No, it's just a means of making us appreciate products we already paid money for and pay money for similar ones.

the fact that the wrestler didn't get a best picture nomination is criminal. |
i'm predicting a virtual benjamin button sweep.
maybre rourke for best actor - but i feel the momentum going for benjamin button |
No way, Slumdog's got it in the bag.
|
my picks for top 6
1. Best Picture: "Slumdog Millionaire." 2. Actor: Mickey Rourke, "The Wrestler." 3. Actress: Kate Winslet, "The Reader." 4. Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, "The Dark Knight" 5. Supporting Actress: Amy Adams, "Doubt" 6. Director: Danny Boyle, "Slumdog Millionaire." |

I might go see Slumdog Millionare tomorrow night, cheap tickets and Danny Boyle are enticeing, but this is not what I was expecting from him next. And the huge adds on the buss that say "Feel good movie of the decade" are a bit of a put off... But I have to see what it's all about...
As for the most of the other nominated films, I haven't seen them either, there is a few I will in the next few weeks though, such as the wrestler and Gran Torino.. |
I can see Ben Button pulling a Gangs of New York: shitload of nominations, no wins.
|
brilliant!!!!

And the fanboys may rejoice and sing in unison.

Only part I cared to watch. :D
|
I don't put any stock into awards, but it was really disappointing that Rourke didn't walk away with a win.
|
Bleh. Another totally unremarkable Academy Awards ceremony.
I'm really bummed to see Slumdog get everything. |

apparently they can only remmber the last released film. |
Lousy Benjamin Button. I loved when Spike Feresten made that thing revealing that it's pretty much the same movie as Forrest Gump.

if people who are complaining about rourke not winning haven't seen MILK then they should shut it.
i loved rourke in the wrestler but penn was amazing in MILK and in many ways this was a much braver performance for a straight man and an incredibly deep and layered portrayal. i'm not putting rourke's performance down - it is just a pity that two great actors happened to be in the same year. overall, i thought the oscars were fair and just about right on (and thank god benjamin buttons didn't sweep). |
Blah to Milk! This was the Academy making up for not giving it to Heath in 2005 (06?) for Brokeback Mountain, which was an equally deserving and brave performance.
And no I haven't seen it, but blah to Milk anyways! So much hype kills it all for me. :p |
wow - i'm not sure how milk is/was hyped. it is a small film with relatively limited release and Penn got nowhere near the coverage as Rourke for his 'come back' role.
funny how people twist themselves into pretzels trying to rationalize their own opinions |
I don't twist myself into anything. It's effortless. Milk was just as talked about as The Wrestler, and just as over-hyped as Mickey Rourke's great "comeback". It's been weeks and weeks of all tabloids, gossip websites, news websites, etc... talking about the race for best actor between Rourke and Penn.
Please inform as to which rock you live under so I may shield myself next time. ;) |

I've seen Milk, and as I said, I'm disappointed Rourke didn't win. I thought he gave the better performance out of the two. Not only that, but I don't think Penn was any better than Brolin, which, don't get me wrong, were two great performances. They just weren't up there with Rourke, in my opinion. |
Brolin was better than Penn in Milk IMO

I saw both Milk and The Wrestler, and I think Rourke's performance was better.

Slumdog Millionaire sure did rack most of the Oscars up last night. And I'm not irate by that all--Slumdog Millionaire was a great film, and screenplay.
Most of my favorites got nominations and a few awards (MILK, Frost-Nixon, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Wrestler) I was a little disappointed Frost-Nixon didnt win any awards at all--correct me if I'm wrong guys but I didn't recall it did. I haven't seen The Wrestler yet, but I've read tons of reviews and I'm sure Rourke did a great job--not sure if he does one as masterfully as the hype about it has been though. Anyway, I predicted because of such hype Rourke would win and if not Sean Penn--and I was right. I was kinding hoping that Rourke wouldn't win--nothing against him, but my fear was that he would win solely because of the hype--and not because of how phenomenal his performance was. I do commend him for his comeback and wish the best of him and his caree though. I thought the best actor nominations though this year had worthy competition and when analyzing it--it could've gone either way. Pitt, Penn, Rourke, et al are all excellent in their own right. I'm glad Kate Winslet finally got an Oscar and was a little disappointed by the 1997 oscars that she and Leonardo Dicaprio didn't dominate with Titanic as expected. The Reader was good, but I also would've liked it if she got another one for another favorite of mine: Revolutionary Road--it certainkly didn't have the budget or ostentation as Titanic, but Decaprio and Winlset were in my opinon, excellent in this as well. Another shocker to me for the action category. Will SMith is a good actor as well and has made a reputaution for having summer block-buster hits. If Seven Pounds didn't do as well, I thought certainly Hancock would give The Dark Knight some competition on the action category. I will say though , I am glad Valkerie didn't receive any nominations.:D I did not like this movie. I'm not a big Tom Cruise fan--and nothing against his abilities, but I don't think the film itself had any substance. It kinda left me with a "Okay....so what [else] ?" effect. You guys may disagree, but hey it's cool. What do you guys think? |

Perhaps its just me, but I haven't heard much "hype" regarding the wrestler at all. Most people I ask about say they haven't seen/haven't heard about it, however I did leave the US while it was only out it select theaters.
another thing that disappointed me about this years Oscars is that Springsteen's brilliant song he did for the wrestler didn't get a nomination, whilst that garbage song from Slumdog won. |
has anyone said fuck the oscars yet? fuck the oscars.

i've been saying it for 20 years. this year it changed to "fuck the oscars up its hemeroid infested fat white ass" |
Pretty predictable year...the only real surprise was Waltz with Bashir not winning in Best Foreign Language Film. I wasn't really expecting Penn to take Best actor, but it wasn't really a huge shocker - it is Sean Penn, after all. I can't really weigh in on whether or not he deserved it over Rourke - haven't had the chance to see Milk or The Wrestler - but I can say that it must have been one Hell of a performance: Jenkins and Langella were both incredible, and even though it was pretty overrated, it's hard to deny that Pitt was very good in Benjamin Button. Best Actor was a great race this year, for sure.
But I have to say my favourite moment of the night was Philippe Petit accepting the award for Man on Wire. Great speech, and balancing the Oscar on his chin was priceless :D . |

See What the Critics Are Saying! : Roger Ebert "The performance of a lifetime... Mickey Rourke may win the Oscar. One of the year's best films." Entertainment Weekly "Darren Aronofsky's WRESTLER is the best movie of the year. Fierce, tender, gripping and altogether remarkable." Newsweek "Witness the resurrection of Mickey Rourke in Darren Aronofsky's deeply affecting film." Rolling Stone "You watch THE WRESTLER in a state of pure exhilaration. Marisa Tomei is flat-out fabulous." New York Magazine "A career capper for Rourke, and it's virtually impossible to imagine anyone else playing the part." Variety "A galvanizing, humorous, deeply moving portrait that takes its place among the great, iconic screen performances" Like I said, I haven't seen it yet---I'm not sure if this hype is going to be a turn-off for me to check it out, or motivation. |
