Volume 9 of DARK SHADOWS THE THREE STOOGES. Watched the first volume and a lot of their material has not held up, but the stuff that works is still funny as hell. Of course, for me, it's GOT to be Curly! |
Room 104 Episode 1
I think this is a fairly good episode. It kind of felt a bit like filmed theater in parts. And not quite as dark or unsettling as an episode of Twilight Zone. One of my favorite episodes of Twilight Zone is the one with the lady at the bus stop. That's unsettling. Room 104 isn't quite there. They try to play the twist but not keep the ending. Which I thought was kind of a cop out even if you explain it on the Room. Still I'll watch more of these episodes probably in October to see what other stories happen in this room. Room 104 Episode 2 I cheated and watched another. I didn't really like this one as it wasn't like a spooky Twilight Zone type episode. In fact, I was kind of disappointed in the subject matter. I'm sad to admit that I've seen some messed up stuff on the Internet. One of those being those dirty Pizza delivery guy videos. And the way this was setup early on, all I could think was they are making a story out of those crude videos. At one point, it seemed to add a bit of a Tarantino Reservoir Dogs moment. But then back to the pizza nonsense. I wasn't surprised by the twist when it happened. This episode seemed better suited to one of those softcore shows that come on Cinemax. |

Channel Zero No End House Episode 1 -
During the opening I forgot this was called Channel Zero and thought we are going to get yet another mysterious TV channel show. And then the setup was slow with the usual teenage stuff. But it gets better and turns into an awesome start for the first episode. I had a feeling where it was going as I couldn't imagine that they would continue with the setup for the whole season. And it has the potential to be really good. By the way, I would have been out of there at the first room. Also I checked the wiki and two more seasons of Channel Zero are coming after this one. |

Star Trek: Discovery Ep 1 & 2.
Well, they're definitely on top of production quality, I'll say that first and foremost. It hasn't really been revealed if this show takes place in the original or "new" reality, or if it's just essentially fitting in with (or ignoring?) both. Style-wise it looks much more like the JJA universe - but that's just skin deep stuff. What I found interesting was... We have a main character. I've seen TNG, a fair bit of TOS, all of Voyager and DS9 and there's never really been so much of a focus on just one person, it's always been more ensemble. Maybe it'll lean into that with the changes episode 2 brought about? It's not a bad thing. Just different. She's a little bit of a mixture between what ST usually tries to do with their "fish out of water" characters like Spock, Data, Odo etc, and some of their less "by the book" characters, a trait most strongly recognisable as Kirk-ish. Another thing there hasn't been too much of, is the early Klingon psychology...in this show, while you see that they are proud, strong, almost religious in their conviction to battle and victory (these parts we know)...you also see that for reasons unknown thus far, they're very fractured, and they really do see the "federation" as a threat to their very way of life and culture. There's been glimpses of the Klingon way of life before, largely via Worf...but nothing from within the original series or anyplace near that timeline. The first speech from the Klingon antagonist says it all...he was in no way trying to mince words, gain support among his people through misinformation or anything along those lines - He absolutely believed his very people, their lives and reality were under serious threat. This is the first time there was almost as much focus on the "other side" as there was the Federation. I actually hope they keep this up as they encounter other species. More writing involved I suppose, but yeah, adds a dimension we've only really seen a very small measure of before. So. Without being too nitpicky, I found it enjoyable. I don't feel as though you need to be a Trekkie, or have even seen anything ST before to jump on at this point, after all, it stands on its own and is set chronologically prior to most of what we've seen before. Good music. Nice effects. Cool ships. GREAT to hear the sound effects of the computer/s etc from the original series incorporated, and of course the oldskool inspired phaser and ?tricorder? designs were a treat too. I'll follow this with interest. If you're more after the TNG era type ST, I'd recommend maybe checking out "The Orville", a good show in it's own right, thankfully not as laugh a minute as Seth Mcfarlanes other stuff...it's quite a respectful send up actually. |

Channel Zero No End House Episode 2 -
This episode is more like Twilight Zone now and still good. It's like that episode I mentioned in a recent post for another tv show without spoiling it. I like the one girl saying we should be terrified. So many times in horror movies and shows when crazy things are happening we don't get characters actually saying that when they realize that there is something really wrong no matter if on the surface things seem fine. And with the end reveal scenes we see there is something very dangerous about this world. |
Salem. quite liked it. Loved the ending. Enjoyed the evolution of Anne Hale.

On vacation and lots of TV watching;
DEXTER Seasons 1 & 2 NIGHT GALLERY ALIAS Season 1 THE WINDS OF WAR OJ:MADE IN AMERICA. Really good ESPN doc on OJ Simpson, from humble beginnings to glory and all crashing down. He truly did have it all. THE VIETNAM WAR. Absolutely superb sobering documentary of this period. Another winner by Ken Burns and company. |
"Stranger Things" season 2
I really want to like this series, but the story is just way too slow going. Had the same problem with season 1 except this time the story is just weaker. In my opinion the whole thing would've worked better as a series such as Eerie Indiana, with something new & strange happening each episode. In the case of Stranger Things not a whole lot happens in each episode. Shame... |
