Ghost Ship (2002): 9/10

I had seen this before, but it had been a while. I really love this movie, despite it being panned by the critics. I thought the story/premise was interesting. Additionally, I think the acting is rather excellent. It is not especially scary, but the ghosts are at least creepy. On that note, the special effects are pretty good too. Anyway, even though this film receives a lot of hate, I actually really enjoy it.

I can't remember whether or not I liked this whole movie, but the opening scene might be one of the best of all time.

Frankenstein's Army (2013)

http://www.thehollywoodnews.com/wp-c...e-Featured.jpg

Unfortunately, Worse Case Scenario never go made and that project morphed into this film but it'sstill a solid low budget horror movie. This 'found footage' horror follows a squad of Soviet troop plus a cameraman (making a propaganda film) behind German lines. They stumble on an old factory where a descendant of the infamous Baron Frankenstein is continuing his experiments in animating the dead - this time for the glory of the 3d reich. This brings about the film main Raison d'ętre, to show case the weird, wonderful and sometime ridiculous Nazi Flesh Golems. It a fun film and does well to hide its low budget despite some of the monster chase scenes remind me of Scooby Doo :-)

This movie had some very creepy moment that worked really with really good tense before some very gross moment and some of death scenes were really gory and very well done.

The death in shower is was total unexpected really took me by surprised

This had from the very first second of the movie until decent ending of the movie.

Great acting from the whole cast

Low budget horror, done right. Some good scares and an interesting change of direction.

Wheew what a ride!

In this contemporary era of found-footage/zombie films galore, comes a film which serves a superb dose of nice, old-fashioned horror.

The makers have pulled out all the stops to make this as scary as possible, and it's a great thing. The film oozes atmosphere and foreboding unlike any film in recent times, and the best part is that the sense of creepy terror grabs you even in the day scenes.

I agree with Villain that it will feel like a mish-mash of several classic horrors of the 70s/80s (the film's events are set in 1971 so that's no surprise), but that's a factor which works for this film, and wonderfully well! There's some great background scores which help maintain the tenseness throughout, none more than the family theme which is composed by Mark Isham (fans of the man will instantly recognise his name at the beginning of the end credits). I loved the last 30 minutes, when it grabs the viewer by the scruff of the neck and pounds the horrors into his senses (unlike the Evil Dead remake which went from eye-roll to eye-roll in the final few).

I'll be first in line if they ever make a sequel to this one. Would love to know more about that very creepy doll - hope it gets a starring part in the sequel.

Highly recommended. Definitely getting the BD/DVD as soon as it releases.

P.S. - Don't watch it after midnight, specially if you live in a creaky, old house.

Thoroughly enjoyed it, Catherine Deneuve (sp?) was excellent. I agree with NE, you all need to see this film.

Yeah this is a good one. I only saw it recently. Like a few years ago. Very surprising.

Chernobyl Diaries -

I wasn't in a rush to watch this "movie." I only got the chance to see it at a friend's on Cinemax. Ingrid Bolsř Berdal was the only reason I added the movie to my watch list. She was in Cold Prey. Which was pretty good. But the premise of Chernobyl Diaries was predictable to me. Little did I know not only would the movie be predicable but it's not really a "movie" either. It comes off more like a student film or experiment by the director. An "I bet we can make a horror movie here on the cheap" type thing. It's not scary at all. Not in the look or feel. In fact the best horror moments were a scene with an animal and an abandoned fountain area. The only thing this film got right was the casting of the girls. They are all beautiful and fairly interesting. The final girl should get better parts in the future as she had a strong performance.

Additional - Even the premise of this movie is stupid. Only the final girl is smart in not wanting to go originally. If some one told you let's go to a fallout area no one in their right mind would want to go. And I get many people do dumb things when they are young. But survival sense usually kicks in. Yet I guess one day we will see a "let's go swimming near Fukushima movie" eventually. Just because people might just want to see it.

Shutter (2008)

I'm on the fence with this one. It was watchable, but not very good. It is an American remake of an Asian ghost story, and after watching it I felt like I needed to see the original. For some reason Asian horror just loses something in translation.

4/10

Watched Apartment 143 on Saturday. I enjoyed it, even though it really wasn't scary.

My Bloody Valentine 3-D- 7/10

This film is a pretty decent remake. The acting was surprisingly good for a film like this. In some ways, it feels more like a modern sequel than a remake. The films is far from brilliant and it could easily be argued that the original was better, but it is still a very entertaining film.

Note: I had seen this one before, but it had been a while.

Storm of the Century (1999): 10/10

I watched this film earlier today and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The story/premise was both interesting and unique. The acing was excellent and the character development equally excellent. Additionally, I found it was quite creepy. Furthermore, the atmosphere was perfect. It is pretty long (about four hours), but it never has a dull moment. Anyway, I really enjoyed it.

Note: I had never seen this one before.

Solid zombie/infected horror comedy in the same vein as Shaun of the Dead. Some good gore, and an interesting cast of all-female zombies. Worth watching.

"Stoker" 7/10

It was alright, but for a Chan-wook Park movie it was pretty harmless.

My favorite part, and probably the only thing i will remember from this movie, was
the piano scene. That was a great scene and the tune was awsome.

India: What do you want from me?
Charles: I want us to be friends.
India: We don't need to be friends. We're family.

:D

The Worlds End.
Funny. Well made bit of entertainment.
IMO preferable to Hot Fuzz, doesn't quite live up to Shaun (what does?).
Fans of the Wright/Pegg/Frost productions won't be disappointed.

The Bay

The Bay

Another "found footage" documentary style horror flick, but this one feels a bit more "real" than most, and actually seems plausible as you watch it. The creatures are deliciously disgusting, and the plot simple and tight. Recommend.

Opera (1987): 9/10

I watched this film for the first time today and I really enjoyed it. This film is likely to be one of my favorite Argento films (I have also seen Suspiria and Deep Red, which were really good too). There is a very artistic quality to it. Plus, it was great as a mystery (which is an aspect of giallo). Also, there were several quite suspenseful scenes. The acting was not brilliant, but it was not bad. The plot was very unique and interesting. On that note, I had my suspicions of who the killer was (and my initial impressions proved ultimately correct), but by the end of the film I was not so sure. Overall, an excellent film, definitely worth a watch.

The Devil's Rejects (2005): 10/10

I watched this for the first time today and I loved it. I do not know if I love it more or less than the original (I would say I love them equally in their own way). I loved that Michael Berryman (who played the most famous cannibal in The Hills Have Eyes) had a cameo and I also loved how the Marx Brothers were part of the plot. For some reason, I never put two and two together on the Marx Brothers and these films (by the way, I am a big Marx Brothers fan). As for the film, there were some tremendous performances and even more brilliant direction. I thought Zombie direction with this film was very unique. I also liked how this and House of 1000 Corpses both were able to have a very 70s feel. I had conflicted feelings with the characters in this film (especially at the end). I felt the sheriff went way too far and was nearly as bad as the main family, while simultaneously I wanted him to be successful because this family was extremely terrible. All of this amounts to an excellent film, in my opinion. Also, the music in the film was pretty good too (especially the end song). Anyway, an all-around excellent film, in my opinion.

Terrible but surprisingly gory manhunt film with DeNiro and Travola. Worth watching for John's face hair.

This is actually a remake the the British film(s), Scum. If you have not seen it you should check it out. (there are 2 versions by the same director - I prefer the 2nd).

StoneGhost 08-19-2013 02:58 AM

'The Pact' - meh. Though I liked the spinning cut-in-half-woman ghost photograph bit. It had some good suspense, but the cringe-worthy acting and the fact that they stabbed 'Lt. Rico' unceremoniously in the neck before he had a chance to do anything interesting put me off.

Evil Dead (2013) -

I decided to watch this even though I wanted to see the original first*. I figured I might watch something else with Jessica Lucas in it after that Cult TV show. I think this might be the first demon possession movie I've seen. At least the first one that's really dark and sinister. I only remember parts of The Exorcist. And even then what I do remember of that, the demon was always tied down and not doing / causing so much trouble. But I love the idea of books bringing out evil stuff. I've seen it a few times in movies. The Ninth Gate is probably my favorite one with the evil book.

I was surprised by the gore in this movie. Even though it is harsh on all the characters including the girls. It isn't the type like in ChromeSkull: Laid to Rest 2 which felt like a hatred of women type of butchering. This is the demon wanting to harm them and enjoying it. I've never seen this sort of thing before. At least that I can remember. But it is surprising and I think all from practical effects which makes it even more horrific. The movie looks great too. Very spooky.

A few things that were disappointing. I didn't watch all of the trailer but I always would hear a bit with the demon's song. I was waiting for that the whole movie and I can't believe it was cut. Also, I didn't get the ending monster and what was required for that to happen. It was also a bit of let down. I think I need to see the movie again to be sure if I want to own it one day. But I'll see the original first to compare.

*This is the first Evil Dead movie I've seen. After watching it I glanced at a review on IMDB. They didn't know what it was. They said it's not a reboot, remake, prequel, or sequel. As I went into it not knowing I just thought it was an update of the original. However, after watching a bit of the original trailer. I can see why some would have a problem with this movie since it's missing a character that I've seen in many Evil Dead posters. Also, the original seems to have an old school real feel that's present in many classic horror movies.

I actually found the most interesting character to be the little orphaned boy, aside from the tall man. There were even some spooky surprises here and there, so thumbs up for that. Really good, can't wait to watch Part 4.
