ya ill correct you right now. exorcist is good for a laugh, just to see an ugly possesed girl saying that peoples mothers suck cocks in hell. but its certainly not scary. As for Dead Birds being the scariest film ever, idk about that, but its definetly up there.

"Deadbirds....Scariest movie ever made...."

Me and the three other people I watched it with found this to be a rather heaping pile of trash. I wouldn't really call it scary. Typical, and it had SOME atmosphere. Nowhere NEAR as scary as some others. But then again... it depends on tastes. It was definately one of the lower-rated horror movies I've seen in the past few years.

For classics;

Nightmare on Elm Street
Friday the 13th
Halloween
Child's Play

Evil Dead 1 & 2 (2 specifically)
Dead Alive / Braindead

Ringu / The Ring

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)

House of 1000 Corpses
The Devil's Rejects
The Hills Have Eyes 06

PS. Mothman, someone has. Infact, Vodstok did in the first reply to this thread.

FrightNight

The Hunger

Maniac

The Frightners

Subspecies

Alien

Nosferatu(the original)

A bit of mix for you to see what genre of horror you prefer.

Also check out any Hammer film and anything with Christopher Lee

Texas Chainsaw Massacre(original)
The Burning
Black Christmas
Hellraiser
Witchboard
Halloween
Nightmare on Elm Street

don't listen to these folk, listen to me.

DON'T follow other people's reccomendations. Just dive into it with a blank slate. Go with the ones that you've heard of before, ones where you've heard the title mentioned in passing, et cetera. Browse the horror sections in the video store and look at the backs of the cases, get what ones sound interesting to you. You'll get some bad ones, sure, but you'll be forming your own opinion about everything without influence. It's mostly what people did before the internet got all popular.

Yeah STE is right on.

Just because 1 person thinks something is good doesn't mean you will... I happen to think that Audition wasn't great, but a lot of people here like it... Same goes for pretty much anything... You won't know what you think, until you see it.

In my opinion, the most essential horror movies for you to check out would be these...

A Nightmare on Elm Street
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (original)
Night of the Living Dead (original)
Dawn of the Dead (original)
Halloween

I'd say start with those 5 and then expand from there based on what you like and don't like about them. Those 5 are movies that pretty much every horror fan has seen and gives respect to so it's a real good place to start.

Camp Blood 1 & 2
Killjoy 1,2
Nursie
pieces

All got for gore and a laugh mate ;)

pieces is worth watching for the end. it is the biggest "WHAT THE FUCK!?!?!" aside from Sleepaway camp.

For the recored, STE is right, but at least you now have a nice log list of title sto choose from. Think of them as guidelines.
