The Host (2006)

Korean horror/scifi/comedy that has Scott Wilson (The Walking Dead) in the beginning. I love this movie.

The House of the Devil

Was rather disappointed by this. I was reading that it would combine elements of slasher and haunted house movies of the 80's, so I was actually expecting a mix between Friday the 13th and Amityville Horror with a Slasher typical high body count (actual bodycount is 1) and some spooks in the house (actually it's not haunted at all) so yeah...film was over very first, liked the attic scene though, but other than that, there was not much going on here.

The Woman

Now this one was entertaining, about a guy who is capturing a wild woman in the forest, bringing her to his home to "civilize" her...I loved the acting in this movie, and the progression of characters.

I thought it was alright. 5/10 for me sounds right. I think it wasn't about having a plot like 80's horror films, but the style of them in the colors, the way it was shot, etc.

Not horror's but:

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - I really liked this film, Sam Neill has always been a favourite of mine and I loved his grumpy old bushman character. Great performances across the board and quality storytelling (even if it does get silly in places). Highly recommended.

Swiss Army Man - Not sure how I feel about this one, I nearly gave up after half an hour but persevered (glad I did in hindsight). Definitely original and two very watchable performances from Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano but in the end I just didn't get what it was trying to say. Think Cast Away meets Weekend at Bernies but on a shitlload of drugs and you're halfway there.

I'm waiting to watch this with someone. It doesn't seem like a film to watch alone.

Go into it accepting that you will say 'What the fuck am I watching' at least half a dozen times.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople is an absolute gem of a coming-of-age adventure-comdedy, IMO! Loved it too. Taika Waititi is becoming a director to watch out for in coming days...very much looking forward to see how much fun & exciting THOR: RAGNAROK would be in his hands.

Haven't seen S.A.M yet but I've also heard about its ambiguous ending and that farting corpse thing ::big grin::

As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me.

A film about the German soldier Clemens Forell who escaped from a gulag pow camp in far eastern Siberia and walked all the way back to Germany.

Based on a true story.

A very good film, it has a number of sad moments too.

There was a storyline that should've been cut and the action scenes lacked budget. Besides that, good stuff.

Black Mountain Side (2014)
B/C
Decent movie inspired by The Thing. Not great but ok. And when it comes to snowy/icy/arctic horror, I'm not that picky. Especially combined with archaeology.

The Caretaker a.k.a Portend (2016)

https://s22.postimg.org/wa06zeif5/Caretaker.jpg

A young woman returns home with his boyfriend to care for her gravely ill grandmother, only to begin sleepwalking, envisioning spirits and uncovering dark secrets in her family's past.

It had some potentials (including that skinny & creepy old lady) to be a decent & twisted low budget scary film but they didn't much try to even make it that way. The lame ending made it just another average low budget horror but it really could have been a lot better & creepy. Anyway, I've seen worse & at least it wasn't as awful or bad as I expected initially.

They Found Hell (2015)

https://s13.postimg.org/sgthiqksn/TFH.jpg

A group of college students are trapped in hell after a teleportation experiment goes awry, and the inhabitants are determined to devour their souls.

As a 'made for TV' movie, at least it was somewhat better & entertaining than most other TV or low budget killer/giant shark flicks.

The Stanford Prison Experiment (2016)

https://s10.postimg.org/kb0ajttnt/SPE.jpg

Quite good & most probably it's more truthful to the real events but still enjoyed the 2001 German thriller Das Experiment (inspired by the same Standford experiment'1971) more.

Don't Blink

A decent enough concept - a group of ten people arrive at a secluded mountain resort, no petrol for the return trip and no-one around to help. One by one they disappear without a trace. Sounds like the usual slasher set up but in this case the 'culprit' is never revealed or explained.
One of those films that's worth a viewing as at least its trying to be a bit different but ultimately I was left dissatisfied. I'm all for films not explaining things every step of the way but this mystery didn't grab me enough to really care.
One to watch when there's bugger all else on..

Blood Trap 2016

Awful. Based on the trailer it looked like a fun and somewhat cheesy film. It's not what the trailer makes the film seem which is a vampire building their house as a trap for people who try to sneak in and steal or what have you. Its not quite that, but I won't say so as not to ruin it if you do decide to watch it. I HIGHLY suggest passing on the film. Yes there are vampire babies and that could be silly fun. Instead its done terribly. The film is very slow. To summarize the film I'd say its what people seem to call dude bro movies mixed serious criminals and cheesiness. Got the required psycho, the calm tough guy, pointless lesbian nude scene, the pretty boy, etc etc. And all of it combined poorly. I know I know you're thinking "but, but, but...baby vampires!" No its not fun. There's also a rape scene of a man, but it really doesn't exemplify the horror of being raped. Pass on this garbage of a film.

Flowers (2015)

https://s14.postimg.org/5yavafhkx/Flowers_2015.jpg

Definitely not for everyone as it was kind of a difficult film to sit through not only for its quite slow burn nature but also for the disturbing elements. But sill I'd like to appreciate it because as an indie feature by a debutant director not only it was decently made but it also succeeds on what it was intended to be...an abstract & grotesque showcase of a surreal horror film where six dead women wakes up in the crawl space below their killer's house to relive their nightmares & their journey through hell! An original art-house horror flick full of symbolism & surreal imagery and there was not a line of dialogue anywhere; worth a watch for the arty horror film lovers.

I've been wanting to see this for awhile.

I liked it. Some cunt girl kills Raymond's younger brother, Brice, by accident. There is a group of kids there, all friends. Raymond is slow so they decide to blame him for the death. 6 or so years later, he escapes the mental hospital to seek revenge.

It has some great practical FX. That tells me they cared to film something worthy. You take the time to do practical, you will always get my support. : )

'The Magnificent Seven' (2016)
Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt

Plot: IMDB
With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue, the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns. As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.

Phantom's Review:
First let me say, I love the 1960 film staring Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen. It's one of my favorites. Now, having said that let me say..I LOVE THE NEW MOVIE! This is the most entertaining movie I have seen all year. Plenty of action, great acting and a good story and the nice thing is, while the bones of the story are the same as the 1960 film, it's mostly an original film. The actors all play different characters and the setting and villain are different. It's almost more of a companion piece to the 1960 film than a remake. If your a western fan , GO SEE THIS, you will love it. (and yes the classic M7 Theme music is heard over the ending credits).

The Day -

Another short movie and it's an odd one. I think everyone knows Night of the Living Dead and the 1990 remake are great, classic horror movies. With The Day, it seems like all they wanted to do is make the house standoff. When I started the movie, I thought this might be bad when I saw the WWE logo. I've seen a few of their horror movies, none of which are particularly good. This one does have a cast of actors that I've seen in other movies and TV shows. It seems like I'll watch Shannyn Sossamon in almost anything these days. Yet the whole movie is basically people in an apocalypse, who knows how the apocalypse happened, stop at a house and run into bad people. Who they know are out there. Unlike the zombies where we are figuring out along with the characters what the situation is. Here we are in the dark and just there to see if this group will survive the bad group that is coming for them. A group that doesn't come off as heroic either when an event happens. There is a twist but nothing major really comes of it. It's a very bleak movie right down to the cinematography. And fairly pointless in the end.

Bloodworx -

For the most part I watched this one because Tricia Helfer is in it. Also one of the girls from Hatchet is as well. I figured maybe it will be somewhat good even though the trailer wasn't that great. The annoying guy from the Friday the 13th remake is in it too. He plays the same sort of role and gets to see another blonde girl's fun area in what looks to be a mirrored shot of the one from Friday the 13th. But overall the movie feels like a movie that actors would make while they are waiting on a good role. So basically to pick up a check. Tricia Helfer does her best here though as I guess a scientist with good intentions. Even if she goes about them in the wrong way. Her character never becomes a crazy, dark, mad scientist though. Maybe you could call her a bit mad in the modern sense but not in the movie mad scientist way.

I've seen a few science movies gone bad and they always manage to get the feel right. Even video games get it right. Whether it's a dark science type, an overly sci-fi experiment type, or an underground government lab type. This movie feels like an experiment, maybe it's supposed to. But only near the end do they try to say it's a horror movie. Even complete with a government or other agency type cliffhanger which they can't possibly believe they would ever get to make a sequel.

The Forest -

I haven't seen a good Japanese horror movie in a while. And this isn't a real made in Japan horror movie but I thought it would be good. It kind of is and isn't. If you like Japan you'll love many of the shots and scenes throughout the movie. Although checking IMDB tells me that the actual forest scenes weren't shot in Japan. So that's disappointing but then so is what happens around the halfway point. The story is that a girl goes to look for twin sister in a Japan, a country foreign to her, alone. That doesn't make much sense in real life but it's a horror movie so we go with it. I posted I think here or on the Horrordvds forum that you can make a good horror movie with just a pretty girl and good location as long as it doesn't get too silly. The remake of When a Stranger Calls is proof of that. But at that halfway point, once she's in the forest, that's when we know the direction the movie is going in. And it's not a good one.

I don't want to spoil it but this movie has the sort of thing that Cabin in the Woods made fun of. You would think a movie that is released in 2016 wouldn't attempt something that another movie said was silly back in 2012. But here we are. And even more, it ends with something I thought was misplaced in The Ward. Overall, it ends up feeling like they had an idea for a horror movie and just added the usual Japanese horror tropes thinking it would be good enough. And I guess it was since the movie was profitable. But it's not anything worth revisiting once you see it.

El desconocido aka Retribution (2015)

https://s17.postimg.org/mamqie5cv/Retribution15.jpg

Pretty good & intense Spanish thriller about Carlos, a bank manager who is driving his kids to the school but just after they leave the house, he receives an anonymous call in a phone that has been left inside and he is told a bomb has been placed under each of the car's seats, set to explode if any of them leaves their seated position. The devices will be deactivated only once Carlos transfers a large sum of money into the caller's account.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: THE GHOST DIMENSION (2015) - Couldn't believe how un-scary this move was. I don't think found footage fans would even like this one. Also they've made like seven of these and keep making references to past films to stuff no one remembers. They should have made this franchise roughly standalone like Purge and Cloverfield. Oh well. 1/10!
