i forgot about The Great Escape - thats a good one

I never think of THE GREAT ESCAPE as a war movie...I love the flick, but for me it falls into the prison-break subgenre of action films... which is another subgenre I dig

hell, I even liked VICTORY which hits the war/prison-break/sports film subgenre (not too many of those, I'm guessin')

Forgot those two. Great movies.

The Thin Red Line and Black Hawk Down...two of the recent good ones.

Some good war pics mentioned here. Have to put Apocalypse Now at the top. Deer Hunter, Full Metal Jacket and Platoon are excellent, too. I also liked Hunt for Red October. Saving Private Ryan was decent. I like some of the classics mentioned here as well - Bridge Over the River Kwai, Dirty Dozen, Guns of Navarone, Big Red One, All Quiet on the Western Front, and even Patton if that qualifies. Love it that someone mentioned Victory. In addition to being in Gallipoli (which many people here seem to like, and I do too) Gibson did a couple of war films that are entertaining in The Patriot and Braveheart - if you can classify those as war pictures- maybe Last of the Mohicans (1992) fits as well. The war/battle scenes at the beginning of Gladiator were awesome, too.

To these I would add The Longest Day.

I'm trying to remember the names of a few others...

Catch 22 of course. Can't believe no one else has mentioned it.

Destination Tokyo is very suspenseful.
