all my pixies are on CD ... love that band still ..

Sonic Youth - Dirty was one I forgot to add. Its an album I'm really sick off now because everyone was into it back in the day. There's a lot more to Sonic Youth than that album.

I love the "Fuck Facts" newspaper that comes with Bedtime For Democracy. I think my favorite DKs album is Frankenchrist, I missed out on a really nice copy with the banned H.R Geiger insert not to long ago. I saw a really nice copy of La Sexorxisto for sale on "glow in the dark" yellow vinyl but the guy wanted several hundred dollars for it  I miss my vinyl collection at times it was starting to get pretty tidy again but I needed a new bass and had various bills to pay I managed to get really good prices for a lot of them and will start collecting again once I buy a new stereo setup. I had really nice original U.S pressings of the first two Big Star albums and MC5 - Back in the USA which I'll probably never fucking see again tho. I started collecting records about 7 years ago because they were dirt cheap but now they've got more "trendy" to collect so the prices have gone up at least 300% since then so its not going to be easy to replace a lot of them.....but its always fun. Its funny what people's age groups are supposed to listen too people usually give me funny looks like I'm shitting them when I say I'm really into Hank Williams or Roy Orbision :p

On another note do you get into Dead Moon?

hank williams and roy orbison is fine music ..

I dont know dead moon ...

I was really big on The Replacements and early Soul Asylum..
i found fugazi and Mudhoney unaccessable ..
from what i've seen, its the music musicians dig but otherwise hard to get into ..

i liked a lot of the subpop scene though .. Urge Overkill (obviously) and the Afghan Whigs .. etc

You should definatley check out some Dead Moon its probably the finest band to have come out of the Seattle scene. They're kinda old school garage rock Neil Young & Crazy Horse styles. I recommend their album Thirteen Off My Hook especially the song Dancing on my Grave. There's a really good scene with them in it on Hype! with them pressing there own LPs and playing one of their songs (that shit gives me goosebumbs!). But yeh if your into anything like Neil Young or The Sonics definatley check it out 'cause I think they've become my all time favorite band.

I think Mudhoney and Fugazi depends on the albums you have some are a lot easier to get into than others. I found the first two Fugazi EPs were a good start (Now both together on the CD 13 Songs) because In on the Killtaker is a really abrasive album until it grows on you but the first two EPs have stuff like Waiting Room, Suggestion and Give the Cure which have a really good catchey groove to them.

I've heard that early Soul Asylum is really good but I've kinda been put off by the whole "Runaway Train" thing....

A band that doesn't get the respect it deserves for pretty much starting the whole grunge scene is Husker Du. Zen Arcade is an album I'll be trashing till I'm grey, old and deaf!

Marroe 04-11-2005 08:31 PM

I had lots a tapes as a kid......Momma had all the good stuff on vinyl. I listened to Misfits, Violent Femmes, Social D, Roxette, Madonna, Guns n' roses, Def Leppard, Steve Miller, Queen, Poison, Cinderella (the band), Meatloaf, R.EM., Judas Priest, TheCramps, and Elton John in heavy rotation. Among some other off the wall shit....quite a variation, huh? haha

knife_fight 04-11-2005 09:21 PM

Dead Moon is currently my favorite band and I love the Sonics quite a bit too.

I'll have to keep an eye out for Dead Moon ..
Neil Young is a source of national pride here in Canada. (despite the fact that he hasnt lived here in years)
I have a signed book by his dad Scott Young - a well known author here.

re Husker Du .. Zen Arcade and a few others are in my vinyl collection as well ..

you definately have to check out Soul Asylum - 'made to be broken' .. 'clam dip and other favorites' .. 'hang time'...
You wont recognize them as the Runaway Train guys ..
Thats when i stopped listening to them ..

Saw them twice .. both times were the loudest concerts i ever saw - ears rang for 2 days later ..

Tat2 04-12-2005 01:01 PM

AC/DC -Highway to Hell, Dirty Deeds done Dirt Cheap
Nazareth - Hair of the Dog
Ted Nugent - Double Live Gonzo, Free for All
Alice Cooper - Greatest Hits
Kiss - Alive, Alive 2, Love Gun, Destroyer
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall
Neil Young and Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps
Peter Frampton - ...Comes Alive
Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
The Doors - Greatest Hits

And Comedy:

Cheech and Chong - The Big Bamboo Album :D

FairyKorpes 04-12-2005 01:09 PM

Yeh definatley check out Dead Moon and let me know what you think (If your a Neil Young or AC/DC fan you'll love that shit! + all their stuff is available on vinyl which is a bonus). Its a pity Neil Young's sick :( hopefully he'll pull thru ok. I was bummed out enough about Johhny Cash passing away let alone my favorite singer songwriter Neil biting the bullet. I didn't know his father was an author, what kinda stuff does he write? He seemed pretty cool on the Jim Jarmuch documentry Year of the Horse (I really dug how he thought the band was getting better and better cause not many people agree with me on that). Yeh I was reading an article somewhere that those Soul Asylum albums were kick ass I'll have to give them a day in court, its a pity when bands start off amazing and turn into a dull, run of mill, mainstream piece of shit. Speaking of old indie bands did you ever get into any of the old New Zealand bands like The Clean, Tall Dwarves, 3Ds and HDU (Basically what is known as the "Flying Nun" sound), ect? There from my hometown of Dunedin and have seemed to be quite influentual on the overseas indie scene. Pavement and Sebadoh in particular were really into them and sometimes cover their songs. Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac, producer of Nirvana's In Utero) has taken HDU under his wing in New York. I think that's the loudest gig I've ever been to ear shattering turn your body to jelly kinda shit! It's strange a band this good is barley recognised in their own country and gets more accailm overseas  you'd think it'd be the opposite. But I'll keep an eye out for some of it on LP and maybe we can do a trade or something because I imagine a lot of that stuff would be hard to find on vinyl over there. I never used to like Husker Du till I got a SST compilation called The Blasting Concept which had a song off their Metal Circus EP..... the song kicked my ass and I've been a die hard fan since.

Cool to hear knife_fight! I missed seeing Dead Moon (and the FUCKING MELVINS!!!!!! :( ) live over hear a couple of years ago and am still kicking myself in the ass for it. I really respect that they come over here and do heaps of date because most band seem to ignore NZ like its not important enough or something. There both really amazing bands, especially The Sonics they wrote some crazy music easily one of the coolest 60s garage bands. I've been listening to quite a lot of the 13th Floor Elevators' first album latley Roky Erikson was a really out there dude. I've been trying to find some of his solo stuff after hearing his track on the Return Of The Living Dead sountrack.

knife_fight 04-13-2005 09:12 PM

yeah, the 13th floor elevators were amazing. I met this old dude once who had on a vintage elevators shirt, and he told me he had seen em like 7 times "back in the day." I nearly shit. it would be so great to be able to say you had seen them.

I like Erickson's solo stuff, but not near as much as I like the Elevators. the main garage bands I've really been into are the Monks, the Sonics, and Gun Club. they're all really great. and like I said, right now I can't get enough of Dead Moon.

Elvis_Christ 04-13-2005 10:24 PM

Yeh the Elevators would've been real fucking cool to see! I used to have a compilation LP called "Texas Punk Bands From The Sixities" it had a bunch of really cool garage bands on it like Mouse and the Traps and a whole bunch of other real cool shit. It even had Them on it (strangley enough..... Them from Texas?! apparentley the ended up there after Van Morrision left the band) with out Van Morrision which fuckin' ripped. Are you in a band yourself at the moment?

knife_fight 04-13-2005 11:13 PM

sort of. I was in a band that was "professional" for awhile, but about 6 months ago I quit to go work for the railroad. I'm still doing music stuff, but it's mainly for my own amusement.

a huge bummer about neil .. i hope he pulls through.
His dad wrote a lot of sports related stuff .. including hocky stories for kids ..

i dont know the NZ indie bands you mentioned but i do have 3 pavement CDs. on one of them i heard something that reminded me of old Van De Graff Generator so i always wondered if they were an influence.too.

soul asylum seemed to take a turn for the worse when the lead singer hooked up with winona ryder .. mind you - there are still a few good tracks on The Horses They Road In On ... even Grave Diggers Union ... not all of it is mainstream ...thank god

Elvis_Christ 04-13-2005 11:22 PM

What sort of stuff did you guys play? We're starting to sort our shit out in my band and we've had a bunch of gigs latley and more on the horizion but we're still getting our shit down.... but its been fun because I hadn't played any music seriously bandwise since I was about 16 or 17.

Yeh it is a bummer :( about Neil. Yeh I guess if you've been a fan for awhile you always find a few songs that have some of the old spark that got you into them in the first place. I should sort out some copies of some of those NZ bands and get them out to you cause it just might be your cup of tea if you like stuff like Pavement. I think Slanted and Enchanted and Wowee Zowee are my favorite albums of theirs. Haven't heard of Van De Graff Generator. Do you get into Pere Ubu? I really like their albums The Modern Dance and Dub Housing.

bwind22 04-14-2005 03:45 AM

I havent read this whole thread, so forgive me if these have already been mentioned...

Now that we are in the CD age and no one has vinyl anymore, here are some more current ones from the past decade...

Everybody and there mother seems to have these 3 albums...

Green Day - Dookie
Weezer - The Blue Album
Nirvana - Nevermind

well, I quit the last two bands I was about 6 months ago. One was sorta AC/DC, Stooges-influenced trash rock that had lyrics about horror movies (!). the other was kinda classic country, honky tonk, irish, rockabilly something or other. besides those two bands I've been in countless punk, hardcore, indie, garage, and whatever else bands.

Hahaa! I like the sound of the AC/DC, Stooges horror lyrics one! That sounded awesome. We basically do Amebix style punk metal with a dose of rock n roll and a lot of influence from the Melvins.

nothin' wrong with that! I saw the Melvins not too long ago with Tomahawk, that was a good one.

and yeah, I listen to more vinyl than cd and it's not just old stuff, either. in fact, most people I hang out with listen to more vinyl than cd.

Lucky!!! I missed them last time they were here because I couldn't be fucked seeing Tool. I heard they were going to do some other shows without Tool but it didn't happen. Next time I'll be there for sure. I was all excited about Guitar Wolf comming here but there bassist died  so its all over.....
Yeh I'd listen to more vinyl than CD aswell it just has a nicer sound to it and when you find something you like its more of a buzz than just ordering in a CD.... its like "Holy shit that's on vinyl??!!!" the artwork is usually better and you get something more unique.

urgeok 04-15-2005 04:40 AM

album artwork is pretty much a dead issue ...now that CDs are the thing.

What bang are you going to get with that little square ?

some amazing origional pieces of art and photography were done for the 12" ... it was a great part of collecting vinyl, the great covers ..

every know and then an artist tries to do it on CD and you get this 12" square that is folded down into CD size .. so when you look at it you get a heavily creased picture that wont lie flat.

nice try boys ..

Such as Emerson, Lake & Palmer's cover for Brain Salad Surgery, done by H.R.Giger.

Creeper, that puts me in mind of the "Satanic Panic" of the early to mid eighties. Album burning....Geraldo's special....Anton LeVey agging them on with his former "sinister" self. It was almost a regular witch hunt.

Now back to the thread.

Too true.....

I hate the CD reissues that are made to look like minature LPs :o Every now and then a cool CD cover pops up. Tool's Aniema was a good example of this with the moving pictures. I also liked the album covers that folded out into a massive poster (Crass had some great ones) now they try and do that on CD you get a puny little A4 sized "poster".....lame. A lot of albums are just worth getting for the cover I had a accordian "party" album with this old dude having a accordian sing along with some chicks in his lounge with ballons hanging in the background. I don't know if they did it on purpose but on the wall there's a long balloon hung with two round ones in a position that looks exactley like a huge cock with massive swelled up balls :D that cover never ceased to amuse me! I'll try and find a pic of it and post it to show you guys.
