AH! Eraserhead? Swingers? The Godfather? I can't read this thread anymore!

:(

Oh damn I forgot to add Full metal jacket and The shining, Kubrick is the most overrated director of all time.

knife_fight 02-22-2007 04:39 AM

I disagree with the majority of these, but two that I agree with are Scarface and Gladiator. I don't think Scarface is boring or too long, I just didn't really like it too much.

and Gladiator (or any of those dumbass epics), I mean come on! that movie may be mindless fun for dudes, but as far as being a "good" movie it doesn't come close to half the movies listed here as overrated.

You laughed your ass off at Jaws? You bastard  ;)

The Flayed One 02-22-2007 07:55 AM

If we're going for any genre of movie, I'm going to have to add E.T. and Forrest Gump.

E.T. was just kind of boring (saw it in the theater when I was a wee pup, think I fell asleep) Watched it again several times trying to find the charm. Just can't do it.

As far as Forrest Gump goes, this well may be what I consider the absolute most over-rated film of all time. Others I can see peoples points in.

E.T. - I can see how people consider this a magical movie. Just didn't do it for me.

Scream - Like I said before: almost every part was ruined for me. I still didn't really care for it the second time around, but slasher movies aren't a genre I care for much humor in. Nice gore, though.

Jurassic Park - Dinosaurs are cool. I'll be the first to admit the FX are amazing. It was built up for me as an absolutely terrifying movie, and it just wasn't in any way. I really didn't even find it suspensful. I think that's the problem with a lot of people who saw Exorcist after hearing years of hype. Creepy, maybe. Utterly terrifying? Not in my opinion.

Jaws - Same thing as Jurassic Park, but a tad before my time.

Forrest Gump - No redeeming qualities. Not funny. No touching. Not good. Add Tom Hanks to make one great big shit sandwich.

Didn't enjoy Gump either, and I personally didn't like American Beauty much.

alkytrio666 02-22-2007 12:08 PM

Yeah, Forrest Gump is a movie I find utterly boring. Dull as hell, completely over-hyped.

I try not to jump on people's opinions...after all, they are opinions.
But Kubrick certainly isn't the most overrated directors of all time. I'd go so far as to say he's underrated.

Doc Faustus 02-22-2007 12:40 PM

Kubrick's problem doesn't have enough respect for other people's material. Yes, according to George Steiner's linguistics text After Babel, enhancement can be an important part of translation, but Kubrick prioritizes enhancement OVER translation. His adaptations don't take the original into consideration enough. His Shining camps up the story of a child in jeopardy to the point at which it loses a lot of the frightening aspects. Doctor Strangelove is incredible. A Clockwork Orange is a noble effort, but one that doesn't give the viewer an opportunity to explore the moral questions native to its setting, instead choosing to give a pretty straight answer to them. It's visually stunning, it's well acted, but it's easy. The answers are too pat. He asks "is it bad to take personal freedom from anyone, regardless of how bestial they might behave?" and then answers it almost without debate. The message of mankind losing its humanity from Burgess' novel is conveyed well, but there's not a dialogue. Movies should make people think instead of telling them head on what to think. Pretty ironic for a movie like A Clockwork Orange.
As for Gump, it's a maudlin sack of crap that's an insulted to every learning disabled person in America. The idea that a disabled person gains glory by stumbling through life on a blissfully ignorant odyssey through contemporary history is not a humanitarian one, but rather just as backward as thinking SPED kids should be smacked until they concentrate. As a person with a major learning disability, I was told by a teacher that Forrest Gump would be an inspiration, instead I was disgusted. The next time I came to school, I asked the SPED teacher "is THAT what you think my options look like?" If any, the movie should be seen as a barometer for American hypocrisy.
Scream is also terrible. You want a self-informed parody of horror cinema, see Young Frankenstein for a comedy, or Opera for a REAL self-reflective slasher film. People forget that Opera means work, so Argento uses the movie to examine it. The killer's comment "I can take you anytime I want" is far more eloquent than any of the downright scatological metafiction in Scream. Just thought I'd boost a slightly underrated entry on the top 100 lists as I cut into some overrated movies.

Here's my review I wrote after watching it since I don't want to waste any additional time thinking about it.

Eraserhead

After it put me to sleep 3 times, I finally finished Eraserhead and I gotta say I thought it sucked! What a boring and pointless piece of crap! I hate watching a film and then feeling like I just wasted a couple hours of my life afterwards and that is how I feel about this one. It gave me nothing. I don't like movies that are weird just for the sake of being weird. There's no real gore, the story purposely makes no sense, and it just was not entertaining in the slightest. I hated it and it's heading to the bottom of my list where I keep Phantasm, Fulci and all the other over-rated films and directors so I remember not to watch them ever again.

D-

I can agree with Suspiria too. I didn't think it was very impressive. And pretty much any Fulci film I've seen has been highly over-rated as well.

To be completely honest, I don't think evil dead's are great either. The second one was funny the first time I saw it, but now only 3 little parts are, and its way too corny, even though meant to be, for my taste. The first one was good, but I just don't care for it that much.

Despare 02-22-2007 06:07 PM

As far as a movie that I like but feel is way overrated... Braindead. I dug the movie, I own it and have watched it plenty of times, but I feel it gets a wee bit too much praise.

It seems like this is a major issue as far as enjoyment of a film goes. I don't think it really has any bearing on how I feel about a film UNLESS that hype comes with a spoiler that ruins the ending.

That is true, hype definitly become a factor. I was expecting much better then what I got which I thought was an ok film, not horrible in any means but didn't stand out as a masterpiece for me.

Another huge factor is that watching this movies 20/30 years after its release they seem cliche thanks to the thousands of cookie-cutter movies that used many of the movies ideas. Then, even though the movie pioneered some techniques and came out before these other movies, they seem played out because you have seen them a hundred times in latter movies.

I can understand that one too. Halloween was probably the first slasher I saw and loving it so much then probably impacts how I feel about it now quite a bit.

odelisk 02-22-2007 07:59 PM

I'm not a real big fan of The original Dawn of the Dead. Also, I haven't been found of any movies pre 1965, they just seem too dated and lame to me. Maybe it's because I'm still fairly young...I'm 28.

Akira.
Nice animation (though only "ok by todays standards), but hated the storyline.

I really don't much like Bruce Lee films either.

Platoon, just not all that great IMO...largely boring to me.

And a SHOW that a lot of people seem to like that I just find fucking unfunny and obnoxious, is "arrested development"

If you mean the Dead Alive thing of Braindead and not that weird sci-fi movie, then hell yes. That movie had an amusing kung-fu priest, and fuck all else.
