HI have you heard of these movies ?

IF you have please give me your opinions

the pyx
my bloody vengance
combat shock

The Ghastly 12-27-2008 01:06 AM

I've only heard of Combat Shock. It's a Troma film released in 1986 about a war vet who returns home to a cranky wife, an alien-looking baby, and no job. Oh yeah, and his best friend is a junkie. Some dudes start kicking his ass so he goes on a rampage after them. It was pretty good from what I remember.

Rodus 12-27-2008 08:30 AM

I think The Pyx was a Christopher Plummer movie from the 80's, I'm pretty sure there's a write up on it in Allan Bryce's Video Nasties 2. You can get it from Amazon.
Combat Shock was directed by Buddy Giovanni and was also seized a few times in the 80's in the UK as being liable (in the eyes of the Plod) to deprave and corrupt.

The_Return 12-27-2008 10:58 AM

Haven't seen it myself, but I've heard good things about The Pyx. Sounds like a pretty cool show.

Phalanx 12-28-2008 12:41 AM

He's the guy, yeah.
YEAH!

Ok, not sure if I've seen his stuff...lemme check...
Eh, not reading through THAT many "lets put 10 titles on a film" in imdb.

His DANGER - DIABOLIK, that anything to do with the old comic about the supertheif guy?

Rodus 12-28-2008 02:10 AM

Yes he's good, Black Sunday being a personal favorite.

Ferox13 12-28-2008 03:27 AM

Yes..

For starters watch Black Sunday - Blood and Black Lace - Bay of Blood.

This will give you 3 very different aspects of the guys style.

Phalanx 12-28-2008 03:41 AM

I'll see if I can track those down.
Although, I'll probably see diabolik first.
That remonds me, I liked the animated series of that too, might look while I'm at it.

hahaha - In truth, I'm not a huge Giallo fan, though I think that I should get some Bava in my system...

What's a good place to start?

_____V_____ 12-28-2008 08:34 AM

Well, Blood and Black Lace and Black Sunday are must-sees, to tee off. The former proudly sits in my All-Time Top 10 in Horror.

Then move on to Black Sabbath and Bay of Blood. Also, The Whip And The Body, Kill Baby...Kill!, and Baron Blood.

If you can, get the two boxsets on Bava. Its a sweet deal, and I am sure you can afford it.

Actually, less than 50% of his good stuff is giallo- you'd definately be able to get into him.

Watch Black Sunday and Black Sabbath, in that order, and you'll have a great jumping off point.

The_Return 12-28-2008 10:22 AM

Even though he didn't direct it himself (he did the cinematography for Riccardo Freda), I'd suggest I Vampiri for a budding Bava fan - very stylish and cool movie, mostly due to his input.

ChronoGrl 12-28-2008 05:27 PM

Thanks, guys. I've put Black Sunday and Black Sabbath into the Netflix queue. :D

Doc Faustus 12-28-2008 06:30 PM

The second Bava box is uneven, the first one is incredible. I actually wouldn't have gotten the second one were it not for the kickass Anchor Bay buy one get one sale at the Deep Discount store. I totally agree with Whip and the Body too and I'd like to add Hercules in the Haunted World and Hatchet for a Honeymoon.

nicklord1 12-29-2008 01:43 AM

Hi could you sum up bavas style of making movies . As itallian horror are either very good or very very dull.

nicklord1 12-29-2008 01:54 AM

body count ?

Hi anyone seen this 80s slasher

Elvis_Christ 12-29-2008 02:04 AM

I was quite disappointed with it. I was looking at it sitting on my shelf and thought it might be time to give it another spin seeing as I recently watched House On The Edge Of The Park and dug it. I've always been a big fan of Cut and Run too so I'll give it chance and see if my opinion has changed.

neverending 12-29-2008 02:34 AM

That's a gross oversimplification. Not every Italian director of horror movies makes the same type of movies- as has been mentioned in this thread itself, even Bava makes different types of movies. They're not all the same. Bloody hell- just go watch a few. Is your time that precious you can't spend a few hours watching movies?

nicklord1 12-29-2008 08:46 AM

cut and run is good is your version the rare uncut one

Ferox13 12-29-2008 11:36 AM

Yeah smae with Bodycount though i seen it ages ago and it may have been cut.

Actually with Cut and Run some scenes had 2 versions of some scene.

Elvis_Christ 12-29-2008 02:45 PM

^^ I was thinking mine could be cut too. But after watching Off Balance it might not be because that was fairly tame compared to his more extreme stuff.

Yeh dude I've got a uncut version of it and the edited Australian VHS with the double sided cover.

nicklord1 12-30-2008 01:47 AM

if i remember correctly the uncut scene was when the reporters went in to the home after a gang murder and they filmed the after affects.

Ferox13 12-30-2008 02:32 AM

Also the atack on t he boat near the start..

I think Video Watchdog did a whole comparison articles many moons ago..

LOL - I just looked it up - they did that article in their first issue that was 18 years ago - I cannot fathom how I remember reading an article nearly 20 years ago but can't recall what I did last weekend..

The Mothman 12-30-2008 09:29 PM

Combat Shock's the only one Ive heard of. caught a trailer somewhere, seems pretty dark, especially for a troma film.

crabapple 01-01-2009 08:36 AM

Bava, "any good"? Ah, but he's one of the very best. Go check out his movies...

My faves are Danger: Diabolik, Black Sabbath, Black Sunday, Baron Blood, Hercules in the Haunted World. All fine movies. Bava's stylized atmosphere lighting has been copied by everyone.

Elvis_Christ 01-02-2009 01:59 AM

Shock is one of the best ghost/haunting flicks I've seen. Really fuckin' creepy in parts with some amazing atomosphere.

I really need to pick up a copy of Kidnapped. Everything of his I've seen has been brilliant with the exception of Kill Baby Kill which I just didn't get into.

The documentry in the Umbrella Entertainment boxset is a interesting watch. I'm not sure if its included in the sets V mentioned but its worth tracking down.

Elvis_Christ 01-02-2009 02:04 AM

Troma just distributed it. Combat Shock is sitting in big pile of stuff I haven't got round to watching yet... I really need to catch up on a bunch of shit. Heard its a great film.

nicklord1 01-04-2009 12:20 AM

Good but less well known slashers ?

Hi i love slashers and i was wondering if we could compile list of decent but not well known slashers so we can all dig them out and watch them.

Please dont add classics like friday 13th and halloween or giallo of argento .

I will start off by thinking when i watched just before dawn and intruder that they were pretty good.

Over to you

Elvis_Christ 01-04-2009 12:31 AM

Yeh dude Intruder is a kingshit flick!

The Mutilator is one of the better lesser known slashers. American Nightmare and Stage Fright would fit into this category too.

Most of the ones that come to mind are pretty well known.

nicklord1 01-04-2009 12:43 AM

elvis i am glad you enjoyed intruder and i will have to check out your proposals.

Visiting hours although main stream had its moments

nicklord1 01-04-2009 12:44 AM

VHS horror ?

IS it just me or did videos with their grainy quality add a little atmosphere to the movie . DVD seems to polished but of course we must get them as VHS will be totally dead in the next decade.
