I tip if i pay for dinner. And its usually over tipping too

When me and my girls go out to eat, we over tip sooo much. If we get a cute guy waiting on us, we purposely take forever ordering, get tons of refils and generally flirt with him. So we each tip like 30%

"Come down to Australia, we dont tip here, except i tip hot bar staff (girls)"

- Not entirely true. In my experience, the hot bar girls are the ones most prone to fucking up...I tip where I think tipping's necessary....I won't tip on EVERY drink I have at a bar, but there IS always a tip at least worth say 1 or 2 of what I'm having by the end of the night.
In restaurants, I just usually throw the change their way to the nerest 10 or 20, depending on the meal.
If you eat out, like at cafe, I'll usually only tip the waiter/ess if they're cool with ya, and don't fuck up superbly, but hey usually they don't, but yknow, usually only a fiver...which IS more than most people would do here.
Only places I don't really tip are those that it wouldn't go back to the staff...
Although, u do have a point, distorty, hardly anyone here DOES tip, we don't exactly have any kinda tipping structure so to speak, that may be that our waitstaff/barstaff and other "civil servants" are paid a little better by the hour over here?

Ever see resevoir dogs? I cant stand people who dont tip good service.... Wait people get paid shit for very hard, shitty work.

I tip 20% for average service, next to nothing or nothing for poor service, and for good to great service i have tipped from 25-50%. I have been remembered fondly and taken care of VERY well as a result. i have had bartenders remember my face after 1 visit 3 months later. They remember what i drink, and i usually get extras. I consider it advance payment on future service.

When i proposed to Bree, that night we went on a horse-drawn carriage ride around boston. The driver was friggin awesome, he gave us a history lesson, made jokes, said hi to everyone we passed, he was just an all-around great person. The ride came to $60, i paid $90 and told him to keep the change. The fact that he said he couldnt take it was why i let him keep it :)

I now have a contact in boston that has offered me all kinds of hookups, especially for next month on my honeymoon :)

So continue to not tip. You will eventually get the service you deserve.

I'm sure there are cheap-ass people of all breeds. I never was fond of generalizations. Its all about the service for me. If the waitstaff has a good sence of humor and is attentive then he or she will get at least 20 to 30%. If on the other hand he or she is "bored" or grumpy than they get dick.

This brings up another pet peeve of mine. Cashiers. You go do your weekly shopping or whatever, spending up to $200 [ I got four kids ] and the cashier [ usually a teenage girl ] will barely look at you because shes to busy talking to the girl at the next register or to the bag-boy. Pisses me off.
On the same subject....you take home the $200 worth of groceries and the next day one of the four bastards whom live in the same house will open the fridge...stand there for 5 minutes and proclaim [ loud enough for the neighboors to hear ] that "THERES NOTHING TO EAT".

sorry.....had to vent.

Had to add one more thing. When you bring home all those groceries and are bringing them into the house, the kids all manage to dissapear.

i live in florida and i personally, over tip alot!!!! just because i know what kind of people waiters have to deal with. ok here's my ley out of it if my waiter looks like they've been having a rough day then i'll be nice and leave more, or if im in a good mood then i'll leave more. i really dont care alot about money, i know it doesnt grow on trees but its not a concirn with me. anyways if my bill is $20 then i'll leave a $5 or $6 dollar tip. if my bill is $120 then i'll leave mabye a 20-30 dollar tip. but its all depending on the service. if i get bad service then i wont leave as much. :D

And yes....I did notice that I contradicted myself.

MichaelMyers 09-10-2004 06:24 AM

I usually tip 10%.
