Am i blind or is King Kong (the 33 version)missing from that list?
Maybe add: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1936) The Unholy Three (the remake) Dead Eyes of London (1939) |
You're blind.
|
Indeed I am lol....
I checked that a few times too.... |
List sent, you can relax everyone!
|
The first edit of my list has 14 titles... dear dear dear...
What a great decade for horror. And I didn't even include Mad Love, even though Lorre is one of my all time faves and this is one of his greatest roles... but that film has a fatal flaw I can't get past every time I watch it... |
send in my list
|
I'll send mie in when i return to ireland.
|
Damn this one is tough....Really hard to knock it down to 10.
Isn't Shadow of Chinatown a serial? Can we include these - I love The Phantom Creeps and thats 1939.. |
I hope this didn't die.:(
|
Yeah, it was just getting interesting. Keep posting so the thread stays at the top; like Gumtree!
|
I promise you, it hasn't died. My work schedule just got turned on its head with very little notice, and I've been sleeping through most of my days off. Keep watching. We'll be back on track shortly.

Keep us posted cheers
|
Keep up the good work, it's appreciated!

*bump*
Now that the Vampire tourney & BR IV are drawing to a close, I will be diverting my attention to completing some of these projects which had immense potential but tapered off at the beginning. Contrary to Flayed's title of the thread though, we shall be starting all the way from 1897 when Le Manoir Du Diable was made, and regarded as the first ever horror film. And, we shall expand our choices to picking the best films from every decade of horror, and stack them up together with plenty of Honorable Mentions. I am hoping we can chisel out 200 of the absolute finest examples of our genre and carve them in stone for the present fans, and for the generations to come. Watch this thread for more details soon. |

Here is how we are going to go through this compilation...
First off, I humbly request all those 14 HDC members who sent in their lists of their chosen films from the 1920s/1930s to me. Please check your Sent boxes to see if you have a copy saved in there. If not (and you can't remember your choices), don't fret. We will do the 1920s/1930s again, this time by picking not 10 choices (10 is too low a number for a whole decade, not to mention the number of films which were made in the later decades). We shall go with 20 choices from each decade, and then prune the list further until we have (at least) 10 representations from each decade to make it a solid 100. And yes, there will be scope for argument for choices in this very thread. If you feel a particular film should be included (like neverending wanted to argue for The Phantom Carriage), you can put forth your case in the film's favor. If enough people are convinced with the argument, the film will be included. Since the inception of horror films started from George Melies' shorts from the 1890s, they will be included in the master list of very-early horrors right from the 1890s through till 1919, a time span which saw some excellent short films such as Edison's Frankenstein, Le Manoir Du Diable, Bluebeard, etc. and some full length films as well - Der Golem, The Student of Prague, etc. We shall round off our final choices from the other decades with examples of these very-early horror cinema as Special Mentions. Of course, they will be bundled with the choices from the 1920s as well. Stay tuned for the first Master List - from the 1890s through 1929. One more point - If you haven't seen a particular film but have heard of it and realise it's importance in the genre, you can research on it and it's significance and include it in your list. It is not necessary for you to have seen a film to include it as your choice. We start off soon. |
Here we go - the first set of films from the 1890s, through the 1900s, 10s and the 20's, until 1929.
I have deliberately omitted those films which did not get any votes on IMDB from 1920 to 1929. For the period of 1890-1919, I have kept out those films which got less than 100 votes, since most of those films are fantasy shorts made by George Melies and other vintage masters. Choose 20 from the following and send me your PM:

First entry in with some solid choices.
Let's see plenty more, folks! |

The Sealed Room probably deserves a place on the list too.... D.W. Griffith short loosely based on The Cask of Amontillado. Another one that falls into the Drama category on IMDb but has plenty of gothic horror elements and is a good early example of tension and suspense.
Also wanted to add that alot of these old movies are readily avaliable on youtube and pretty decent quality, so well worth checking out for those that haven't seen them.... Still got a few slots to fill on my top 20, but should be done in the next day or so. |
