Swamp Women

Six years before directing his masterpiece, Pit and the Pendulm, Roger Corman made his directorial debut with a decent little crime flick called Swamp Women. It's about a group of women who break out of jail to search for their hidden diamonds, though the woman that broke them out is an undercover cop. The acting varies, at times they're pretty good and others not so much. They did make you care to some extent about the characters; I know at the very least I didn't want them to get caught. The story was interesting enough, but the ending was really disappointing. The frequent catfights were pretty funny, I must admit. All in all, this is pretty good for what it is.

Miner's Massacre- 2/5

This one has been collecting dust in my horror movie collection for awhile now. I felt it was the right time to bring it out of it's shell. Well, that wasn't such a smart choice. It wasn't totally bad, and did have some blood and guts to spare, but the acting was bad. And I mean bad as in worse than most direct-to-video movies. It wasn't a total waste of $5.00, but still wasn't worth it. My movie slump continues. Damn!

The Bird With The crystal Plumage:

Quite a good little film, one of Argento's earlier films and you can tell. No strong coloured lights, no over the top fancy camera work and one of the most straight forward plots.
No particular blood and absolutly no gore but I would still recommend this anyone, if not just to laugh at MR "So long"

I can bet you that there'll still be a few copies left. If not, then all I have to say is "HOLY SHIT!!!".

Ernest in the Army- 0.5/5

I knew this one wasn't going to pull me out of my slump, but I gave it a shot anyway. And boy was I right! Remember a while back when I wrote my mini-review for Ernest Goes to School? If so, then you remember me saying that Ernest Goes to School was one of the last good Ernest movies. Well, sadly, I wasn't lying. I think my whole problem with this movie was that it was set in the army. This is not a place to put Ernest in. There were no laughs whatsoever and the film felt too serious at times. At least they didn't go down to this path: Ernest in Space. And so continues my movie slump. Ugh...

The World Gone Mad

Not really sure what to say about this one, aside from I didn't like it much. The actors were all fine, there were a few laughs here and there. The ending wasn't too bad, but I suppose after the mess of a plot that came before it, that's not a huge feat. Half the time you have no idea what's going on, and by the time you might have a clue, you don't care anymore. This plods along at a pace most snails would be ashamed of, and I found myself fighting to stay awake the whole time. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind a slow-paced movie, so long as it keeps your attention. This doesn't. Overall, is this a good movie? No, not really. Could it cure insomnia? I wouldn't be surprised.

Doomed to Die

As far as mystery B-movies go, you cant go "Wong" with this one. Karloff returns once again as the famous Chinese detective James Lee Wong to solve the murder of a shipping tycoon. What seems like an open and shut case to Capt. Street (Grant Withers) quickly becomes a web of deceit, lies and murder! I've only seen two Wong films, this and "The Fatal Hour", but I really enjoyed them both, largely due to Capt. Street and his "sidekick" reporter Bobbie Logan. The banter between them is cliché, but often pretty funny anyway. They have great chemistry together on screen. Karloff is, of course, great as Wong. I loved his entrances from the most unlikely places, such as windows or fire escapes. The plot was pretty straight forward, though it was full of red-herrings and false suspects that made the conclusion a bit hard to guess. Not that that's a bad thing mind you, I quite enjoyed the ending. To sum up, I recommend this as well as the slightly better "Fatal Hour" as two of the best mystery B-movies you'll find out there.

The Amazing Mr. X

What a cool movie. So much more than your typical B horror flick, loved every second of this one. The plot would be very easily spoiled, so I wont go into that, suffice to say it's very interesting and well-done. On top of that, the ending is great. Turhan Bey was great in the lead role, I'm definitely going to track down some more of his films. He commands the screen, makes each scene his own. Great presence, put simply. The rest of the cast is good enough as well, though they pale by comparison to Mr. Bey. The score is beautifully haunting, and sets the scene perfectly throughout the film. I highly recommend this movie.

Wolf Creek- 0.5/5

God damnit! This was going to be my saving grace! But no, it's yet another shitfest for my movie slump! There wasn't much gore and I don't see how this felt like "real horror". It felt like a real horror watching it, as my hands slowly gripped my neck, just trying to choke myself so the pain would go away. But, that's about it. And so continues my movie slump. Fuck!

BTW- Return, I'll probably watch something like Die Hard or something good like that later. But, I'm not going to count it against this mvoie slump. This slump is only for movies that I'm seeing for the first time (or checking out twice because I didn't like it the first time but feel it deserves a second chance).

Abominus 04-17-2006 07:01 PM

I just finished watching Return of the Living Dead:Necropolis. I actually really enjoyed...the blood effects. The movie was a terrible excersise in amateurish film making.

The actors were hysterically awful, there was no conflict resolution. The main(ish) character just gets crapped on constantly and overacts his little heart out.

Blood was great, movie sucked.

Now I have to burn my eyeballs.

Actually, I've had a pretty good day as far as movies are concerned. Although overall I am off to a lethargic start today.

Yeah, so it seems.:p

But there´s nothing wrong with slow days as long as there´s something relaxing to do, such as movies, computer, masturbating, reading etc. That´s all good, maaaan.:)

Say what? The plot was pretty typical, but I thought the gore, or violence rather, was top notch. Did you see the unrated version? That one chick gets worked from her hand to head on a stick. I thought that was pretty brutal. Havent seen Hills remake yet...

cheebacheeba 04-18-2006 11:45 AM

Just watched "The Island".
The two leads piss me off...but other than that, I thought it was ok...clearly combined elements of a lot of other films (Logans run in particular springs to mind), but I thought it was ok, at least not half as bad as certain reviewers would have us believe.
