Could you write that in english for dummies? I have no idea what your last line means?

And I won't explain why some regulars would make up a fake profile. You'll just jump right ahead and do it, troublemaker.

Whatever do you mean?:)

The last line:
You are from Denmark, referred to as "Danish", and there is a pastry called a danish.

I think it's a false alarm. I'm a member of HDC because I'm less than savvy about horror. Is that really alarming?

It's not the lack of savvy for horror, but the lack of savvy of how to act on a forum that's scaring people about the new members.

monster123 10-19-2008 11:41 AM

I really enjoy this forum. I dont post enough quit yet but its because im busy. I hope i havent come off as savvy?

psst: "savvy" is a good thing ;)...It means you know some things about something...That you're familiar with it

Seriously, is it always the new members?

Statements made about one's lack of savvy are merely opinions which are sometimes shared by those who don't always make the right choices. This is also just an opinion. My opinion.

I don't always make the right choices. As humans, we all make mistakes. That's a fact. I can easily admit that.

I've rewritten this post many times so it won't be misunderstood. I'm not singling anyone out. I'm just making a statement here, not trying to offend anyone. If it is misunderstood, please PM me.

Well, once you're not a new member anymore, you pretty much know what you're doing. So yes, it is.

As I want to continue looking for the good in others, I will just say that I've decided that you mean no harm and that you're not directing your comments at me or singling anyone out.

I have been a new member at other forums and I was accepted. Most were message boards meant to be used for the support of others with the same experiences, i.e. others who could understand and identify with each other.

I came to HDC hoping to meet other people who are interested in horror and to find out as much as I can about it. I'm just different in that I want to read individual reviews of movies you've all seen. Hence, my poll about directors and movies. I don't know too many yet. I hope that helps. PM me if you wish. :)

Oh, please, brother, let’s not get all preachy and dramatic. The brief time I’ve been here, I’ve seen new members attacked too many times to count. It all begins at the welcome mat. And progresses into every thread a new member posts in. True, some of the attacks are valid. People SHOULD read before posting. I do(as a matter of fact, I’ve read possibly more of this forum than a lot of Lifers have). I also read what I’m replying to, and double check to make sure I’m not reading anything into that post that really isn’t there. I make sure I post in the right area of the forum. And although I do crack jokes a bit, I also try to give serious responses to some topics. But some of you jump on a nOObs ass mercilessly, as if they’d just shot your dog, for every little screw-up. I have seen more infractions( serious ones) of standard forum practice performed by Lifers, than by nOObs. And the Lifers get away with it because they can(or at least think they can).

One member posts a pic that basically says STFU! almost every other day, always directed at a nOOb. I posted a thread with a few simple questions in it, yesterday, and got a barrage of bullshit. Other nOObs get the same thing(although some of the nOObs should ease up on starting threads, until they have really read the place better). Understandable that some of them get bent out of shape(although I think Scarilady was a little bent from the gate).

The difference between me and some of the other nOObs is, I can roll with the punches, and I give back as good as I get. If you treat me like dirt(no matter how well you sugar coat it), candy-covered dirt is what you shall receive. I’m not vindictive(if I was, I would have posted some kind of nasty comments in some of those private threads you Lifers hang out in, like Post Your Pic), and I do understand when someone’s just jerking me. I have a fairly sick sense of humor, myself. And there are Lifers who have a bit of a connection with me now(or, at least not ragging on me, every chance they get), so there is hope that, somewhere down the line, we can all be civil to each other. But others do not expect the hazing. And weren’t expecting it, minutes into the place. They came because they like the films, or want to learn more. Or just looking to talk(about anything).

I forgive these blatant flame tactics(by various Lifers) if they have shown a knowledge, presence or participation, in what this forum is all about, or have shown me that they possess reasonable intelligence. But there are some Lifers who haven’t posted one intelligent thing on this forum since I’ve joined, and the bulk of their posting is either here in Off-topic or at the Welcome Wagon. And usually argumentative. It’s all in your profiles. Some members rarely go beyond those 2 forums, but when they do, it’s usually to say something innocuous like “I liked it too!” or “Have you seen….is it any good?”(Crikey, go out and see the damn thing and tell us what YOU think). They seem to have no other purpose here, than to let everyone know the importance of being them.

I have even asked a few Lifers(thru PM) to back down, as they were obviously stepping over the line. Their replies basically told me to Fuck off. Which tells me that they are here to flame, and nothing more. And whether you have 50 posts or 50,000, you’re a troll if that’s your attitude. And if some of you old timers think that’s ”how to act on a forum” , then maybe you should be scared of what you’ve become.

Try acting more like a human, and less like the PC you’re typing on.

urgeok2 10-19-2008 03:00 PM

I agree with a lot of the above ..

I dont go for giving new people crap - unless they are so impossibly fucked they just act like a cancer on the forum.
I like new people joining ... i like fresh perspectives, new blood..

I dont mind people making new threads in the general forum ... as far as i'm concerned people can do what they want there unless it involves racist, sexist, or homophobic remarks.

outside of that it takes something pretty fucking special for me to get pissed off ... and i believe we had some of that.

a lot of people consider this place to be a family .. i dont.
I have some folks here i enjoy joking around with and i like the movie discussion outside of the general forums - but i'll drop this place like a bad habit the minute it doesn't feel right to me.

The last little while there's been a lot of what i feel personally to be a lot of negative energy.

If i'm pissed - I'll say what i have to say and that'll be the end of it - the ignore button works just fine. If people seem to think what's going on is acceptable behavior - then it's time to move on.

i dont agree with noob bashing .. i think it's pointless. i dont believe in mean spirited sniping as well.

i also dont care for smug over confidence from someone waltzing into a new place trying to tell everyone else how to run the forum they've spent years in. I hate eye rolling smileys...

i would think that if someone had so many problems with a place they'd turn around and leave - thats what i would do - and i've done it. I'm not an internet forum crusader looking to better the world one address at a time.

I would figure - hey - these guys are assholes and head off somewhere else.

not sure what your motivation is at this point.

if you're concerned about acting more human ... you might want to drop the Pope routine ... and the eye rolling smileys in every reply to things you dont like.

you dont like your threads derailed in general ? gee whiz .. that's just terrible .. it happens all the time. sure a couple of people seem to be bothered by it - but most dont - and everyone who's been here more than a couple of weeks lives with it and usually has fun with it.

i know you think you've figured out the culture of the place in the valuable time you've spent here .. but maybe there are some positive things that have been going on here for a longer time than you've been a participant.

i'm not about to get involved in a war with this .. it;'s just my 2 cents.

i'm getting a real deva vu feeling lately ... which is too bad because i've really enjoyed that last few months since i returned - until lately.

i hope people chill .. i hope some others grow up or get out - and i hope others yet - learn how to relax and let the mods handle whats going on.

we all have the option to leave when this place stops being what we want

I think that was very well said (for whatever my opinion is worth).

I barely have the guts (or the patience) to stand up to some of the older members anymore, even though I've been here for a while now myself. I just get a bunch of crap if I try to defend myself and frankly, it's just not worth the stress it has caused me. But I really do think people need to look in the mirror a bit more and not be so busy pointing the finger at everyone else. Like I've said before, we ALL make mistakes. And no one is perfect and never will be. Learn from your mistakes and try not to repeat them. If I sound like broken record with that, TFB.

As I've said countless times before, I've got no interest in changing this place at all. Or telling anybody what to do. And if those directories are what is giving everybody the all-over fidgies, why not put them to a vote. Yea they stay, nay they get replaced with comical pictures of Julie Andrews. It wont bother me(I've seen my work go down the tubes before).

Pope routine???? You'll have to expand on that one. Unless you mean I don't write like a knuckle dragger.

As far as smileys, some people don't understand what tone I'm saying things in, without them. 2 schools of thought. You may not like them, but some do. I'll try to remember you don't.*

*no smileys were harmed in the making of this post.**

Actually, I was thinking that might be a fun little Halloween activity- coralling the porn spammers into the Database and tearing them a new one. I mean, it is a holiday!

they wouldn't care. they'll probably never visit this site again. they just sign up, make their hit, then move on to the next forum. now if we could track them down personally, and coral them all into a room with the rest of us, that might be an interesting activity.

I think the things that V, Flayed and others have done to the forum and the efforts of our mods to clean up the streets has made us xenophobic and overprotective. I've seen only good intentions and friendliness from Leprucky Cougar, though her exuberance was scary, I see only the defense of a person who feels persecuted in Nella's post, which escalates into hostility, which makes some of us feel persecuted because of difficulties we or others might have had. This is particularly because it's just defense mechanism versus defense mechanism and no ill intentions are involved, except possibly in those who simply believe this place is cozy as it is and if these furriners come in here wearing red and dancin' on Sundays, then we might just have ourselves a witch problem. Did we authorize that lawn gnome? Is their mailbox regulation distance from the curb? The forum got the way you people like it by being inclusive and being a serious community that talks about horror and can have fun on its downtime. If we banned every newb that responded to old members with hostility every time they were attacked or saw others attacked, this place would be pretty small. I, for one would be gone and I'd like to think I tend towards being a pretty productive member. I've participated and argued my way through the last couple of the top lists, even heading up one of those projects. I've contributed blurbs and try to be generally helpful. There are some who do not and still are trying to drive a wedge between the forum and any new members who come about. In Festered, we have somebody with real enthusiasm for the genre who is willing to help out with new eyes and fresh perspective, Leprucky means well and wants to get to know everyone, Nella is a rarity. She's a new member who doesn't know much and actually wants to LEARN. Imagine if every clod who comes in posting 'Jasin roolz. I want some Jasin muvees. How bout Saw? If Jasin and Jigsaw got in a fit who wood win, bitchez?" stayed around to contribute and pick up some culture. That'd be good for fandom and good for all of us. Everything Urgeok said earlier was also dead on.

Yes! And what would Mr. Spock do in a situation like this? And is Han Solo cooler than Captain Kirk? Answer me that, bat-brain! ;)
