Yes, "The Devil's Backbone" was very good. It had a great atmosphere. It was creepy in a subtle way.

Yes the devils backbone had a real European art house look even though it was a horror directed by a Mexican, he’s really good, Cronos was just a bit better though I think!

Is Hellboy any good it’s not out here yet?

BudMan 04-29-2004 06:43 PM

I haven't seen it myself yet but my son said it was pretty good.

nine9 04-29-2004 07:12 PM

Hi!

I didn't know there was an original Vanishing, will look for this.

As for The Devil's Backbone, saw the trailer before, and wanted to see it, but hasn't been at our Blockbuster store so far as I know. We saw the trailer a while ago and were interested. Now I want to see it NOW!!!!! Just refreshed our memory with the trailer.

I guess I have to sleep soon, early shift.

Thanks guys!

hellfire1 04-30-2004 02:12 AM

another movie that was really great and then just got butchered by the american remake, not really horror but still good : "abre los ojos" which became "vanilla sky". why, why, why would they do that ??? the original had a very horrorlike creepiness to it and a great atmosphere and then they just had to make a remake... with tom cruise ! ... ugh˛

has anyone seen "tesis" with the same actor who's in "abre los ojos" and "devil's backbone" ? if not, it's a really freaky movie and you should !

back when i had my satelite tv, oh how i miss those days, i had my subscription to filmfour with their collection of art films, euro films and their extreme section. i had been seeking out this film after i enjoyed the others.

hellfire1 04-30-2004 11:06 AM

if you enjoyed them, you should definitely try and see "abre los ojos". same two actors as in tesis... really a good movie ( not like it's shitty remake ! )

Hi Ferel Cat and Budman!

Hope you will read this.

Just saw Devil's Backbone, and was so impressed! Thanks for the tip! I thought it was very creepy, and we liked the non- Hollywood effects a lot. It was sad. Kid ghosts are just the creepiest somehow!

Excellent!!!

I’m glad you enjoyed it nine9, it really is a sad film, “sleepaway”, told me it made him/her cry when we where chatting on another forum!
His (Guillimero del toro) first film Cronos is brilliant if you have not seen it yet!

Hi!

You could keep me awake all night!

I'll look for it!

You definately have the same taste as me in movies! You are going to keep me very busy.

If I don't write back right away I'll talk to you tomorrow.
Really have to sleep. It's almost twelve here, and I'm having a lot of trouble getting up early as it is.

cronos is a very good film.

feral cat 05-02-2004 11:28 PM

Yeah I love Cronos, its such a different take on the vampire theme! Ron Perlman realy gets around … it was only recently that I found out he was Vincent in the Beauty and the beast series!

The Eye!

Oh Hell Yes!!

I need to get my hands on some more Asian horror, this was fucking amazing!!!!

Very good movie

wufong 10-15-2004 04:44 PM

yeah no shit, asian horror can be good stuff. im lucky here, we have a multi cultural tv station and every now and again they put on some great asians horrors/action movies. but they're in sub titles though. but its still good

zwoti 10-15-2004 11:21 PM

nothing wrong with subtitles

feral cat 10-16-2004 03:39 AM

subtitles are much more accurate as a rule, plus a bad dub will kill a good movie ... Unless its 70's Kung Fu ... in which case a bad dub is a bonus!:D

allmykids 10-16-2004 07:24 AM

YA It was OK!!

SamCostello 10-16-2004 08:01 AM

I really enjoyed the set up, but felt that as the movie went on it got to be more and more like Ringu.

Can we get a new plotline, please?

What like cheesy dated 80s horror, Friday the 13th part 56 or how about another Halloween movie. I never get bored of seeing dumb fuck teenagers getting stabbed, axed, stabbed, oh shit i already wrote stabbed.

SamCostello 10-16-2004 08:41 AM

Brilliant strawman there, thanks.

But I think that since I asked for a new plotline that would specifically exclude "cheesy dated" plots from 25 years ago, wouldn't you?

Sam

Fair enough , but what was the last good horror you saw with a original story line?

Strawman??????? what does that mean?

SamCostello 10-16-2004 09:07 AM

Audition was pretty original. So was May. There are a bunch.

Of course there's nothing that's completely original, I grant you that, but there are some things that wear their influences much mmore obviously than others.

I just feel that The Eye, and a bunch of post-Ringu Asian films, have drawn too much on the plot structure of Ringu and haven't created enough on their own.

Some info about strawman arguments at: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~lilyth/strawman.html

Sam

feral cat 10-16-2004 09:13 AM

I don't think "The Eye" owes much to "Ringu" at all, pretty diffrent films other than originating in Asia ...

SamCostello 10-16-2004 09:18 AM

I felt that the plot - going back to someone's home town/region, to discover what happened to them/how they died, meeting a disturbed parent, trying to correct the wrong, and (as I recall in The Eye, but don't remember for sure) failing - all seem like pretty major elements of Ringu.

Sam

ichi the killer 10-16-2004 09:24 AM

the Eye , if anything was closer to sixth Sense than Ringu but true what you're saying. The grudge good as it is, the main protaginist is a carbon copy of sadako. Liked that Straw man thing.

yes

feral cat 10-16-2004 09:31 AM

... Those are very small, unimportant elements and I think you are thinking of Ringu 2... ... Going back to a small hometown at the start of a horror to find out what happend is a constant in horror, long before either of these movies!

The Eye is a movie to make you jump for the most part relying on sudden shocks ... "What are you doing in my chair" where as I would say Ringu is a creepy movie in which the fear builds...

I would say it was closer to Sixth Sense as well ... although much better than Sixth ...

Sixth itself can be said to be influenced by Jacobs Ladder, Carnival of Souls and other movies of that type ... after 100 years of Cinema everything has an influence!

Dark_Hero 10-16-2004 03:25 PM

I havnt seen Ringu yet, but I will soon.

Blockbuster doesnt have The Grude/Dark Water/Spiral (Uzumaki, if Im not mistaken)....Ive tried downloading Grudge (I like seeing the original before the remake, which I really wanna see) but have no luck...

I did think it seemed kinda like 6th Scence though...In a way. Much better though

uzumaki (vortex) and the spiral are different films.

Dolarhyde 10-16-2004 06:17 PM

I really liked The Eye. I've seen Ringu as well, and prefer it over The Ring.

I'm interested in seeing Ju-on : The Grudge. There's also Ju-on : The Curse. I read on another forum that one was supposed to be a lot better than the other, but I can't remember which. :(

thEsounDofdirT 10-16-2004 07:28 PM

k.. i really enjoyed the plot/story here.. but i really think it was delivered rather poorly...

i have heard that tom cruise bought the rights to this movie and that it'll be redone... and i'm thinking if this occurs.. it will be very frightening and one great movie

the bad cg really made for some disappointment for me as i watched.. but there were some elements of surprise that were really quite unnerving (in a good way)

EXTR3MIST 10-18-2004 03:49 AM

The Eye is similar but superior to The Sixth Sense, because; no "isn't he a marvellous little actor!" cute kids to distract from the point, It has no recognisable stars to carry the story, and the revelatory ending is not anticipated right from the opening scenes.

There was too a cute kid >.>;;. Wonderful movie though. Managed to scare me without excessive gore. I'm difficult to scare but when the main character was learning calligraphy and the...torso ghost...flew at her...geez...I was ashamed. Even if I was alone I really over reacted. Pet cat thought I was insane.

I loved the guy in the lift. The wife hates it when i get Asian horror its the only thing that really scares her. She watched the Grudge & it got in her head for weeks lmao. The Asians are leading the way in horror at the moment just like they did with action films a few years ago. just hope they don t fuck up the remake like they did with Ring.
