Four pages into the thread and the tournament has started? Maybe throw in a porno or two for good measure.

Edit: Well that makes 5 pages.

The STE 02-18-2007 06:44 PM

hm? There's only 2 pages by my count

jay o2 waster 02-18-2007 06:46 PM

You must have a bunch of people blocked then sam. Cause it says on mine that this thread is 5 pages long. OR maybe you show more posts per page than mine does. I should change that.

Disease 02-18-2007 06:59 PM

When is it all going to start anyway?

I hate waiting, just kill me now!

The STE 02-18-2007 07:29 PM

This thread's not even a day old, I didn't think of it until last night. Gimme a little while to come up with 256 movies for the tournament, will ya?

Disease 02-18-2007 07:50 PM

how many have you got so far?

At 128 movies, only the obvious made the cut. Of the rest, Unforgiven's the most likely to get added during the expansion

Despare 02-18-2007 08:22 PM

I hope Rashomon made it...

The STE 02-18-2007 08:40 PM

I was actually a bit dissapointed in Rashomon. I was expecting a top 10 movie, and it actually didn't even make my top 100.

But it's still Rashomon, so yeah, it made it.

I loved it, but even out of the few I listed it's not my favorite. I just think it's some amazing storytelling and at least deserves a listing.

The STE 02-18-2007 08:49 PM

while I'm going through movies, I'll post little stats about what I've got so far.

Most represented directors:
Martin Scorsese/Alfred Hitchockc: 6
Akira Kurosawa: 5
several have 2 or 3, including Darren Aronofsky, Yasujiro Ozu, Sergio Leone, Mel Brooks, Quenten Tarantino, and Kevin Smith

Despare 02-18-2007 08:55 PM

I had a list at least ten times longer than the one I posted swimming in my head but there are just so many movies and how good they are is so subjective. I'll be anxious to see the tournament, we should have a HDC top 100 films list heh.

AUSTIN316426808 02-18-2007 08:55 PM

Requiem for A Dream and ??? Didn't know he had anything else of that class.

What about Pi? I prefered it to Requiem personally...

The STE 02-18-2007 09:01 PM

yeah, the other one is Pi. Although I prefer Requiem

AUSTIN316426808 02-18-2007 09:10 PM

Yeah, I agree with that, slipped my mind that it was his. I'm with Sam on the preference though.

I think most people are, I can safely say I'm in the minority with this one. :)

The STE 02-18-2007 09:20 PM

Oh, both movies are great. I actually saw Requiem mostly because of how much I loved Pi (also I was reading the book for a class, and needed the movie for my project).

The Mothman 02-18-2007 09:23 PM

you must add The Untouchables to the list.

The STE 02-18-2007 09:32 PM

Ok, the movies have been chosen and randomized within the genres. Here's how the first two rounds will work:
I'm doing two qualifier rounds. In these two rounds, I'll be posting all of the matches of the round at once, and people vote on all of them. The first two rounds will last for 48-ish hours each. After those two rounds, the tournament will be down to 64 titles, 8 per genre, and the tournament will continue like other tournaments have here in the past. First round's matches will be up momentarily.

well I guess the movie selection was good if there's so many tough matches. Either that or all the good ones got paired up and all the filler got paired up.

and in response to one of Austin's comments: Oh, shit, I didn't even notice that Dollars and Yojimbo got paired up. Seriously, I used the exact same randomizing process I use for all my tournaments.

Re Alkey's "Not Romance" comments: A lot of movies span multiple genres. On stuff like the ones you commented on, I decided that if enough reputable places listed them as Romance then I'd put them under Romance. Those three are on AFI's top 100 romantic movies list, and that was the deciding factor

You've got a nice tourny going on here, I'm excited. :) Plus I'm drunk.
