The Flayed One 05-17-2006 02:13 PM

I just watched 40 Year Old Virgin last night. I avoided it for quite some time, but I like Steve Carell too much. You know what? It was pretty funny. Steve definately made the movie.

alkytrio666 05-17-2006 02:17 PM

It's funny, I thought it was dumb.

And I don't like Steve Carell. I find him obnoxious and annoying and not at all funny. (Except in Anchorman.)

But then again, I'm a comedy snob to the max. The only truly great comedy movies, in my opinion, that have come out within the last 10 years, are Swingers, Made, and Office Space.

The movie got stale pretty quick, but I thought Carell was amazing in Bruce Almighty. His newsdesk scene with Bruce controlling him is the only part of that movie that still makes me laugh,

I thought the Toolbox Murders remake was cool. Seems that I like a bunch of shit you guys don't most of the time :)

I just watched City Of God. This movie is fuckin' brilliant. Its been awhile since a 2 hour movie has kept me captivated. Shame I missed out on this one on the big screen because the cinematography was amazing and seeing it at the cinema would've done it more justice. Anyone else watched this one? It had a bunch of hype a couple of years back.

I enjoyed it, too, for what it was. An entertaining little low-budger. I enjoyed it.

The Frigteners (1996)- (7.5/10)

Not much to say. Return suggested this, I rented it, I thoroughly enjoyed it, I'd watch it again. Some of the acting was over-the-top, but I thought Fox actually did a pretty good job, and Dee Wallace, too.

Very entertaining, good way to spend a Wednesday evening. Thanks, Return.

Peter Jackson's best flick apart from Heavenly Creatures.

I caught the last 10 minutes or so of The Cookout a couple nights ago...didnt seem too bad, what I saw was mildly amusing.

The Producers Remake is the movie version of the musical done by Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderkick no? Is it as good as the original? I've been looking at this but with Uma and Will Feral l it just seems so overblown....

Swingers is one of my favorite movies, and I haven't seen Office Space, but I bought Made because it had Vince and Jon in it. Jon also directed it. God, it was one of my worst purchases ever. I really didn't like the movie at all.

There's an Evan Almighty filming right now. I've read it's gonna have something to do with the ark story.

What!?!?!? How can you like Swingers but not Made? I don't get it. They were both written and directed aqnd starring the same people. IMO, Vince Vaughn's performance in made is 10 times funnier than he is in Swingers!

"So where's the Red Dragon's lair?"

Office Space rules.

Those 3 are all great, but you are forgetting about the best comedy to come out in the past 10 years.... The Big Lebowski.

bwind22 05-18-2006 02:56 AM

The Ringer

Well, this was pretty stupid and distasteful, but it did have a few funny moments. I think they tried to disguise the distastefulness of it by having Johnny Knoxville at first want nothing to do with the plan and then by having him act like a bigger goon than just about anyone else in the movie but it still comes off as cruel. I don't know... It was about what I expected, which wasn't all that much.

Agreed, none of the extended versions are very good. Well, I guess I shouldnt say all because I havent seen either version of Resurrection...but for the first 3, the theatrical cuts are way better. Especially #3, the extended cut was much too long.

The_Return 05-18-2006 03:36 PM

EDIT - Accidental double post, sorry.

AnnieMiller 05-18-2006 03:50 PM

Finally managed to get a copy of the Ninth Gate and it was every bit as good as I remembered.

Also watched Sin City - jury is still out on this one - great plot but less is more know what I mean - it just had the feel of being a bit overcooked.

Talking about being overcooked - Mr and Mrs Smith - I couldn't help it as much as I like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie this just didn't work for me. It was so predictable and dare I say it boring

And last but by no means least Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy - laugh out loud funny - I really liked it:

As you can tell had a bit of a DVD fest today!

Then check out the original by Hitchcock. That's the film that should be so popular, not this remake. In fact, I bet you didn't even know that it was a remake...

Sick_As_Fuck 05-18-2006 07:52 PM

Stealth

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Pretty much non-stop action from the very beginning. I'd give it a solid 3/5 rating.

The STE 05-18-2006 09:24 PM

Brokeback Mountain:
Now that I've seen it, I can say legitimately that it wasn't anywhere near best movie of the year (it actually wasn't even as good as I thought it'd be)
3/5

You're saying that about Carell or Baxter?

Sorry I already own the original Mr and Mrs Smith and to my mind the so called remake has nothing on Hitchcock's Mr and Mrs Smith - ok perhaps the marriage counselling has a similarity in that they each are attempting to be truthful but apart from the film title that for me is as far as it goes.

Baxter...we definatly have proof that Carell can carry a movie, but that character just seemed pretty flat. It would be like giving his character from Anchorman his own movie, I just dont think it would work.

I really liked Mr. and Mrs. Smith, this little subtle things when they're trying to out each other. Fun movie with a lot of humor that was very over the top. I've seen it with a few people who really enjoyed it but it isn't for everyone. Odd too because I think Pitt's ok and Jolie is one of the most over-rated actresses ever. Maybe I expected less. Oh, the movie wasn't a remake of the Hitchcock film with the same title but loosely based on a television show starring Scott Bakula and Maria Bello.

I just watched a couple great movies to help relax me before Saturday...

Maltese Falcon and Dr. Frankenstein Must be Destroyed

Great films, both classics, I hadn't had the opportunity to see either of these before so needless to say they were a real treat. Peter Cushing is excellent as the mad doctor.

I found it to be like the Usual Suspects, I needed to watch it again to check the progression followed to the conclusion they gave us.

One of those annoying compulsions that strike every now and again. :)

Going to see MI3 with my girlfriend tonight, I hope it satisfies my violent action craving i've had for a while.

^By the way I know there's a couple sick jokes you can make about me, my GF, and violent action with what I said, get over it.
