Lycanthrope as far as I know is a disease whereas an infected person or animal must transmit the disease thru saliva or blood contact. Settlers probably saw the indians performing rituals dressed in animal clothing and acting animal like thus the reason for why they think werewolves exist. Indians used Peyote, a hallucinagen, to alter there state of mind making them feel animal like. I have a book about changing oneself into an animal but not on this plane of existance. Want to see a great wolf film check out Wolfen, it is an older film and Gregory Hines is in it, sorry he doesnt dance in that one, but it is pretty good. There is a fair explanation in the film about the relationship between the Indians and wolves.

In foke lore there are many ways to contract lycanthropy, the most common is to put on an enchanted wolf's pelt or belt. There are also salves or balms that are said to induce lycanthropy. Not to mention the one about drinking rain water from the paw print of a wolf. My favorite is the old wives tale of babies being born under a full moon on Christmas eve.
Anyhowls I am not sure were the popular bite or scratch came into play. |
