I find the concept of this series pretty interesting, so Im trying to watch them in order. It's my own opinion if I think this one sucked. Sure, maybe it's better than some later films in the series, I wouldnt know, but that doesnt change the fact that I didnt think it was very good. |

This would be considred by many as a TV show, however I did not see it on TV, so I consider it more of a short film.
Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns John Carpenter has still got it. This was a very creepy, atmospheric short film that I enjoyed alot. For the most part the actrs are great, however the leading man left alot to be desired. Reminded me a bit of Mark LaCour from Dark Heritage, and incase you might not be familiar with that film, thats far from a compliment. Otherwise the cast was great, I especially like Udo Kier, he added an almost comic sence of malice to his scenes. The "Willowy Being" as it was credited was also very good. The gore and effects were phenominal; the back of the aforementioned "Willowy Being" looked great, as did the rest of the gore in this surprisingly violent film. I wont spoil the plot, but I thought it was very interesting, and moved at a nice pace. The hour long time-slot definatly worked to it's advantage. Had a very good ending as well, and thankfully left a few questions unanswered. Lastly, Im very glad Carpenter didn't show us very much of "La Fin Absolue Du Monde", I think showing it would have severly detracteed from the film. Overall, I highly recomend this. 8.5/10 |

SPOILERS AHEAD !!!! you know, since the guy basically has nothing left to live for anymore... his girl killed herself and he feels guilty about it, he has a very large debt, is about to lose his job... he's really at rock bottom. i thought he acted out perfectly the person who, deep down, hardly feels anymore. is kind of numb. or maybe i'll just have to watch it again. :) back on topic : fever pitch. |

As said before, to me these are more short film than they are TV episodes...
Masters of Horror: Dreams in the Witch House Though I have to hope Lovecraft has some better stories out there, Stuart Gordon did a great job adapting this one. Though it certainly pales in comparison to Re-Animator or Dagon, his knack for capturing Lovecraft's style of "cosmic horror" shines once again. Ezra Godden, star of Gordons's Dagon, returns as yet another ill-fated Miskatonic student. Id really like to see this guy in some more movies, he was great in both this and Dagon, though the characters are admittedly quite similar. I wont spoil the ending for you, but the final scene involving Ezra's character is very, very cool, and not just any actor could pull it off as well as he. The supporting cast is also very good; the hotel manager reminded me a lot of the same character from Basket Case. Though we could have done without her nude scene, Chelah Horsdal was very convincing. The plot left a bit to be desired, but I guess thats just because I'm not a big fan of movies about witches in general. The ending was very surprising, but no worries I'm not going to ruin it for you. I recommend checking this out for yourself...not as good as Carpenter's Cigarette Burns that it comes packaged with, but it's close. 8/10 |

Ya, I see where you're coming from. He still could have been...I dunno, more cynical or something? Maybe it was the point, but he just seemed so hollow. It worked well near the end, but whle he was on his quest I dont think it fit at all. |

 Hostel
Biggest dissappointment I've had all year. |

 The Gorilla
Though the Ritz brothers are no Three Stooges, I'll be damned if they didn't make this one fun movie. Here they play 3 inept detectives hired to solve the Gorilla murders. The plot is pretty basic fare for these "old dark house" style mysteries, but it was done better than most in the way that it didn't make it's culprit too obvious. Most of the cast is hilarious, not just the Ritz Brothers. Patsy Kelly, who plays the maid, is great fun in that "spunky 30's woman" kind of way. Bela Lugosi is also great as the ever suspicious butler. It does have some downfalls, mostly the non-comedic cast who couldn't act their way out of a paper bag. All in all, this is a goofball mystery that comes recommended by me. 7.5/10 |

 A Shriek in the Night
With someone like Ginger Rogers involved, you'd be expecting a pretty good show, right? Well, I guess this one wasn't horrible, but I was certainly expecting more. It has your basic mystery plot: A man falls to his death under mysterious circumstances. Was it murder? Rogers plays the typical female reporter that is mandatory for this kind of show, and she's no better than anyone else who has played the same role. The detectives were a bit disappointing, usually detectives in this kind of film are pretty interesting characters, but here they mostly fall flat. One of them has a couple good lines near the first, but thats about it. Lyle Talbot's character makes up for it a bit though, I thought he was pretty cool and provided a few good chuckles. Overall, you can find a lot better films in this vein. 5/10 |

 Cinderella Man
It was pretty good although a little too long and a bit dull in parts. It's a pretty good story though and it's well acted. A- |

If anyone is interested, I compiled all of my brief reviews from this thread onto an organized website for my own (and anyone's else's convenience.) It's just a way for me to keep them all in 1 place without having to search through this thread every time I wanna see what I thought of a movie...
Anyways, here it is if anyone wants to take a look... Nothing fancy, just quick 1 minute reviews of everything I've watched in the past 6 months or so. http://horrordude.proboards80.com/index.cgi |

 Scary Movie 4- 2.5/5
This series is really falling below the radar. They're starting to spoof non-horror movies and the pop culture spoofs come into play way too much. Hell, I feel that I'm being generous and nice just to give SM4 2 and a half stars out of 5. I feel that the most it should get is a two. But, I was/am nice enough to give it the slight 2.5/5. That's not much positivitey towards the film, but it's still being nice. I'll admit that I laughed my ass off at the Saw spoofs (especially in the beginning when Dr. Phil is insulting himself). Empire Records- 1/5 Lame-brain rip-off of Clerks, and not in a good way, obviously. I didn't find mostly any humor whatsoever in here. I might've chuckled a few times and might have had a slight (and I mean slight) smile on my face, but that's about it. Just leave this one down at the bottom of the cheapie bin. |

 Blankman- 2.5/5
My problem with Blankman was that it was smart and dumb at the same time. It was smart because Damon Wayans played Daryll, who was a nerdy scientist who was, of course, smart. It was dumb because the whole plot and Blankman character was dumb. This didn't mix too well for me. I would've given this one a three if they fixed there altercations between smart and dumb. I guess I'll have to wait just a little bit longer to get out of my bad-movie slump. BTW- I did watch Anchorman twice and The 40-Year-Old Virgin since I'm in such a slump, but I'm not going to say they broke up the slump. |

 Tormented
Though poorly executed at times, this is a very cool ghost story. It centers around Tom Stewart, a jazz pianist who breaks up with his mistress, Vi, only days before his wedding to another woman. Vi falls off a lighthouse, and though Tom could save her, he decides not to. Her last words were something to the effect of "If I cant have you, nobody can!". Does she live up to her promise? Or is it all in Tom's guilt-ridden head? The acting and effects are above average for this kind of film, though they still arent all that great. Richard Carlson is great as the "Tormented" leading man, and Juli Reding does a good job as his dead lover, but the rest of the cast leaves something to be desired. The scenes when she apears all looked very good, much better than similar effects from that time. The rest of the effects, such as her disembodied head, looked pretty bad. As mentioned, the plot is the high point of the film. Tom grows more guilty and less sane by the minute, and Carlson handles it very well. Im sure audiences were surprised by the ending 40 some years ago when this was released, but todays audiences could see it coming a mile away. That isnt to say that it's not a cool ending, but very predictable. The score, partially stolen from the original House on Haunted Hill, works nicely throughout. Overall, I say check this out if you're into old-school haunting movies. 7.5/10 |
