On a serious note, it is human nature to become defensive about films/music etc. in "our day" when faced with a bunch of remakes designed primarily to cash-in on current trends and make glaring statements about current lack of creativity and imagination (that a remake may be "good/watchable" is not the point - every one that is released is one less original idea to make the screen).

When we start accepting remakes (and remakes of remakes) without scepticism, the genre is fucked much like throwaway boyband music and Euro-pop - covering and sampling old records - have ruined the music charts.

I coulnt care less about remakes. Sure, there are some that I think are a really bad idea *cough*TheTingler*cough* but nobodys forcing me to watch them [even though I usually do anyway], and no mstter how bad they are, Ill still be able to come home and watch the original. Plus, there are a few really kickass remakes, IE- The Fly, The Thing, House on Haunted Hill...the list goes on

I understand what you're saying COMPLETELY.....Unfortunately...It doesn't seem like anyone is coming up with any NEW ideas, that are better than the old ones they're ripping off and remaking....*sigh*

If you trail the underground and indie horror/exploitation scene, you can find a wealth of new talent coming up with all sorts of eye-opening work (you still need to wade through the dross of Romero ripoffs, though).

Sadly, these are destined to remain obscure so long as wealthy production companies can effortlessly reap rewards by giving teenagers another hip bogeyman or ironic take on a classic horror theme or icon.

Having said that, I'm quite happy for my interests to remain underground - imagine Scrapbook or Nekromantik playing to the multiplex crowds?

The same can be said for music...Totally...

Dont get me wrong originality still rules and indy/underground stuff kicks ass. But .... There has been some great remakes and prequals. My personal fav horror movie ever (sure to cause laughs and rasie eyebrows) is Texas Chainsaw II w/Hopper. Also with the production capabilities available now compared to years ago is not even comparable.

More technical and flashy production values do not necessarily a better film make, though - style over substance is rife at the moment.

TCM2 is a bit of a riot, including Dennis selecting the biggest, baddest chain saw, and Chop-top's alarming hammer attack on the guy in the radio station.
