I ended up viewing the movie by downloading it. I'm glad I didn't make a trip to the theatre in order to see it, though. Not that I was displeased with it, just disappointed. When I read reviews saying such things as viewers were fainting and wretching by watching the film, I expected it to be pretty intense. It wasn't for me, at least. Then again, everyone has different levels on a wide spectrum on what may be considered disturbing or uncomfortable.

Hostel is less gory than the Green Inferno. I guess people were expecting something like August Underground or Grotesque.

No I think people were expecting something that tried to top the impact of Cannibal Holocaust or Ferox.

How can you do a decent 3rd world cannibal film without the traditional dick violence.

I saw this opening weekend and was extremely let down. If you look at it as a dark comedy then it kinda improves. But as a horror film it was just bad IMO. Terrible characters, terrible decisions, complete lack of urgency from the cast, lack of violence apart from once scene. Just bland.

Overall I was happy with it, buuut I really wanted more gore.

Yeah apart from that first kill (and some quick cuts in the plane) there was nada.

The mix of serious horror/drama with "comedy" just didn't work imo.
Should've been a serious horror or else an over-the-top gorefest.
And the ending sucked.

P.S. "It relieves the tension."

Yup, I felt exactly the same way.

I thought it started out well and went well for a bit, then it went downhill and I thought the ending was soooooo stupid ::sad::

This was disappointing but not as bad as ‘Knock Knock’. After these two, I’m not looking forward to Eli Roth getting behind the camera again. His first three films weren’t perfect but I enjoyed them all.

Yeah, Eli used to be a Director I got excited for, but hes going downhill quick.

Was bored so here's what I would've done

A group of activists go to a fictional jungle to document arecently discovered tribe.
When they arrive at the tribe's village it seems deserted.
They set up camp and document their surroundings.
After a while the local children come out of hiding. The groups guide knows a little
of the language and finds out all the adults are taken but he doesn't understand the rest.
When night falls a second tribe, cannibals, arrive. They attack and capture the
group. Someone gets killed in the fight in order to secure the escape of someone else.
Cannibals take the group to their village.
The village is larger than in original movie. It's darker and less colourful.
Skulls, bones, weird totems, remains of the first tribe, maybe a couple left in captivity.
The cannibals look meaner. Each and everyone of them.
From this moment on the movie switches between gory stuff in the village
and between the escaped character trying to find the others along with some kid from the first
village.
When the escapee arrives, (s)he gets captured. More gore ensues. Rituals and stuff.
Toward the ending during the main ritual, a rescue party/soldiers arrive
and a blood battle starts in which most (or all) cannibals are killed.
A couple of activists survive to tell their tale (and to go back in part 2?)
Fade out. Maybe a cannibal pops out from behind a bush and the screen goes to black.

I liked GI but didnt love it but it was worth seeing in cinema. I Will get the dvd, but am willing to wait for it to go down to $10 or less. It wasn't like It Follows where I wanted it as soon as ot hit store shelves.
