Green Lantern has found his leading lady and she’s a Gossip Girl.
Blake Lively will play Carol Ferris, the daughter of aerospace mogul Carl Ferris. She runs her father’s company and winds up hiring Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds) as a test pilot and, of course, falls for him. In the comics their relationship hits a wall when she becomes the #1 at the company and an alien race dubs her the new Star Sapphire. Back in December we told you about the final five for the role, which included Lively as well as Eva Green, Keri Russell, Diane Kruger and Jennifer Garner. THR mentions that even the filmmakers were aware of the fact that Lively was a little young for the role, but they were so overwhelmed by her performance in The Town that they had to go for her. Between Gossip Girl, Accepted and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movies, Lively didn’t have the range to expand herself beyond playing a mindless pretty blond girl. That all changed after The Private Lives of Pippa Lee. Not that the role of Carol Ferris is expected to require much range, but at least we know she’s capable of expanding beyond her norm. Next on director Martin Campbell’s casting list? The villainous genius Dr. Hector Hammond and the evil alien Sinestro. Shooting is scheduled to kick of in March in Louisiana putting the film on track for a June 17th, 2011 release. |
...and after that horrendous news, here's some awesomeness to make up for it:

Two words: Fucking. Awesome. |
With the reports earlier this week that Peter Saarsgard is in talks to play villain Hector Hammond in Martin Campbell's Green Lantern, there's been a certain amount of speculation about whether Lantern uber-villain Sinestro will play a role. Yes, is the answer, and the word on the street is that Warners are only interested in one actor for the role:
it's Rorschach himself, Jackie Earle Haley. It's a rumour that's been floating around for a while, and Haley himself denied all knowledge last year. But Hitfix have been "making some phonecalls" and have learned that, following Watchmen and A Nightmare on Elm Street, Haley is currently seriously in favour at WB. Sinestro was certainly featured in last year's casting call, and as the character starts out as a mentor for Hal Jordan, attaining villainhood later on, it's reasonable to assume that his might be a supporting role in part one, setting up bigger things in hoped-for sequels. Time will tell, and if Haley is more in the loop than he was last autumn, and preparing to polish his yellow ring, he's revealing nothing so far. Green Lantern does, however, definitely star Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, and goes before the cameras soonish, for a summer 2011 release. |
Casting news on Martin Campbell’s The Green Lantern continues to crystallize. While we had heard a rumor awhile back that Jackie Earle Haley might be in talks to play Green Lantern’s arch-nemesis, Sinestro, it now looks as though that isn’t, nor was it ever, the case.
MTV recently caught up with Campbell while during a junket for his upcoming thriller, Edge of Darkness, and popped the question to Campbell about Sinestro. According to Campbell: No, that’s completely wrong…In fact, we’re in negotiations with Mark Strong to play Sinestro…He’s not only a wonderful actor, but he looks like Sinestro. If you look up old pictures of Sinestro, he’s very like him. The Jackie Earle Haley thing, somebody told me about it this morning; I had never heard it before in my life. Makes sense. Sinestro is an intellectual first and foremost, and his corruption comes about because he is so determined to protect his own people. He becomes obsessed with power, control, and punishment. In other words, he's the kind of villain Strong excels at playing -- men whose brains equal or exceed their physical capabilities. Campbell also provided details about which other characters will be in the film: Well, Kilowog (a loveable bulldoggy alien) will be in it…Tomar-Re (a loveable bird-like alien) is in it. Sinestro is in it. Abin Sur is in it. All the origin people. Carol [Ferris], of course, who will be played by Blake Lively. All the main characters are there, and it’s a complex story. The origin story of Green Lantern is complex, probably one of the most complex, which makes it a challenge to get it right. Seems like a pretty ambitious cast of characters to fit into one film. Recent origin stories have been able convincingly execute the dynamics of an ensemble cast of comic boook characters, but never without making at least one or two of them rather one-note. We’ll see how Campbell handles the juggling act. What is undeniable is that Strong’s career deservedly continues to flourish. The man is undoubtedly watchable, and he truly revels in the evil/sliminess of his characters. This film adds another potential franchise to Strong’s resume; he was in Sherlock Holmes this winter and will next be seen in Kick-Ass in March, with Pixar’s John Carter of Mars up next on his production schedule. All things considered (and Blake Lively's youth aside), Lantern is shaping up to have one heck of a cast, particularly on its darker side. |
I'm not sure but is Ryan Reynolds the only actor who got the chance to play more than one comic book character on screen? Hannibal King, then Deadpool and now Green Lantern!?! I think this makes him bit overrated...there are lots of better actors to play GL, anyways it's just my personal opinion.
|
Agreed.
While he surprised me in Smokin' Aces, there's far better people more suited to the role. |
|
Really hoping that's a fan poster.

The credits are wrong, the mask looks photoshopped and the title font is just an edited version of the one they used for the animated "First Flight" last year. I don't have time at the moment, but I bet 5 minutes worth of Googling could turn up an identical pic of Reynolds. Maybe it's just wishful thinking because it's such a terrible poster, but I'm calling fake. |
The adventures of a superhero named "Green Lantern" date back to the publication of All-American Comics #16, published in July 1940, making the character nearly as old as the first superhero, Superman. The original Green Lantern was named Alan Scott and his powers derived from a magic ring and lantern that gave him incredible abilities. When the appeal of the character — and the superhero genre in general — waned in the late '40s, his comic book was canceled. However, the name would live again in the '50s with the creation of Green Lantern Hal Jordan, who also wielded a power ring and lantern, but whose abilities derived from science.
Though they may have different alter-egos, costumes, origins, and weaknesses, what unites the two disparate Green Lanterns is their power ring. The ring bestows many abilities to the user, including flight, telepathy, power blasts, and others, but the trademark ability of the ring has always been the creation of "solid-light" or "solid-energy" constructs limited only by the imagination and will power of the ring wielder. In many older comic books, Green Lantern typically created simple constructs with the ring, such as a giant pair of scissors or a giant boxing glove, but as comic book readers have become more sophisticated, so have Green Lantern's constructs. In a typical modern issue of Green Lantern, Hal Jordan may use his ring to create anything from a Tyrannosaurus Rex to an F-22 Raptor fighter jet. Since the announcement that Warner Bros. was developing a live-action Green Lantern, fans of the character have been speculating about whether this ability will be featured in the movie. Any doubt that director Martin Campbell might opt to feature Green Lantern's more pedestrian powers can now be laid to rest. While doing press for his latest movie, Edge of Darkness, Campbell revealed to MTV that this ability will be actualized in the movie. Campbell even gained some comic-nerd cred by correcting the interviewer's inaccurate use of the word "object" to describe the creations. Quote:

Tomorrow marks the first official day of filming for director Martin Campell’s long-awaited 3D Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan and Mark Strong as Sinestro.
The film has been in pre-production in New Orleans for several weeks and the first scene will be filmed tomorrow and through the 17th on location at the Old Point Bar, according to OnLocationVacations. DC’s CCO Geoff Johns recently visited the set and praised both actors, saying “Ryan IS Hal, and Mark Strong is going to be a brilliant Sinestro.” It’s hard not to be excited for the movie with such awesome casting, including Peter Sarsgaard as Jordan’s rival Hector Hammond, Blake Lively as Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire, and Tim Robbins as Senator Hammond. Ryan Reynolds will also play Deadpool in the upcoming X-Men spinoff of the same name, and Mark Strong most recently starred as Lord Blackwood opposite Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes. Green Lantern is slated for release on June 17th, 2011. Martin Campbell reached out to New Zealand for two new casting choices – Temuera Morrison and Taika Waititi. Waititi – who wrote, directed and acted in Eagle Vs Shark – is playing the best mate of Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), the test pilot who ends up inheriting the super-powered ring worn by members of the Green Lantern Corps. Morrison, still probably best known as Jango Fett from the Star Wars prequels, has an even more instrumental role – he’s Abin Sur, the Lantern who crashes on Earth and who passes that same ring to Jordan so that he might protect the planet. It’s still not known whether Lantern will be shot in 3D or undergo the conversion process ala Clash Of The Titans. In case you aren’t familiar with Green Lantern, there’s a ton of backstory to the character. The first thing to know is that Green Lanterns are like intergalactic police, and they get their abilities from power rings that have to be charged every 24 hours. The first Green Lantern was Alan Scott, an engineer who created the first of the magic rings. Hal Jordan is the second Green Lantern. Jordan was a second-generation test pilot who was given the ring by Abin Sur, an alien who chose him because of his strength and honesty. Hal Jordan was a founder of the Justice League of America and was one of two Green Lanterns that patrolled the area surrounding Earth. |

Scott is from a different "age/reality" and his magic based ring while bearing the same name and a similar power set, is really nothing to do with the "current" set of Green Lantern/s, and their while galactic police bit. Incidentally though, both Scott & Jordan now occupy the same "universe" - Though I doubt very much they'll give too much mention to Scott. |
Martin Campbell has increased the cast complement of Green Lantern by one, adding Angela Bassett.
She’s signed on to play Dr Amanda Blake Waller, who has a chequered history in the DC Universe, having run shady organisations like the Suicide Squad, which had super villains working for the government in exchange for amnesty. Though she’s also a government agent, chances are she’ll end up causing trouble for Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds). Green Lantern is shooting right now in New Orleans with Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Tim Robbins and Blake Lively. |
Everyone is curious to see what Ryan Reynolds will look like in costume in the big screen adaptation of DC Comics’ Green Lantern. Production started earlier this month in New Orleans, and while the first set photos have begun to hit the web — don’t expect to see Reynolds in the green suit.
Not today, not next week, not next month, not ever. So don’t expect to see any leaked shots of Reynolds in the actual suit until Warner Bros makes the official full reveal. Why not? Well, because there isn’t a suit. No suit? That’s right. No suit. The suit that Ryan wears on set is a grey tracking motion/performance capture suit with led lights. The Green Lantern suit you will see in the final film will be almost entirely created using computers. That’s right — Green Lantern’s suit will be mostly CG! Warner Bros assures that the suit will look cool. Don’t let the words “Computer generated” scare you. Ngila Dickson, the costumer designer on the film has won an Academy Award for a little film called The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. She worked on the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Last Samurai (another film which earned her an Oscar nomination), The Illusionist, Blood Diamond and The International. Ngila was tasked with trying to find a way to do something that stands apart from all of the other superheroes spandex suit designs we’ve seen in the past. Remember, the Green Lantern suit is something that should look alien — it needs to seem other worldly. It encompasses any creature that wears the ring, and Hal Jordan is the first human to ever wear the suit. This was a chance for Dickson to do something different. You also have to consider that Hal changes into the suit multiple times in mid scene, and the cg also allows him to do this. Apparently, the suit will look like, “a manifestation of [Reynolds' character, Hal Jordan's] power.” The CG also means we won’t get our first official look at the suit until Warner Bros. gives the go-ahead to release a fully-rendered image. So there you have it. The film world’s first almost fully CGI superhero suit. Peter Sarsgaard, who plays the villain of the film Hector Hammond, has wild hair, “like Jason Lee in My Name is Earl” combined with the character’s pencil-thin moustache from the comics. Green Lantern is set to hit theaters June 17, 2011. |

If you’re the kind of fan who, without question, needs to catch the very first full “Green Lantern” trailer, you may want to befriend a few muggles.
Fresh from New York Comic Con and currently echoing within the comic and movie blogosphere is the news that the hotly anticipated “Green Lantern” trailer will be attached to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1,” the second-to-last film in the Harry Potter series set to debut on November 19, 2010. “Green Lantern” scribe and DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns made the announcement at the DC Entertainment Panel, perhaps to acknowledge (as early as possible) the hope of many an attending fan that Warner Bros. might release a teaser trailer at some point during the con. Alas, like Thanksgiving, the sight of Ryan Reynolds’ sweet smooth green jammies will have us waiting until November. Here's the film's official synopsis, courtesy of the new "Green Lantern" website: Quote:

Pretty much confirms my initial thoughts: Blake Lively sucks ass, but otherwise this looks amazing. What they showed of Oa looks breathtaking - fingers crossed they spend more time there than on Earth.

But no worries. Usually the movies which have sucky trailers are pretty fantastic (maybe the makers don't want to reveal too much in this). I am ready to get my ass kicked when I finally see it. :) |
