I'm with neverending on this one. Asylum was far better than the first season. Both were equally great, IMO.

I am way too excited for Coven, though.

neverending 10-08-2013 06:26 PM

Interview with Kathy Bates! Check out her costume.

See going to be SO amazing in that role. Madame LaLaurie is always fascinating to read about so I'm excited to see her play this role.

DrFrankensteinsGirl 10-09-2013 06:57 PM

I'm watching it right now. I've only seen the first season but so far Coven looks amazing I love witches so when I heard that season 3 was going to be witches I got super excited and it is not disappointing.

I'm watching it now too! Already off to a great start.

Giganticface 10-09-2013 10:48 PM

That was a freaking awesome opener. This season is going to be killer.

staceybethh 10-09-2013 11:37 PM

Holy crap that premiere episode was awesome!!

neverending 10-09-2013 11:42 PM

There was definitely a lot going on. It felt kind of scattered to me. One particular plot device even shocked me. I'm sure all the elements will come together and be amazing, but to me, it wasn't quite there yet.

Please remember to post spoiler warnings if you discuss any specifics,

Yeah, it was a bit inconsistent, perhaps because of the stark difference in the two settings/eras. Also, something tells me this season isn't going to be as gritty as season 2, but who knows. That basement scene near the beginning was pretty harsh. I just love how stylized this show is. I also love seeing the same actors each season in different roles. And the opening credit sequence, once again, is pure goosebump juice.

Ooo - I'm curious; what shocked you?

...

I thought that it was a good, solid opener. I'm not sure if this season is really touching on a sub-genre of horror that I particularly like but that being said, the casting and direction (and knowing how much I've loved the last two seasons) definitely kept me a fan. The fiance wasn't a huge fan of the season opener, but come on - You only have an hour - I thought that it did just what it wanted to - Introduced a peak into history and characters effectively... And I can't wait for the rest of the season.

***SPOILERS***

Two things in particular shocked me:
  • Delphine LaLaurie's atrocities upon her captive slaves, especially the placing of the cow's head (shudder)
  • Zoe Benson's "power" - When we see what happens when she has sex with her boyfriend at the start of the episode, I assume that the bleeding was a byproduct of something else... But the reveal at the end that her sexuality literally kills - That was unexpected and definitely shocked me.

SPOILERS!!!

I think this will be the best season of the show yet. It's like a real show instead of the whole "let's see how crazy we can get and how far we can push things" of the past two seasons. But they do push things in this show pretty far for normal TV. There was tons of good dialog with all the characters. I like Emma Roberts character the most. That dinner scene was funny. I've never seen her in anything before. I think her Nancy Drew movie is on my list. Also, Scream 4 but I haven't seen Scream 3 yet. It was surprising what happened to her. I didn't catch how they were able to drug her. Perhaps the drink and one of the girls was in on it? You hear about this sort of thing happening a lot in the news these days and how people brag about it on the Internet. It's really disgusting behavior. What she did was more than warranted and it was a great shot too. I can't wait for tonight's episode. Witches, the undead, and voodoo. This is going to be awesome.

And I love the new theme song in this show too.

neverending 10-19-2013 09:11 PM

I enjoyed the second episode more than the jumble of the first. The plots have been set, and we get down to storytelling. Some great acting pyrotechnics between Lange and Bates. Looking forward to next week.

DrFrankensteinsGirl 10-19-2013 10:44 PM

I love watching Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange going at it, those ladies are incredible actresses. I also loved the little quip last episode about Stevie Nicks being a witch, I'm sure she got a kick out of that :). Can't wait for Wednesday this new season looks like it's gonna be killer.

Absolutely! Not to mention, I love Lily Rabe - I got really excited when I saw her appear on screen - Looking forward to seeing her character.

ImmortalSlasher 10-23-2013 05:04 PM

Madison is just awesome. She's the girl with a dangerous side that you just let slide because she's so cool and hot. You even see how dangerous she is when Fiona mentions her mass murder and then we really get to see the results a scene later. Yet the shot with her in her undies made me 99% sure I wanted the Blu-ray. Most girls can't pull off the animal print bikini. But wow. Plus she drives the new Jaguar. And even with her smoking dope in public during the day like it's no big deal and abandoning her roommate. You just have to like her. The conflict between her and Queenie is great. I'm sure there will be a real blow up later.

This season already has more interesting stuff compared to the previous two. Maybe it's just the whole theme of witches and the setting. But this is far better than I expected it was going to be. I love the new theme song too. And the songs in Episode 2. I used to listen to the second one a lot when I was young. It's funny that the singer is supposed to be a witch. It's like all the actors and writers are on their game. And so much crazy stuff is going on in the show. I can't wait for episode 3 tonight and to see what the real life Minotaur will do!

neverending 10-23-2013 06:47 PM

Well, I agree that this season is awesome, but not with your assessment of the previous seasons. I think you're just mesmerized by the hot young girls. :p

Having grown up in the 60s and 70s, I can tell you there were a lot of subtle little touches in several of the plot lines of Season 2 that a younger viewer might not necessarily pick up on.

DrFrankensteinsGirl 10-23-2013 08:04 PM

SPOILERS!!! SPOILERS FOR EP. 3

What? What? That was crazy, a bag of craziness just exploded all over American Horror Story. Poor FrankenTate (that's what my fiancee has been calling Kyle lol) Watching him and his mom...yuck really disturbing. Fiona really is the baddest witch in town and I love her more each time she's on screen. Also um WTF Queenie???? Also Zoe is a terrible judge of character and I just want to hug Misty Day and sing Fleetwood Mac songs with her until she feels loved. Those are my jumbled crazy thoughts about tonights episode, I'll be more coherent later I just need to process everything lol.

hammerfan 10-25-2013 07:16 AM

Apparently, Jessica Lange is leaving after next season.

Seems like a smart move for her. She'll spend four years wowing people with her bravura performances on the show and then she'll have her pick of major film projects in what is certainly one of the most sucessful comebacks in movie history.

neverending 10-25-2013 07:23 PM

After watching the third episode all I can say is WOW. They're really amping things up. Watching all the amazing veteran actresses in this show is pure joy; not only Lange and Bates, but Angela Bassett and now Patti Lupone and is that... can that be?... YES, it's MARE WINNINGHAM. Where in the world did they dig her up? She certainly has changed! Loved her any years ago, and it was really a treat seeing her pop up on this show.

This season is already amazing.

I agree. So far, this is my favorite season.

ferretchucker 10-28-2013 03:08 AM

I'd never got round to watching this show before and oh BOY what a mistake! I'll be retracing the earlier seasons in the agonising week-long gaps between these episodes. Absolutely gripped.

SPOILERS (in white)

Not sure how much of this applies to the earlier seasons but I do love the feeling of expendibility of the characters - seeing Roberts' throat cut this early was not expected. Likewise, what the fuck has happened to Miss. Sidibe? (Her power is so hilarious and awesome)

I also love the equality-message undertones. No, it's not majorly subtle, but it is interesting and there's enough surface level action that it doesn't feel like we're being beaten over the head with it. The scene where Bassett refuses Paulson the magic just because she was born into the wrong family - so beautifully ironic whilst also being SOOO frustrating, but that being the aim, I love it.

neverending 11-02-2013 08:48 AM

SPOILERS

I'm not sure how I feel about this latest episode. The "Council of Witches" seemed a bit like an episode of Bewitched, though the parody of Truman Capote was delicious.

DrFrankensteinsGirl 11-06-2013 07:31 PM

Holy cow tonight's episode was awesome!!

Spoilers in white

Fiona has been cemented as my favorite character after she brought that woman's baby back to life. Fiona's trying to find redemption as a mother to Cordelia is so far one of my favorite parts of the show. You can tell that she loves her and she really does want to be a good mom but all she knows how to be is the selfish HBIC that she doesn't really know where to start to fix things. I wasn't really digging Zoe's character too much until this episode, the zombie chainsaw massacre was awesome. I'm glad she's gone from standing in the background looking like a scared bird at everything to being the one that slaughters all the zombies and saves the school. Also whatever that shit was that she did at the end is a way better power to have than killer vagina. Also Cordelia's husband is a piece of shit and I hope Fiona roasts him.

hammerfan 11-07-2013 04:01 AM

DrFrankensteinsGirl:

I totally agree with you on all counts. And, I really think Cordelia's husband is in for a world of hurt - both from Fiona AND Cordelia. Remember, Cordelia "saw" what he did!

ImmortalSlasher 11-07-2013 06:00 PM

Two episodes and the show is missing something or someone. But things were crazy last episode. I love the butler's reaction about going to his room. And one character finally stepped up and stopped acting stupid. Also the chainsaw! Things are really building up.

Plus hopefully she'll still make the occasional guest appearance, which would be awesome.

I agree with all of this, especially Zoe - I really want to see her become badass.

I actually rewatched episode 4 ("Fearful Pranks") and then episode 5 ("Burn Witch Burn") in succession; I feel as though the two together were one long, fantastic episode - Here are my thoughts:

[SPOILERS]

  • I am really fascinated by the treatment of male characters this season, in particular Evan Peters (Kyle, though I keep wanting to call him Tate) and Denis O'Hare (Spalding), whom we have seen in past seasons. It took me a while to pick up on this but I enjoy how American Horror story has played with our my expectations for these characters - Since Peters played a major role in the previous seasons (last season especially), I expected him to surface with a major role opposite Farmiga (Zoe) once again. Instead, he's been diminished to a drooling Monster - Likewise with O'Hare; I was incredibly excited to see his name in the credits and it took me a second episode with Spalding to notice that he was actually O'Hare - Again, my expectations of O'Hare (hopes that he would be fulfilling a larger, edgier role - I would love to see another Russel Edgington!) were completely confounded; Like Kyle, Spalding is a mumbling Monster... Coupling this realization with the reveal of Josh Hamilton (Hank Foxx), who referred to (and revealed) himself as a Monster ("What were you last Halloween?" "A Monster"), it seems as though, while our heroines discover and dispense more power, our men are dissolving into Monsters (it'll be interesting to see what happens to our Neighbor Boy)... I really like this theme of female-empowerment.
  • Fiona breathing life into the stillborn infant reduced me to tears. Such a moving scene. In fact, all of the hospital scenes with her have revealed a lot about her relationship with her daughter, her regrets, and ultimately her love.

[/SPOILERS]

ferretchucker 11-13-2013 04:00 PM

Absolutely loving this show to pieces. I'll always enjoy a show/film that leaves you to decide if you like the characters or not because they all have their flaws. And this isn't just little flaws - Batman is sometimes reckless but he's undoubtedly the hero.

Instead, I find myself sympathising with Kathy Bates' racist maid of torture and a Butler with a (SPOILER TO FOLLOW ) dead girl in his bedroom (SPOILER OVER, SIGH WITH RELIEF). As for Cordelia, WOW. Despite her loveliness, I WAS finding her kinda boring. Guess THAT won't be a problem anymore.

ImmortalSlasher 11-14-2013 07:09 PM

Last episode was over too soon. I'm glad my favorite character is back though. Even if she's not right yet.

ferretchucker 11-16-2013 04:53 PM

Zoe is quickly becoming one of the most annoying characters on TV. There's not a single decision she makes that doesn't cause a facepalm.

Wednesday 11-18-2013 12:52 PM

I'm really liking this season so far, but i feel like it lacks something that the first & second season had (not sure what, LOL)

My favourite character so far is Misty :D

& like others, I keep wanting to call Kyle, Tate haha

darkchamber 11-19-2013 01:02 PM

I've only seen the first episode, so far. Does it pick up? I'm feeling like this season is lacking something. It hasn't pulled me in like the other two seasons.

ChronoGrl 11-19-2013 04:22 PM

Maybe it's a genre thing for you, like it was for me... Wasn't totally psyched by the Pilot (just not my favorite sub-genre) but now I'm hooked. Good solid story-telling, acting and direction. Definitely stick with it, especially if you've liked previous seasons.

Thanks! It could be a genre thing for me as well. I love the actors, they did so well the first two seasons. And the new ones seem promising. I'll start up again tonight.

ImmortalSlasher 11-22-2013 06:14 AM

I don't know about this now. The show is kind of losing steam just like with the other seasons. It's of course headed for a big blow up. But it feels like they are starting the whole twist thing again. Maybe things will be more to my liking in the next episode.

ChronoGrl 11-26-2013 07:09 AM

Oh, man, I disagree with you! I thought the last episode was fantastic!!

[SPOILERS]

  • Fiona and the Axeman - I thought that the Axeman was going to blackmail her into - I don't know - Making him into some kind of super-human or something... But the twist I found delightfully creepy! (also I'm always impressed when my assumptions with a plot twist are wrong) - It's so a macabre yet oddly romantic tale - I love the idea that he's always watched over her like a daughter and then fell in love with her - So beautifully macabre!
  • Spalding SPEAKS! - I love Dennis O'Hare; seeing Spalding speak was fantastic - I hope that he's not actually dead; this character is so eccentric and interesting. The concept of the living tongue was also creepy and well-done. I'm enjoying watching Zoe's powers extend - I like the idea of her potentially following the Fiona path
  • The Madison & Kyle relationship was creepy and well-done (What struck me in particular is that it really hit me that here are two DEAD PEOPLE fucking - Whereas I never really had that problem with, say, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I liked that the scene unnerved me) - And the threesome with Zoe just added to the creepiness. Brilliant.
  • As for Queenie and Delphine... I wasn't sure how to feel about this relationship with Queenie supposedly was warming up to Delphine... I didn't buy it and wasn't really a fan... But yet, when she turns Delphine over, I couldn't help but feel some sympathy (WHAT'S WRONG WITH ME?? DELPHINE IS AWFUL!!) - The fact that I feel so conflicted with it just punctuates how well-done the writing is!

[/SPOILERS]

Loved that episode. Can't wait to see what happens next!

zombiegummiebear 11-26-2013 05:03 PM

I love this season maybe it's just because, I love witches but, this messed up crazy show just has me hooked. Jessica Lange is amazing and I never thought we'd see such a diverse cast on TV. There's so much going on that just drives soccer moms mad and I'm loving every second.

The Villain 11-26-2013 05:17 PM

I'm not liking this season as much as the others. There just seems to be something missing

neverending 11-26-2013 10:44 PM

This may be a generational and/or gender based thing, I'm thinking. I'm not digging this season as much as previous seasons either. I still like it and watch every episode, but it's not wowing me like last season. I think they're definitely focusing on the younger demographic this year.

I want more Kathy Bates, and I want to see her duking it out with Lange the way Lange and Cromwell did last season.

I agree. I also think they're aiming toward a younger demographic. I want more Kathy Bates, too! The scenes with her and Fiona are so good. I'd also like to see more scenes with Jessica Lange and Angela Bassett.
