OK so my list of most reviled movies in this forum is a wind up, but having said that BWP is a phenomenal horror experience, Jason X was a brave move and well underrated, Freddy's Revenge is dark and very unusual, Halloween 3 is a perfectly effective horror film slagged mainly due to its lack of (yawn) a certain Mr Myers, and Resident Evil is not that bad a game tie-in - sure beats Super Mario Bros., StreetFighter, Mortal Kombat... |
Quote:
No, Jason X really did suck ass.....I mean they put no effort into it, so therefore it wasn't a brave attempt. I liked Freddy 2 not as much as the others but I still liked it. Halloween 3 is a kickass movie even if it didn't have Myers in it. Resident Evil had Zombies, cerberus dogs, and Umbrella and a hint of Nemesis. Not that great of a tie in there. Now Resident Evil 2 was a great movie. ALOT better than the first one. |
Here is what I think are the top 5 best Horror movies
1 The Devils Castle 1896 by Georges Melies. I think that the Devils Castle is without a doubt the best horror movie for this simple reason. It was the very 1st Horror movie ever made and without it other horror movies would not have followed. Btw the DevilsCastle was also the 1st Vampire movie. My 2nd pick is The Howling 1981 as it is imo to this day the best made Werewolf movie I have seen. 3rd would be Horror of Dracula 1958 with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. I had a bit of trouble deciding on which is the better Dracula movie Horror of Dracula or Bram Stokers Dracula in 1992 after thinking about it it has to be Horror of Dracula you just cant beat Lee and Cushing in a Dracula movie. My 4th pick is Godzilla 1954 as it is a movie about a mutated giant dinosarur who has the power of the h-bomb and he destroys in sheer torror an entire city and makes it radioactive leaving nothing but a wake of death and destrution behind him. My 5th pick is the Omen 1976 as it is a great movie about the Antichrist which is in the bible. Just the idea of such a person being alive is really a scary thought. |

Best Horror Movies
(1) The Exorcist
(2) Brom Stokers DRACULA (3) 13 Ghosts (4) Freddy VS Jason (5) Halloween Resurection |
Austin think about it if there had not ever been a 1st Horror movie there would not be a horror movie genre. It was the 1st horror movie that inspired other film makers to make that type of movie. It just so happens to be the 1st Horror movie ever made was Georges melies The Devils Castle in 1896. And dont forget the 1st Scifi movie was A trip to the moon 1902 without that movie there would not be a Scifi genre and Melies made that movie as well. Anyway thats why I think the DevilsCastle is the best because without it no other horror movies would even exist. I could say my faves are Exorcist the Omen Halloween Frankenstien 1931 Dracula 1931 but they arnt. I saw those movies at the Drive in growing up but imo Hammers 1968 movie The Devil Rides Out is a far better movie than the Exorcist and it is a shame the Devil Rides out never made it here in the US. I like Karloff in Universals 1931 Frankenstien movie alot but I think Hammer made better Frankenstien movies with Peter Cushing. And Chris Lee rules as Dracula not that Bela did a bad job bela was great in 1931 but perhaps Carlos Villarias in Universals Spanish Dracula movie may have done a better job at playing the evil count. I never really thought of Halloween as being great and I am puzzled by fans who say it is. The Exorcist is a very good movie not scary but well made. The Omen I love Damien Omen I like even better. But the 1931 Frankenstien would have never of been made had it not been for Thomas Edison who made the 1st Frankenstien movie in 1910 the 2nd Frankenstien movie was in 1915 titled Life without a Soul. Then 16 years later Universal made Frankenstien with Karloff. I think the 5 movies I picked were good choices for what they are and for what they represent in Horror movie history.

Hi Austin I know eveyone has their faves I have been a horror fan for 38 years I love these movies. I grew up always saying Lugosi was the best Dracula but to be honest its Chris Lee. I think alot of fans will just go with what they hear might be the best horror movie instead of watching as many horror movies as they can. You can always tell which way the horror movie genre is going by looking at the past horror movies. You may have noticed i did not say TCM as a fave and for good reason the 1974 movie is by far one of the biggest waste of film. You dont see what the movie implies there is no big massacre just a guy in a mask that motions as though he might be cutting when he isnt. The movie was just plain stupid it never got better it just got worse. I am thinking of renting the TCM remake in hopes it is a better movie. Come to think of it one of the top 5 should have been KingKong 1933 by RKO b&w that movie is a Masterpiece I saw the movie in a Theatre back in 1973 40th Anniversary showing. The movie was AWESOME. It was made in 1933 and I walked away saying to my dad WOW they could makes movies like that in 1933? He just smiled and said I guess so.

i totally agree that Chris Lee is the best Dracula.
i understand what you're saying about people just hearing that a horror movie is suppose to be one of the best and they figure it is and that's it but i've seen quite a bit and i think that Halloween was a great film and i think it's the best horror movie i've ever seen, i also like the old classics like Phantom of the Opera which is one of my favorate movies. While most horror movies usually stick to what the title is selling i'll have to disagree with you about the Texas Chainsaw Massacre being a waste of film sure the title insist that the movie is about some sort of slaughter but you have to realize that the title of a movie is critical to success and if you're a horror fan or not if you see a advertisment for a movie called the Texas Chainsaw Massacre you're going to take some interest. You could walk out of the theater thinking like ''aww man it says massacre and 15 people didn't get dismembered'' but just because you didn't directly get what the title insisted doesn't mean you should down the whole film for it a title is just marketing. and by the way do yourself a favor and stay far far away from the TCM remake. |
um..... ive seen so many horror movies that my mind is just fucked so ill just say my top five horror guys....
1 ash 2 freddy 3 leather face 4 zombies 5 mike myers an jason |

1 Evil Dead 2 Nightmare on Elm Street 3 Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4 I'm guessing one of the dead trilogy 5 Halloween |
coz some of there movie are shit an some arnt
|
I agree some of these movies arnt really all that good imo. Take NOTLD in 1968 I saw it at the drive in back then and I thought it was a movie about drunks staggering around. and in 1980 the movie The Shining almost board me to death.. I think some fans expect a certain level of entertainment. Rehashing the same stuff over and over is just boring. I think reinventing and retelling the story is the way to go.
|
No offence, but how can a fan of godzilla possibly get down on other movies for rehashing old ideas when your #1 movie monster has been in the same plot for over 50 years:
Big rubbery monster destroys major city, gets driven away at end. NOTLD is a classic. It single handedly created the zombie movie genre. As far as the Shining... Not gonna argue with you there. i love it, but to each his own. Just look in the mirror before you start pointing fingers. |
Hi Vod I belive there were Zombie movies made before NOTLD 2 years before that in 1966 AstroZombies and way before that i think even Lugosi was in a Zombie movie. So I must disagree that NOTLD in 1968 created the Zombie movie genre. I can tell you for fact Toho studios has made 3 diffrent Godzilla movie series in the past 50 years . They didnt make the same plot over and over again. They have retold the Godzilla story 3 times. I like that at least its not rehashing. You know I am without a doubt one of the biggest Godzilla fans there is but I HATE the 70s G movies imo they suck bigtime. I do like all of the Godzilla movies of the 2nd series. The Heisei series movies 1984-1995 where not only are the monsters twice their original hight but the movies are much better made than the older movies. And the 3rd series the monsters are smaller closer to what they were in the 50s-70s but again the movies are higher quality and the storys are diffrent not the same old stuff. Example in 2 movies in 2002 and 2003 Godzilla is a clone. Now does that soundlike the same old plot I think not and thats one example. I also like Dracula 2000 now there is a retelling of the story its diffrent thus not the same old stuff. Now Peter Jackson on what I hear will have Kong at being 25 ft tall I think that will bum out alot of Kong fans including myself. but it is diffrent so I will go see the movie in december. btw have you read my other posts on the board? I talk alot about Dracula and other horror characters. Well I am off breakfast time.
|
Idont hunt around to find people's other posts just to get to knwo them, sorry.
Astro-Zombies was 69, and even if there were previous zombie films, NOTLD set the standard by which all following films are graded. There were "Space Operas" before Star Wars, but Lucas' movies set the bar. okay, so Star wars is a bad example. Basically, if the movie created the pattern, then it started the genre. Have you seen any canniballistic walking corpse movies set atround a small group of people making due in a seemingly hopeless situation before NOTLD that had the same impact? |
Hi Vod I dont mean to sound mean but I am honest in how I feel when I see any type of horror movie. I found NOTLD to be boring and I have seen Romeros other Zombie movies. How do the kids say it Gag me with a spoon anyway thats how I feel about Romeros films. IMO they arnt good but thats just me so dont take it personal. I dont take it personal when people say they dont like Godzilla movies. They find it surprising I dont like many of them myself. What I like is a very well made horror movie thats it. I know who made the horror and scifi movie genres that credit goes to Georges Melies french film maker and former Magican. George Pal in his day advanced the scfi genre then George Lucas came along and did more advancing. I am not a fan of Zombie movies but I have seen a few that may have entertained me. Now I concider Mummy movies to be Zombie movies because if you define what a Zombie or Mummy is it is a walking dead person. I see mummys as Zombies from Egypt. I do like some of the mummy movies not all but some. My fave is Hammers 1971 Blood from the Mummys Tomb staring Valerie Leon. I will tell you what bothers me I dont mean you btw i mean just people who say all Godzilla movies suck without seen them. imo those people are morons at least I try and see a movie before I pass judgment. I dont thinkanyone can name a top 5 best horror movies because there are so so so many good horror movies. Even after 38 years soon to be 39 years of watching horror its tough to choose. I dont go by popular polls I go by what I have seen in the last 38 years.

Hello Gojira. I agree with everybody having their own opinion.
Saying that Halloween or TCM aren't even good horror movies I think is absurd. I am 17 and no one has ever told me which horror movies to like. I love all kinds of horror. Obviously by the avatar I am a Halloween fan. IMO I think it is the best horror movie ever. It has set the bar for slashers. Sure there was Norman Bates, or Leatherface, but the slashers copied Myers more than anybody. He has a cool feel and great style. The movie had a great feel and a fantastic music score. I don't think Tcm or the Excorcist should get so much praise as they do but none the less, Two very awesome horror movies. No offence, and it is probably just me, but It seems you think it is the coolest thing in the world to like these old ass movies and criticize popular movies that(obviously)are popular becuase they were great movies. Everybody has their own opinion though and I respect that, I'm just saying credit should be given when it is due, Halloween,TCM,NOTLD,Excorcist(which I agree with you on it) totally should be given credit. |
Hi Nemesis I dont think all old horror movies are better than most current horror movies. I think Mary Shelleys Frankenstien movie in 1994 is a far better Frankenstien movie than Universals 1931 version with Karloff and ColinClive. What I like are just very well made horror movies that will pass the test of time in the future and I like those movies that have passed the test of time. I think everyone does. When I was 17 back in 1978 I saw Halloween and it is by far one of the best thriller movies I have seen that Jaws and Psycho are all great thrillers imo. I remember going to see the Exorcist back in 1973 it was a very good horror movie it was not scary but it did have a few disturbing scenes in the movie. I liked it. I prefer the Omen over the Exorcist anyday. The Omen rules! If you want to talk slashers the ultimate slasher in a movie is Gigan. Gigan is a giant cyborg monster who has 2 giant hooks for hands and he can slash through buildings and anything else he likes. I would rather watch a good Werewolf movie than watch a Jason Freddy or Myers movie. I think a Werewolf movie has more substance and a Werewolf will just rip you to bits without the aid of a weapon. One movie I would like to see is the remake of TCM. I saw TCM in 1974 and what a jip that was. The title is Texas Chainsaw Massacre yet there no Massacre just a guy who motions like he is cutting but you can see he isnt. The movie just gets worse. I think I clapped when it ended because it ended. And I was at a Drive in LOL. Well I hope the remake is better.
|
After reading that Gojira.....I must say that I see where you are coming from. I had seen the Exorcist with my granparents but maybe a year ago and I laughed, I mean people fainting and saying how bad it was, I LAUGHED. I didn't hysterically laugh but I mean I don't care WHAT year it was(i get that alot, how ppl say it was bc of the year it was so scary) I also prefer the omen that is a badass movie I love it.
I however do prefer the 1931 version of Frankenstein a little more. Frankenstein is my 2nd only to Myers. I like werewolf movies as do you. Everybody on here loves to knock on TCM remake. I have a feeling you won't like it but I did very much. Everybody says it is nothing like the original....but then again I will agree(while I liked it) it wasn't what people make it to be. So I guess we shall see what your thoughts are on it. And yeah your're pretty cool lol. P.s I also think Chris Lee was the best Dracula, besides Bela Indeed. |

LOL good thing I didnt tell Omen I just about fell asleep watching the Shining back in 1980. The movie was just way to long I was bored.
|
So who cares that you fell asleep watching the Shining it was a boring ass movie, if you want a movie that will keep you awake it would be the newest Shining the one that Stephen King did.
|
The new Shining?........heh........yeah..........right.... ....*scoff*

LOL. That is by far the dumbest thing I've read on these boards. Saying you don't care for The Shining is okay, if not questionable, but to put that slop from King ahead of it...wow... your credibility is just shit. It's obvious to me that if you think Kubrick's version is boring, you're not a fan of great movies. Maybe you're too young to appreciate anything that isn't edited like a McG movie or video. The slow pace is what makes it great. |
