Anyway, back on topic. The first movie Ive watched in a week: House of the Dead, AKA Alien Zone [1978] What an unfortunately titled film. If it goes by House of the Dead, it inescapably gets mistaken for Uwe Boll's quote-unquote "masterpiece", and if it goes by Alien Zone it's doomed to deceive audiences into disappointment. Looking past the title however, this isn't a bad film. Though as far as I'm concerned Creepshow is and always will be the be-all-and-end-all horror anthologies, this is still a nice effort. The wrap-around story is pretty weak, though the way the stories are presented is pretty cool. Ivor Francis plays a rather creepy mortician telling the macabre stories of his "aquisitions" to a man who just had a bit of extra-marital fun. The first story is pretty weak, about a mean spirited teacher who gets whats coming to her. The main actress is awful, the attempt at special effects is just as bad, and the story isn't all that strong to begin with. It picks up some with the second story, which concerns a man who lures women to his apartment and films himself killing them. The main actor is pretty over-the-top, but he makes for a pretty good lunatic. Unfortunately his victims leave a lot to be desired. The story isn't very original, but it was still interesting. Story #3 is easily the best of the lot. It's about the world's two greatest detectives teaming up on a case...or are they? The acting in this one is surprisingly good, the American detective reminded me of a cross between Al Pacino and a teacher at my school. The story was great, the ending, though obvious, was fitting....overall this was a great story. The fourth and final story was pretty good too, though not as good as it's predecessor. It revolves around a miserable man who gets himself trapped in a building and tormented endlessly by an unseen force. The actor was decent, the plot was good and it ended well. The closing of the wrap-around story wasn't very good...very predictable and a huge letdown after seeing two pretty good stories. Overall, this anthology is definitely worth watching. The low budget shows, but it's entertaining and has at least a couple really good stories. It does have it's flaws though, such as terrible acting and a very weak first story, so I cant rate it too high. I recommend seeing it for yourself. 6/10 |
Crash 8.5/10 - Excellent cast and terrific movie
Matchpoint 7.5/10 - Good movie, but didn't like the ending. Scarlett Johannson is one hot girl though |
The Fly 2
This was better than I was expecting with some excellent cheesy gore. I was pretty entertained throughout and the storyline flowed pretty well with the original. All in all it was better than I was expecting it to be, but see the original before you see this one. B- A History of Violence I didn't know anything about this before I got it except that it was Cronenberg. There was some good gore but more or less it was just a pretty cool crime film. Well acted and directed. No complaints. Good movie. B+ |
Bruiser (Romero)
pretty good movie - i enjoyed it. cant believe this was the same man who made mortuary. |
Hard Candy

silent hill. i'm a bit disappointed as i expected to be. seeing pyramid head on screen was awesome though. gans sticked to the whole look and feel of the game, but it wasn't scary nor nerve racking at all.
***SPOILERS*** what pissed me off though, was the whole bad guy having the face of the little girl. ANOTHER little girl... with the long, black, dirty hair in her face. as if we hadn't seen enough of the grudge, and the ring, etc... scary little girls is so passé. ugh. really annoyed me. here's hoping gans can do better with SH2. |
Oasis of the Zombies
This movie takes a pretty basic zombie premise that should take about 30 min, drags it out to an hour and a half, fills it with really bad dialogue and even worse actors, then tries to redeem itself at the end with non-stop zombies for about 10 minutes. This is the 1st Jesus Franco film I've seen, and if this is any indication of the quality of his body of work, it could easily be my last. The story is somewhat interesting, basically about a treasure lost in a desert oasis that is guarded by Nazi zombies. Not a very interesting or original plot, but it's the best part of this movie. Too bad it's so poorly paced, it might have held my interest if it was an hour shorter. The actors are even worse than you can usually expect from this kind of movie, the editing seems like it was done in 10 minutes by a five year old, and the writing is absolutely abysmal. The score seems like it's pieced together from at least 3 other movies; at times it fits the action well, but at others it sounds like a bad soap opera. Really, most of us that would watch a movie like this don't really care about those things: All we want out of a movie like this is gory zombie mayhem. Up until the ending there is none what-so-ever, and even once we to that point the action is very disappointing. Almost no gore to speak of, and most of the zombies just look like kids with sand on their faces. There was one shot near the end, however, that I really like. We see the darkened silhouettes of 3 zombies wandering over a mound of sand against a blood-red sky....the one good shot in the whole movie. Put simply, Id avoid this one. Not even laughably bad, just slow, boring and dumb. 3/10 |

There's Something About Mary- 4.5/5
This is another one of my "belated" movies. To be more specific, this is a movie that pretty much everybody has seen, but I haven't. Until now (obviously). And I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. Usually, these hyped movies can disappoint my movie needs, but MAry didn't. Well, except for the long wait to finally see Ted encounter Mary after his prom night mishap 13 years earlier. Aside from that, the movie was very funny and fulfilling. It had a star-studded cast (including Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon, Chris Elliot, Jeffrey Tambyor, etc.). Sure, some of this stars weren't as popular as they are today *cough* Diaz and Stiller *cough*. Overall, There's Something About Mary was a very funny and entertaing movie from The Farrely Brothers. |
Making my list in the Best Action Movie thread put this in my head...
The Shooting [1967] This right here is a painfully overlooked western that, in my opinion, should be mentioned right along with classic westerns like Once Upon a Time in The West or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Though perhaps not quite as good as those films, it's an under-appreciated classic nonetheless. The actors are all very good, especially a very young Jack Nicholson playing his trademark lunatic years before it was his trademark. Though his character has a fairly small role and doesn't show up until over half way through the movie, he is easily the best character involved. The rest of the actors are good as well, and Millie Perkins is one heck of a beautiful woman. The plot, which I wont ruin for you, is very well written and delivers a completely unexpected twist at the very end. The only complaint that I can think of about this film is the pacing. There are moments when it drags pretty badly, but aside from that it's a truly great film that deserves more recognition. 8.5/10 |
I just watched through Mortuary and 2001 Maniacs. Both were good for a laugh as long as you don't think to hard about them. 2001 is the superior of the two and worth a rent.

"There's something >more< about Mary", It's the same film, but comes with about half an hour extra footage, a whole storyline that wasn't even touched on, and a few good jokes. All of these are actually incorporated into the film, a feature I think should be available on all dvds. Good value all the way... |

Last House on Dead End Street
Didn't really like this one, probably because I had built up my expectations for a surreal, exploitation masterpiece and got a simple little film that really didn't move me. I wouldn't consider it a complete waste of time but I don't think I'd watch it again. |
The Murder Mansion
Thsi movie was pretty damn terrible from start to finish. Bad overdubbing, crappy effects, no gore at all... Basically a group of people gets caught in heavy fog, gets stuck spending teh night in a nearby mansion only to find it's a vampire's lair. Sounds alright, right? Well, it started off with some promise but quickly descended in to a Scooby Doo type mysetery where the "vampires" turned out to be people in costumes and the heros solve the mystery. Very corny and utterly unenjoyable. D- (But it was very borderline F.) |
