Wasn't planning on watching a movie last night but at 10 o'clock The Edge came on HBO.I've seen this about 4 times already but i love the scenery in this.

PeaSoupintheye 03-21-2006 08:18 AM

I've watched a good few films of late.

Continuing on with the Guinea Pig Series:

Mermaid in a Manhole

LoL - well firstly, I had to check this out due to such an outrageous title. I have to say, so far this has had the best story and plot of the Guinea Pig Series to date. Not that that's saying much admittedly but the story was ok, the gore was typically splendid ( green, blue, purple, yellow, orange and black puss to use as paint for a painting) I mean that's special lol!! I won't tell much about the story apart from if you have a phobia of worms this movie is not for you!

6.5/10

He Never Dies

Another in the Guinea Pig Series this one is more of a comedy. It is about a guy who is bored with his life and work and so decided to kill himself - that's nothing new I hear you say - well, this guy tries everything. He slits his wrist, his blood runs dry and he doesn't die. He smashes an axe into his skull, the axe sticks and he continues to defy the odds and so you get the comedy. Not a bad effort and with a running time of just over 40 mins it's not all bad.

6/10

Armageddon

I continued my viewing with watching this for the first time and I have to say yes it's incredibly cheesy - yes it's one of them god bless America films in the ilk of Independence Day but we Brits sometimes, sometimes dig this. lol. Definetley a popcorn movie and I found it entertaining enough so...

7/10

Elephant

I put this on expecting a treat after the numerous great reviews it recieved. I have to say for the first 20 mins or so (the film runs for 75 mins) I was at a loss as to what was happening and got the impression it was being far too 'arty'. However, now having watched it I really appreciate the different approach this film had to the subject of mass murder / serial slayings. It took the perspective of the victims from the start using flashbacks and telling the story from every 'main' persons point of view. this was particularly effective as once they were killed you were left feeling for the characters. Having said all that, I think parts of the film could have been speeded up a little (did we really have to sit and listen to Eric Clebold play Beethoven in his bedroom on the piano ALL the way through)? I personally thought they were Mansonites so am sure Marilyn would have something to say after the finger of blame was pointed at him in the press - hey blame Beethoven!! How clockwork Orange!

This was a decent effort and I will be interested to see what the director has made of kurt Cobain's 'Last Days'.

6.5/10

Batteries Not Included

After such heavy subjects as mass murder I plumped for the old 80's classic - Batteries not Included and had a blast! I loved this film all of them years ago, god bless DVD for bringing it back! Thoroughly enjoyed this once more

The Ape

James Franco (Spider-man, Tristan & Isolde) directs, writes, produces, and stars in The Ape. The Ape is about Harry Walker (James Franco), a struggling author who can't get past the first two words of his book because of the interference of his wife and son. So, he moves out of his house and gets an apartment for some alone time. Well, that doesn't work out to well ash he discovers that there is a talking ape living in his apartment (who's name is ape). Other shit happens (literally), but I'm not going to take up your time with the summary. On to my review. I thought
The Ape could've been much better, especially since it made me laugh from time to time. But, it's problem that bugged me was that the music didn't fit into the story at all and threw me off and the camera was very shaky most of the time. This is sad, because I like James Franco. I think he's ambitious (like his character Harry Walker in the movie) and really had something going here. Not only was this is a comedy (a dark one at that), but it had a melodrama feel to it too. Especially around the ending (which I won't ruin for you since I'm not that kind of guy). I just wish that Franco would've done a little bit better on the camerawork and the music, because it really pushed the movie off of the ladder. Pretty much hitting the floor. Better luck next time Franco!

Chicken Little

I'd just like to point out that if this were a real story, Chicken Little would be cutting himself and committing suicide. Why? Well, everybody makes fun of him because he thought the sky was falling, his dad is disappointed in him, and the world is making fun of this incident with bumber stickers, books, and even a movie. These are the signs of a suicidal kid. But, all of this suicidal shit aside, Chicken Little wasn't much of a fun ride. It was more and less bumpy. The characters were stale and had no characteristics. And the pig (whatever his name is) reminded me of Max from A Goofy Movie. The plot wasn't good, since the world is falling incedent aftermath was played out for about an hour, only leaving us with about 15 minutes of the sky really falling. I hate to say, but the story wasn't believable one bit. I'm not referring to the invasion, I'm referring to the actions and insults everybody made towards Chicken Little. All in all, Chicken Little should just be passed by.

you gave it a higher rating than i did .. i thought it was unbearable.
unengaging characters .. it was like a parody of a likeable film.
it just shows how detached the filmmakers are from what kids are like these days - and what they think is cool.

The_Return 03-22-2006 12:30 PM

I have no intention of seeing it myself in the near future, however I do know some kids that really liked it.

my kid wasnt moved by it at all .. and he's a pretty good barometer - with the exception f his pokemon obsession he has pretty good taste in movies.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one. Everybody I talk to loved the movie.

@Return- Let the kids watch it by themselves. You'd be bored and pissed off while watching this movie.

House of the Dead 2

This is hands-down the most surprising movie so far this year! I would've never thought that a sequel to one of the shittiest movies ever made could be so much damn fun! I didn't catch it on Sc-Fi (because that channel sucks and cuts too much shit out), and I don't know if it had tits and gore, but the DVD release was packed with it. Tits galore and gore amore! Now, there are some flaws in this stellar sequel. First of all, the opening sucked major donkey-dong. It sucked Donkey Kong's dong. Supersoakers and an invasion of a slumber party was not the way to go. Especially since there were no titties to go with it (except for that wet t-shirt). Also, the opening credits were dumb as hell! I didn't like the clips they added with the opening credits. They just seemed too rushed. Sid Haig (Captain Spaulding from House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil's Rejects) has a cameo in this movie, but doesn't stay long. I honestly believe it was because he didn't want to be there. I mean, he didn't do to much of a good job with his small role (it wasn't bad, just wasn't good either). But, that's just my humble opinion. All of this aside, House of the Dead 2 was a pleasuring masturbation of a film! Don't let the House of the Dead title throw you off. This is nothing like the original. Hell, this was what the original should've been like!

The Giant Gilla Monster

From a critical point of view, this is by no means a good film. The actors are bad, the script is bad, the effects are laughable, and many points of the plot are more out of place than a zombie would have been. But I'll be a monkey's uncle if this wasn't a fun movie to watch! Though he might not be the greatest actor, Don Sullivan just oozes with that classic 50's charm that the whole movie has. Gotta love how lightly they took drunk driving back then! The ending was made pretty obvious within the first 10 minutes, but I'll admit they did a good enough job distracting me from it so it was unexpected in the end. Ah, and then the Gilla monster itself...didn't look convincing in the least of course, but the miniature sets did look quite realistic, surprisingly enough. Overall if you're looking for a good movie, look elsewhere. On the other hand, if you're looking for a fun, cheesy b-movie ride through the 50's, this is the perfect vehicle!

Posher778 03-22-2006 06:42 PM

Oh come on... It was probably the worst of the trilogy, and I just, really, really hated the ending to that. The 1st one was completely amazing, the second was gripping, but not as much of a story, mainly just 20 minute brawls and certain overly long highway scenes, but it was still very enjoyable, but I felt like they just wanted to get the trilogy over with by the third movie.

I don't think anything will compare to the last 30 or so minutes of the 1st matrix, when they go to save morpheus.

"guns.... lots and lots, or guns..."

Abominus 03-22-2006 07:07 PM

BOthe sequels sucked balls. They had a great story for a trilogy and ended up with a poorly executed (no matter how pretty and "intense" the effects were) mess. The ending of the three was garbage and not at all how they should have closed it.

The WRONG way = "YOU suck because you like that music/movie/whatever"

You are all intelligent enough to figure out the differences.

Soft For Digging

I bought this film as after watching the ghosts Of Edendale and being creeped out and surprised by the overall quality of the whole thing I have got into watching a few of the lesser known Indie films. Soft For Digging fell into this category. I think in the entire 75 minute film there are around 3-4 sentences of dialogue. This though is to bring you into the world of our main character, an old recluse and his experiencing the murder of a young girl and his fight to prove that what he saw was fact.

All in all - not a bad film but I wouldn't rush out to see it again

The Fatal Hour

Let me start by saying that I love these good ol' mystery flicks from the 40's. They're usually nice a short, filled with decent acting and predictable plotlines. While this did only run a mere 68 minutes, and the actors were as good as usual, I must say I was rather surprised at the outcome. Great twist in what I had pegged as a predictable film. The characters were all great, though I can't quite buy Karloff as a Chinaman. Grant Withers was great as the typical hard-boiled cop, though I must say this particular cop was more flustered than most, providing some fun comic relief. The trademark female reporter was pretty good here as well, played by the beautiful Marjorie Reynolds. If you're a fan of this kind of movie, I highly recomend it. Better than most!

The Indestructable Man

I've been on a kick for these cheesy old detective/horror flicks for the last coupe days, and this was a pretty good one. Aside from Price and Lugosi, Id have to say Lon Cheney Jr. has to be my personal favourite old time horror star. He isn't exactly in top form here, though he does do a fairly decent job considering he only gets to say about 3 lines. For a film made in the mid 60's, I was surprised at how violent it was...not that I'm complaining or anything, but the scene at the roadblock was very violent for the time. The narrator, yet another hard-boiled LA detective, was a pretty good character for most of the film, though he became a bit of a jerk in the final scene. The ending was somewhat predictable, but Cheney Jr. pulled it off very well. The film did drag in some places however, and I didn't particularly care for the love interest. Overall, it was a good enough way to kill an hour and 10 minutes.

Hey guys, been a while.... busy with a lot of stuff and getting a new computer and finally kicking the dial-up habit. :D Don't know why I didn't go with Comcast a long time ago. Comparing that to my old 32K modem computer is like a 2006 Z06 racing a half dead Yugo. :p

Recent movies I have watched.... "Dead Alive" and "I Spit On Your Grave" both the unrated versions. And I found em in the most unusual place. Circuit City of all places. I didn't even realize "Spit" was unrated until I opened the package. Man, talk about a really rough film.

V For Vendetta

I was quite surprised by this film actually. I was really expecting a mindless actioner, and it was anything but. It's certainly unexpected to see a film that casts a terrorist (because that's what V was, when you get right down to it) in a sympathetic light. Not a bad film at all. Overall: 7/10
