I have YIM, but most of the people I talk to are on AIM exclusively (or AIM and MSN, and I don't do MSN) and I don't like having too many programs open since I'm usually running iTunes and/or Photoshop

Tell her to stop by once in a while. I can't understand why people take this place so serious. If it gets inundated with assholes [which it does from time to time ] then just take a break.
