Sinister 2
Better than the first, mostly due to seeing more of the snuff films. Though while watching the film I was thinking to myself, "Do I really need to watch this? Is this good for me?" I finished the film, but still not so eager to see a third. The way the snuff films are shot is very effective. I am annoyed, though, for the over used plot line of kids seeing ghosts, parents not able to, and kids not telling their parents. Over and over and over its used in movies and its annoying. 5/10 |
Don't Breathe.
I really liked this movie a lot. Mega energy and some welcome surprises. I'm not completely convinced that it's horror, but then again I'm not convinced that it isn't. What it is, is entertaining! |

The Purge: Election Year (2016)
D Bland and on the boring side. I still like the concept but the execution is just bad each time. |

Arq (2016) I.M.D.B. Trapped in a lab and stuck in a time loop, a disoriented couple fends off masked raiders while harboring a new energy source that could save humanity. Time travel movies - always interesting. And this one is well done. Technically sound, good pacing, good acting, and an interesting concept. While not spectacular, I certainly enjoyed this, and worth a watch if you like movies that play with time. 7.5/10 |

Aftershock
Took a while to get going this one but when it did there was a pretty much endless stream of brutality on show. Eli Roth's character especially, talk about having a bad day! Worth a watch but I doubt Id ever revisit it. |
also saw "The Neighbor" and "ARQ"
Enjoyed them both. While The Neighbor had kind of a "been done before" vibe to it...it still seemed somewhat original. And time fuckery movies are one of my favorite genre, so I'll forgive "ARQ"s not stellar ending. |
GRAN TORINO (2008). Great job by Clint Eastwood here-he plays one of the crankiest guys You'll EVER see! My first car was a GT (1974), but my remembrances of it are less than wonderful...always in the shop! ****

The shitty ending kinda let me down but I enjoyed it. Richard Brake tore shit up. Miles ahead of Lords of Salem and a nice mix of his first two films and The Most Dangerous Game styled hunting humans flicks. |
Wow, what's up with all the old-timers coming back?! Not that I'm complaining! I'm not! It's nice to see all of you!

Independence Day: Resurgence (2016)
C Average. One scene I thought was kinda cool. Everything else is pretty standard. Typical characters in a predictable story with lots of special effects. It's from the guy who also made Day After Tomorrow and 2012. So you kinda know what to expect. |
31 (2016)
http://s14.postimg.org/7zo75m8bl/image.jpg I'm actually quite tired of watching this typical redneck sort of characters in RZ movies! Wonder when he will make a film without these uninteresting & badly written (like in this film) shit load of characters who only left zero impression to care for them as who cares whether they would live or die at any point of time in the movie!?! Other than Doom-Head's monologue at the beginning, found this overall another very disappointing film from RZ; shitty average story with shitty characters & a crap ending. >>: D Tell Me How I Die (2016) http://s12.postimg.org/sgtr45ujh/Tell_me.jpg In a snow covered, isolated medical facility, a group of young college students paid to participate in the trial of a new memory-curing drug. It turns out that the drug works all too well, having the unintended side effect of giving its users the ability to see into the very near future...about what's going to happen next! But shortly it turns out to be their own deaths at the hands of a homicidal maniac who must be taking the same drug himself, because he seems to know what they're going to do before they do it...and there just happens to be a raging blizzard outside. An average, flawed but still quite an entertaining slasher flick! I enjoyed it mostly because as I can't recall when I've last time seen a slasher film made with a fine cast & budget. They make them hardly this days :( >>: B |

ARQ (2016)
http://s16.postimg.org/7oucp33xx/ARQ_poster.jpg >>: B+ Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016) http://s22.postimg.org/8qlnhh4wh/hun...eople_ver3.jpg This is the story of Ricky Baker - a young, overweight, orphaned juvenile offender that idealizes hip hop and creates haiku poetry as a method of externalizing emotional conflict, due to the influence of counseling and therapy sessions. Stuck in New Zealand's sub-par youth welfare system, Ricky ends up on a rotting farm somewhere in the rural back blocks with his new foster parents. The real fun begins when a national manhunt is ordered for this rebellious kid and his foster uncle who go "missing" in the wild New Zealand bush. An absolute gem of a kid/family-adventure flick from the director of WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS (2014)! Not only the chemistry between that cute-fat kid and Sam Neill works so wonderfully & a blast to watch in almost every scene but the film also delivers quite a beautifully moving story with great dose of humor from start to finish. X-Men Apocalypse (3D) (2016) I.M.D.B. After the re-emergence of the world's first mutant, world-destroyer Apocalypse, the X-Men must unite to defeat his extinction level plan. Other than a couple of stand out moments (Quicksilver), this movie was fairly mediocre. Apocalypse was unimpressive and his motivations unclear. Plot-holes abound. If any characters arcs exist, they are nonsensical. And the dialogue was pretty lazy. Turn your mind off, eat popcorn, enjoy the flashing lights and pretty colours. 6.5/10 |

31 (2016) "Five carnival workers are kidnapped and held hostage in an abandoned, Hell-like compound where they are forced to participate in a violent game, the goal of which is to survive twelve hours against a gang of sadistic clowns." I didn't think I'd like this, but it was surprisingly decent. The first act was poorly directed, written and edited, but it got better later. It was obvious that quite a bit had to be cut out to get an R rating, so maybe the uncut version would fix some of the pacing issues in the first 30 minutes. It's certainly not good entertainment, but it's gritty and brutal enough to be fun. 6/10 |

The Inheritance -
I did the usual look through the horror selections and found this movie. They didn't have a trailer but instead a quick clip of a scene in a car that I thought was hilarious. Also I saw Keith David in the cast list. I think the last movie I reviewed with him was that Internet email movie, I think it was called Chain Mail. It wasn't the best nor the worst, yet he always gives good performances. After The Thing and They Live you can't really doubt his judgement with horror. Also, an actress was listed in the credits that was kind of familiar. Looking it up, I saw that she was in Trick r Treat. The Inheritance was short so I watched. The Inheritance is something I've never seen or can't remember seeing before. It's a Black horror movie. The movie actually has a token White couple in it. And of course being a horror movie you can guess what happens to them. But I think the movie was sold as a Black horror movie and nothing else. Like they didn't even know how to make a good horror movie. It feels amateur and low budget at times. The story doesn't even make much sense. I could really tear this movie apart as a horror fan. But there is no point. The movie pretty much sucks. Yes Keith David is still ok in the movie. But this is one movie he should have walked away from. |

Pacific Rim (2013)
8/10 Watched it again. Such a fun film. It's really good at being what it is. There's not a lot of depth in characters, or the science, or the plot... no poorly done pretense to be something it's not; it's just a fun sci-fi fantasy ride. Best looking giant monsters I've even seen on film. |
PERFUME (2006). Lush photography, costumes etc and a pretty intriguing story line about a Guy who is blessed (or cursed) with a unique sense of smell.
Thought this was really well made, but ending was just stupid and truly takes away the impact of the rest of the film. *** |
