NEWB, Thanks for the help!!

newb 07-26-2004 09:39 AM

I thought it was very good. I actually watched it with my son and he enjoyed it as well. I'm bringing him up right. I have Battle Royale 2 downloaded on my comp. I understand that one is not as good. But I will be watching it anyway.

One good thing about this movie is I highly doubt with the subject matter that Hollywood will try to remake it like they are with some other Asian releases.

Didn't mean to quote myself.....I clicked the wrong option. Oh well...another post for my count.

Battle Royale

anyone see Battle Royale or know where i could buy it? For those that haven't Battle Royale is like a "Series 7" meets "Mean Guns" if that means anything to you movie buffs.

cool film

EXTR3MIST 11-04-2004 03:30 AM

Battle Royale is a little overrated, due in no small part to the film being an introduction to many to Far-Eastern shock cinema.

That no such wild rides involving schoolkids had been seen in the Western mainstream up until this have made the film a rather undeserved cult classic.

The plot is full of holes, the violence quite boring, and once the effect of murderous schoolgirls quickly wears off there's not much left except for a drippy romance and a bland and disappointing ending.

It all could have been so much better, and Kinji Fukusaku (RIP) has made much better movies in Street Mobster and Graveyard of Honor.

urgeok 11-04-2004 05:01 AM

I got mine on ebay ..

and i have to admit .. it didnt exactly stop me in my shoes either ...

MichaelMyers 11-04-2004 05:03 AM

I thought it was alright...cool premise...you have to wait awhile for all the other school children to die...:o

Battle Royale DVD? WTF?!

http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?...vieid=70004548

This is a weird situation. Battle Royale has NOT been released in the US. The people who own the rights don't want to liscense it for a US release. But Netflix has it. Netflix, to my knowledge, doesn't do foreign DVDs, and they certainly don't deal with bootlegs. And to double check that it hasn't been released, I checked Amazon.com, Buy.com, Video ETA, DVD Aficionado, and IMDB. Nothing. Netflix should not have this movie. But they do. And it's not all of a sudden, either. It has 6 reviews and over 500 ratings, and is on Very Long Wait (but NOT Very Long Wait: Out of Print).

Weird...

friday13thfan 01-27-2005 05:33 PM

that is werid

but netflix has been known to get movies and have thme for rent even before they come out on sell for the public

ChEEbA 01-27-2005 05:41 PM

Weird...agreed.
But, doesn't really matter does it?
In my exp in the past, with Japanese/asian films where I've got to see both the US and Jap/asian versions, the version of the dvd from the country out of which it was released, usually has better extras, AND better trailers...I usually get the those versions unless there's no english audio and/or subtitles.
You'll find that unless it's a dodgy, cheap third party released dvd, that you'll get more out of the "original" dvd anyways...

Bit of a different situation here, though. Amazon, Video ETA, and DVD Aficionado should have information on it before it's released. There would have DEFINATELY been news that this one would be released in the states finally

This is a 2 disc SE. And it's Unrated, which means it hasn't been censored all to hell.

knife_fight 01-27-2005 05:46 PM

I downloaded it. how did everyone else see it if it's not available?

The STE 01-27-2005 05:56 PM

downloaded it

I mean, you can get it in the states, but you've gotta get it from one of those online sites that sell foreign DVDs

ChEEbA 01-27-2005 07:39 PM

BR...2-disk Special edition huh?
I'll have to look out for that...I've still yet to see #2...

The STE 01-27-2005 07:45 PM

they've only got BR1 on Netflix. The cover is like that one PAL Region 0 SE, but Netflix does NTSC DVDs. MAN this is driving me nuts. I'd ask Netflix, but they wouldn't respond anyways.

ChEEbA 01-27-2005 07:59 PM

So, you want the western release of the 2 disk special edition of BR1??

I could always check out some Aus. online retailers, they're usually pretty good for this kinda thing...assuming that you not being able to get it it actually the problem?

The STE 01-27-2005 08:10 PM

there is no problem. The point of the thread is that Netflix should NOT have this movie. For them to have this version of this movie, there would have to be in existance a 2 disc SE of Battle Royale that was commercially and legally released in the United States. Such a disc does not exist, and yet Netflix is carrying it. I have no idea how this is possible, and neither does anybody at 2 other message boards I go to, one of which is ABOUT Japanese movies (specifically, ones like Battle Royale)

Finding a copy isn't the problem. If I wanted a copy I'd go to ebay. The "problem" is that what Netflix has should/does not exist

newb 01-28-2005 04:46 AM

Here in R.I. I can walk into any Newbury Comics and pick up the SE two disc Battle Royale for about $25.As a matter of fact...I did.

urgeok 01-28-2005 04:53 AM

i got mine on ebay .. i dont know if its cut or not .. it came from Hong Kong.

I have to admit it really didnt rock my world ..

Ok, but comic book stores carry import DVDs a lot of the time. Netflix doesn't.

ChEEbA 01-28-2005 03:34 PM

It's evolution, baby...

The STE 01-28-2005 05:10 PM

Yeah, but if they were going to start carrying import DVDs then one would think they'd let at least the customers know, right? They advertised that they were lowering the prices a bit so that everybody knew, but carrying import DVDs is a bigger deal, and not so much as an e-mail to the customers about it.

The STE 01-28-2005 06:16 PM

it's gone from Very Long Wait to Long Wait. I don't know how long it's been on VLW, but if it keeps dropping it might be available by March

The STE 01-29-2005 08:14 AM

The Bonus Disc is available now. I've moved it high on the queue, so when I ship SLC Punk back I'll get the bonus disc

ChEEbA 01-29-2005 05:46 PM

So what....is this a place you buy movies from, hire 'em, or both??

The STE 01-29-2005 05:50 PM

http://www.netflix.com
You rent movies from them. A monthly fee, you get a certain amount of movies out at a time, keep them as long as you want, then mail them back

ChEEbA 01-29-2005 05:54 PM

Can you buy ex rentals or new dvds from 'em? I didn't yet go to the link, because I'm unsure of whether or not it's available here.

The STE 01-29-2005 06:56 PM

can't buy anything from them. They send you the disc in a little envelope, you send it back in the same envelope when you're done with it

The STE 01-29-2005 07:03 PM

from Battleroyalefilms.net:
Quote:

Battle Royale on Netflix: The American online rental service Netflix has, for some reason, added BR to its library, even though there is no R1 release of the title. The picture in its listing is of the UK PAL Special Edition by Tartan, which will not play on many American DVD players, which adds to the confusion. If you're one of the lucky people who has this coming to your mailbox (there's currently a long wait for the title), please let us know which version it turns out to be--the speculation ranges from the highly unlikely scenario that Tartan (which has recently opened a U.S. division) has quietly acquired U.S. release rights and released the film with no press whatsoever, to Netflix now adding import R0 NTSC titles to its library (either a bootleg, the R0 NTSC Korean Special Edition, or the R0 NTSC Tartan UK Original Version).

It always seems like the special features on the official Asian releases have no Eng. subtitles... too bad, really. I'd love to know what they're talking about in the "Gozu" making of - for example.

The STE 02-03-2005 05:20 PM

the bonus disc works fine, the movie disc will ship tomorrow
