burning dvd's help

i burned the movie onto disc, but it wont play on the dvd player.

does anyone know whats wrong?

azathoth777 06-25-2007 05:21 PM

Did you burn it on a DVD burner or on your computer? What kind of disc is it, RW+ or RW-. Some DVD players will only play one or the other or at least have troubles playing both.

bloody_ribcut 06-25-2007 05:55 PM

i used both +r and -r dvd's. when i put the disc on my computer it showed that its there but on a reguler dvd player it didnt play.

ManchestrMorgue 06-25-2007 11:59 PM

What software did you use to burn it?

Can you try to see if it works on any other players?

How old is your DVD player/what type?

bloody_ribcut 06-26-2007 08:48 AM

software? im not too familiar, i used a cd burner on my computer.

it worked on my comp, i only have one regular dvd player.
its an apex i believe.

VampiricClown 06-26-2007 12:52 PM

What type of file was the movie? Also, were you trying to "backup" a dvd or burn a downloaded one?

bloody_ribcut 06-26-2007 12:56 PM

its in avi. and it was downloaded.

There is your problem right there. An avi file will only play on a very select few DVD players. Luckily for me, it plays on mine. But you are going to have to get a program to transfer the file type. I think the correct file type would be that of .dvd or something like that. Look into it. Hope it helps.

swiss tony 06-26-2007 01:13 PM

make sure you have selected the right dvd type before burning. that was my downfall for a while

zwoti 06-26-2007 01:24 PM

chances are you have copied the file to a dvd, you should have converted to a dvd and burnt this.

Angra 06-26-2007 01:28 PM

Download the program "convertxtodvd".

That's the only program i use.

But u should install Winrar first.

swiss tony 06-26-2007 01:33 PM

i use clonedvd2

Fred Krueger 06-26-2007 02:26 PM

If you're tryign to make a DVD from an avi file you'll need a converter to switch the file. You could try a free one but i recommend you look into payed ones as well. Easier and faster. When you burn the ISO file the software outputs (or whatever file it gives you) make sure you burn on 4 speed. Some DVD players will not read burnt DVDs correctly unless they are burnt with a very low speed. I believe DVD video format is mpeg 2.

ManchestrMorgue 06-27-2007 02:10 AM

AVI2DVD

http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html

This program is free and will do exactly what you want - ie convert an AVI file to DVD format. It will create an ISO image which you can then burn to a DVD blank with something like Nero.

If you don't have Nero, you could use this free program:

DVD ISO Recorder

http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com/isorecorder.htm

Sorry for taking a while to reply - haven't had a chance to check back after asking the original questions.

But these things should do what you want - for free.

Sure. Lawsuits are fun.

AmericanManiac 06-28-2007 04:10 AM

LOL, that avi2dvd is free if you want watermark on the final, atleast thats what it's telling me unless I downloaded the wrong program. I just got into doing this as well except backing up, my dvds. Yeah just don't get caught because it is against the law. :D Thanks for all of your help guys.

This has not happened to me - are you sure you didn't download the wrong thing?

It has been a while since I installed it - no doubt there have been updates since - but the website still says that it is freeware. Or is this the divx watermark that is put on by the divx codec (but you can disable it).

Fred Krueger 06-28-2007 11:49 AM

I just don't see the benefit in downloading movies illegally and burning them. Movies are not expensive, you just may have to save some money and wait a few weeks, big deal I'd rather have a DVD quality copy, plus the case and extras than a poor copy with artifacting that doesn't work on 50% of DVD players.

Just my opinion of course

What about movies that are unavailable for purchase?

I agree with you. I like to buy (rather than rent or anything else). However there is lots of media on the internet that is not commercial. For example, have a look at the Internet Archive, under their Moving Pictures section. They have lots of video - including old/public domain films but also episodes of the Computer Chronicles etc that are downloadable. It is ok to watch these things on your computer monitor, but sometimes it is nice to watch them on the TV, hence the need to convert to DVD.

Personally, I don't download copyright movies because DVD's are cheap, I prefer the quality and like having a collection of DVD's with their cases/artwork etc. And I want to support the release of cult/horror films because I want to see more films released, especially older/more obscure titles.

But there is a lot of media in the AVI format that is not copyrighted movies - eg video podcasts, and media similar to what can be found on archive.org. A lot of this stuff CAN'T be purchased (and is provided willingly by it's creators at no cost, electronically). For this stuff, the tools that have been mentioned in this thread are very valuable. And it is in that spirit that I have provided advice/links.

Disease 08-14-2007 09:34 AM

what's the deal with That?

What's the deal with spyware, aparently i have some on my pc, Can anyone of you tell me a safe program to download to get rid of it?

Norton doesn't seem to be helping......

It has got me beat.

ManchestrMorgue 08-14-2007 09:51 AM

Try these:

Windows Defender www.microsoft.com/spyware

Spybot Search and Destroy www.safer-networking.org

Spyware can be hard to remove, though...

Disease 08-14-2007 10:05 AM

are they both safe?

Disease 08-14-2007 10:14 AM

How do I even know if I have gotten rid of it or not?

LoudLon 08-14-2007 10:25 AM

I use a program called Spyware Doctor. You can download it for free and run a scan, but you'll have to register it (for 35 bucks) for it to remove the malware/spyware it finds.

But, I will attest to its effectiveness; the first time I ran it, it found over one hundred and twenty spyware/malware objects that neither Spybot S&D nor Adaware picked up. I've been using it for about three years now, and I've yet to encounter a better spyware/malware remover. It also provides an On-Guard function and will alert you if you're entering a site which may potentially contain harmful content. It also locates and removes trojans, BHO's and CWS.

Also of use is a program called CCleaner, which cleans all temporary files from you computer. And as for a good anti-virus program, I recommend Avast! anti-virus. You can get both from www.download.com. Both CCleaner and Avast! are totally free.

Funny thing is, even though Avast is totally free, it's way better than Norton or McAfee and located viral activity on my computer that neither Norton nor McAfee picked up on.

Disease 08-14-2007 10:32 AM

I've been getting pop ups for spyware doctor, i was going to downloaod it, but I didn't trust it.....Aparently I might have a trojan, is that hard to get rid of?

Disease 08-14-2007 11:36 AM

I did the free scan with spyware doctor, but what will actually clear all these crap viruses of the system?

ManchestrMorgue 08-14-2007 02:13 PM

The two that I recommended are well known, trusted, and safe. One is from Microsoft.

As to how you know if you have truly gotten rid of everything - that is the problem. Spyware makers are getting good at making these things harder to detect and remove.

Sometimes, depending on what you are infected with, and how much spyware you have, the easiest and most sure thing is to reinstall windows. It is a pain to have to back up all the data etc but at least you know that all the unwanted stuff is gone.

The Mothman 08-14-2007 02:33 PM

Spybot and adaware. both free and both the best. run them each around once a month.

scarecrow666 08-15-2007 10:21 AM

Use Ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy, and CCleaner. Restart your computer and press F8 and enter safe mode.Once at the menue screen IGNOR Administrator but load up your regular profile.
Use CCleaner first following all the actions.
Scan with both one after the other. But make sure they are all updated first.

They are all free.

Hope this helps.

Also its a good idea to also have Comodo firewall(free) and Avast antivirus(free).

Get them at download.com, it works the best for me.

Amazing how the most popular and expensive antivirus programs (Norton and McAffee) regularly come out close to the bottom of the list when rated. Goddamn used car salesmen is what they are.

microsoft did even worse

ad-aware
spybot - search & destroy

should get rid of your adware/spyware

get yourself a decent firewall, AV.

if you ever go to a web page and it says you have spyware - scan here. don't click it - you'll just re-infect your pc.

and most importantly - don't use IE

scarecrow666 08-16-2007 02:02 AM

There one very good one but it costs money.>Spyware Doctor.

The Mothman 08-16-2007 03:04 PM

for ones that cost money,
Stopzilla is the best by far.
it puts a little minimizable window in the lower right corner of your screen. everytime any type of virus is introduced to your computer, it shows up in the window. from there you can delete it.

Disease 08-17-2007 12:08 PM

I've been scanning with a lot of these different programs over the last few days, it's getting better, but something is slowing it down big time...

There are many different factors on why your PC has slowed down.

How many items do you have running on taskbar?
How many shortcuts on desktop?
How many processes are running? -CTRL/ALT/DEL.
How much memory do you have? more the better.
Do you have a desktop wallpaper.

Have you cleaned out the crap from your registory? >Make a restore point first.
Have a look at this link it could help you.
http://www.informationweek.com/showA...leID=189400897

Do you have all of your correct drivers installed?

All in no particular order.

Hope this gives you some ideas.
