i hardly think the phrase "bearded pal" is hardly relevant

hell no man !

some of my favorite movies are old school romantic comedies and i'm more than happy to chat about them here ..

i pity anyone (or just blame it on youth) who sticks to the horror genre alone - that would be pathetic.

Titanic was just a bloated mess for me .. i didnt approach the film not wanting to like it - i just let it happen and it really hit me the wrong way ...

i didnt have fun, or find it clever ...

i think i feel the way about it that you do about a lot of the UK stuff you feel misrepresents your part of the world ..
well - in a way - but different

like Miami Vice .. i know at least 3 britts who rushed out to get those boxsets (you zwoti and our old bearded pal) and absolutely dig those shows ... when i always found them to be an embarrasment.

(i did like The Sweeny though )

for a guy who values risk taking in film i'm suprised you liked this one at all

I don't know, Titanic just sails along in its own inoffensive and blockbusting way. Of course it's riddled with trite Hollywood ideals and innacurate historical interpretations (guess some relatives linked to the ship might find this offensive), but unlike the challenging elements of underground exploitation cinema this can be enjoyed without the need to 'confront' the film.

I'll defend any man's right to switch off (no not the TV, comedians) and gaze idly at the box for a few hours while digesting his Christmas lunch - gimme Titanic over Harry Cunting Potter or Pearl Harbour any day.

Standout scenes: the ship going down, it breaking in two, the unfortunates crashing down and bouncing like ragdolls, and, especially, the eerie 'graveyard' where everyone is dead and floating.

Miami Vice is quality for its occasionally meaty storylines, cool music (where are you now Mr Hammer?) and nice atmospherics by Michael Mann.

The Sweeney is classic hardboiled British cop drama, like The Professionals (before it went a bit soft) and Juliet Bravo.

Er... scratch that last one...

:D

any jean claude van dam movie from the eighties and or low budget werewolf/killer shark movies... check out shark attack 3, it has the best line in any movie i've ever seen - some chick: "well, what do we do now?" some dude: "why don't i eat your pussy." that is comedy gold to me!

re switching off .. as previously stated - i've taken a perverse liking to the latest Steven Segal efforts just to watch how they try in vain to hide how fat he is ..

(i will confess to liking harry potter movies though :))

pearl harbour was poop for sure ..

there is no doubt that titanic had some very effective moments .. my gripe was that had it just stuck to the actual reality of the events as they happened it would have been far more gripping.

the one moment in the film i really appreciated was when the people who made it to one end of the ship were hovering straight up in the air over everything below .. and one girl looked into the lead girls eyes as she was slipping ... and there was that crystal clear reality - understanding that they shared that the girl was going to die and there wasnt anything they could do about it ... and she quietly came to terms with it ...

it was a small moment but for me the most effective thing in the whole movie ..

and again.. i'm a big fan of David Warner so it was nice to see him ..

urgeok 06-20-2006 01:05 PM

i wanted to add .. that michael mann was a bad name in my house because of miami vice but i had to bite that down after he consitantly made films i really liked..(the Keep, Manhunter, thief)

Action movies of the 80s, I really dug those mindless blam! blam! blam! stuff...like Chuck Norris's Invasion USA. :D

Then there was cheesy romantic comedies like The Love Bug...I remember the fuzzy wuzzy stuff in that movie.

And I know people ll jump my butt if I name this one, but I really liked Alien vs Predator. As much as everyone hates that movie, I like it, esp cuz I m a big fan of both franchises. The pacing and the plot sucked, but I really dig the action-sequences...

Urge, dont be disappointed in me now :(

Well, liking the action in AVP isn't quite enough to get him to bugger you...

But it nearly is.

;)

urgeok 06-21-2006 10:47 AM

flowers and chocolates would definately seal the deal though !

_____V_____ 06-21-2006 11:44 AM

for urge :-

:p

seriously though, what did you think of AvP? After all the hype, the studio did have the last say in the movie. Instead of a gore-filled Rated-R flick, we had a nice comic-book tale for kids. And to think they had given Alien AND Predator higher Ratings than AvP.

PR3SSUR3 06-21-2006 12:07 PM

I must be the only one who hasn't seen it, and by the sounds of things I am right not to dirty my eyes.

Heavy CGI and RoboCop 3-style diluting of formally violent and blood-drenched characters?

Shudder.

urgeok 06-21-2006 12:18 PM

yeah .. i have to say that i wasnt a fan of AVP .. and this is coming from someone who liked alien 4 ...

i thought it did a disservice to both franchises.

its not so much what it was that was - but what it coul have been.
it was a wasted opportunity - not menacing or dark enough ...

i really didnt understand the choice of the sub arctic location .. i thought Hendrikson was wasted ...

just a lukewarm effort for something that could have been pretty cool.

Did I hear suggestions that Alien Resurrection might not be appreciated in some quarters?

most people hated it .. i really liked it.

(that director can do no wrong in my eyes)

PR3SSUR3 06-21-2006 01:13 PM

Yes the fourth visionary director in the series - so much going on in AR.

City of Lost Children was a bit hard going, but very nice to look at.

_____V_____ 06-21-2006 11:24 PM

After all that happened with Alien 3 (including the much publicised interference by the studios, swapping of directors, scripts, changes galore), it was a relief to see Jean Pierre Jeunet get his say in the 4th installment. And he didnt disappoint, IMO.

I recently downloaded all the (possible) scripts for Alien 3 which were written back then. Some of them were ludicrous, some really good. The best one had to be the one written by William Gibson, to be directed by Ridley Scott.

For those who might be interested in the Scott-Gibson version of Alien 3, click on this :-

Alien 3 - by Ridley Scott and William Gibson

(be sure to read the convo between Bishop and Hicks at the climax)

Back to the topic of this thread, I loved all the jap Godzilla movies. Those were some interesting vs titles, like vs Mothra, vs Mechgodzilla, even vs King Kong. bleh, I loved em! :D

The Remains of the Day...everyone who watched it with me was bored beyond hell, but for some reason I liked it. The butler's point of view, aptly done by Anthony Hopkins...
