ...It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I still gave my copy to my sister because Dracula was a pussy. |

Okja (2017)
https://s13.postimg.org/h5r3y8vpz/Okja.jpg Another Bong Joon Ho masterpiece! The director who gave us some exceptionally good & quality films in past 15 years i.e. Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), Mother (2009) and Snowpiercer (2013). This is a brave take on animal abuse with a little doze of corporate satire through a moving adventure tale from start to finish. Found this absolutely beautiful and quite heart breaking at times. Highly recommended. >>: A |
TROY (2004). Pretty good costume drama with lots of action, good CGI and decent turns. ***1/2

Event Horizon -
I rewatched this movie. I don't think I saw Hellraiser before I saw this originally. But now I see all of the influences. It's a strange mix that's both fun at times and dark. Quote:

Zygote (Oats Studios Volume 1)
B+ Another Blomkamp short, this time inspired by The Thing. That creature... Daaaamn! I'm amazed what they're able to pull off with limited resources. Quote:

Contratiempo aka The Invisible Guest (2016)
https://s21.postimg.org/kzwsyds87/Contrart.jpg The writer of Julia's Eyes (2010), Oriol Paulo's 2nd feature film after 2012's awesome Spanish thriller The Body. Though not as great as his earlier works & you may get the 'twist' halfway through but still this is a pretty well-crafted, intense 'who or how-done-it' style another good Spanish thriller. Recommended. >>: B+ |

ANDRE (1994). After seeing the statue in Rockport Maine last month, decided to revisit the film after not seeing in some time. A seal is adopted by Keith Carradine and his family and the film details how Andre became a celebrity around the area (early 1960's). Lots of good vintage props like cars, TVs, music etc. While the film is geared towards children (and it seems a couple of gags are overused), adults should like it as well. Entertaining, funny and, if I may say so, charming little film. ***1/2

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
https://s1.postimg.org/5na78xjkf/War_Apes.jpg Excellent motion-capture + CGI animation once again worked remarkably for Andy Serkis to deliver another amazing performance as Caesar and that's one of the main reasons for this 3rd & Best installment in the reboot-trilogy to made it a heart-warming experience at the theater. A very human tale about the survival of the Apes and fall of the humans...quite deep & moving at times. Highly recommended. The 2nd best film of the year after Logan. >>: A |

ED WOOD (1994). The best film Tim Burton/Johnny Depp made and considering the subject, it's almost appropriate it didn't do big box office. Lots of good performances throughout, but the late Martin Landau (just a couple of days ago too::sad::) is simply wonderful as a delicate, wounded still proud Bela Lugosi, richly deserving the Oscar, even if the film isn't entirely factual. ****1/2

Wish Upon (2017)
Terrible writing and terrible PG-13 editing. Joey King tried as hard as she could to salvage the movie, and she gives a pretty good performance. Almost all the kills are lifted directly from the Final Destination movies, but the deaths are so bloodless that they don't have the surprise of the movies they're ripping off. For some reason, I can't completely hate this movie, though. It's got some camp value at least. I've heard the director has an unrated version for the DVD release that's much bloodier, and honestly, I might take the time to watch that version. 4/10 |

Btw, check out Another Evil if you want to see a somewhat original ghost/haunted house type movie. If you're still into those. Got a feeling you might like it. |

Some films rely solely on atmosphere, and this is one of those. You keep having the nervy, edgy feeling that something is very wrong throughout the first 40-odd minutes, but what follows is something far more sinister and dark. Even though you feel you saw the twist coming, it's still quite a WTF?! moment - followed by a few more. Do give this one a spin, if you haven't already. * * * ½ |
