According to the Daily Mail, Any kind of crime wave is due to some kind of media, film,tv,or video games. The latest to upset our moral guardians was a rather shit video game called manhunt. some guy killed his mate with a hammer so the tabloids blame it on this crap video game- which then goes on to sell really well despite it being a load of shite.
The joke is this guy had never even played the game-the guy who was murdered played it. The police told the media this but they decided to ignore it no doubt to make the story better.

Cannibal Holocaust. Although I saw most of the other movies you mentioned (DotD, Evil Dead, Excorcist) long before I saw CH, CH was the first movie that turned my stomach. Fuckin' brutal... [/B]
After seeing CH i'd be in the video store with my parents & id be asking them if i could watch last house' or driller killer shit like that, my mum was horrified she thought i was on drugs lmao.

Yeah, in America it's a different thing, because there was no "video nasty" controversy at the time, at least not over horror films per se. In the early 80's we were all upset over the potential harm that violent cartoons would do to us. And towards the mid-80's, the amount of violence featured in PG-rated films gave birth to the PG-13 rating.

Back when video stores were a fairly new thing, I seem to remember that most stores didn't give a flying handshake who was renting what, no matter the rating, etc. And as a result it was pretty easy for a teenager like myself to see "Zombie Flesheaters" or "Dawn of the Dead" or whatever.

When "Dawn of the Dead" was in its theatrical rerelease, however (it played at art houses in 1982), I remember noticing that some theatres were pretty strict about not letting kids in ("no one under 17 admitted"). I remember this well because I had trouble getting in to see the thing at first! And I wanted to see it pretty badly, because it had such a reputation.

Finally I found a theatre that would let me in, and the fun began. I walked in 20 minutes or so into the picture, and saw the helicopter zombie get the top of his noggin sliced off. I still remember the smell of the popcorn. Oh, those were the days! What a wonderful time that was. (Wax nostalgic here.)

-------------------------------------

As a side note, I love the British radio spots for "Zombie Flesheaters" (aka "Zombi 2" aka "Zombie").

"Zombie Flesheaters. ZOMBIE FLESHEATERS! ZOMBIE! FLESH! EATERS!"

If anyones interested theres a really good site about the video nasties & censorship in the uk in the 80s. It lists all the titles that were banned & other trivia. And im not pimping my own site i've got nothing to do with it.

Probably a grimy print of Nightmares in a Damaged Brain - from the opening "head-in-the-bed" thru the sleazy peep show scene to the "icepick-in-the-back" bit, this is a raw and dirty film and no mistake.

All UK releases (including the pre-VRA) are cut.

Never saw that one although i have heard of it. used to bunk off school & go around my mates house to watch nasties. Video shop used to let us have anything even porn, that is until he was prosecuted & shut down.
I don t think watching the nasties scarred me mentally......but PRETTY PEACHES thats a different story lmao
